We left the UK in 2008, emigrating to Australia, working there for 7 years and gaining our Australian Citizenships. Life in Australia was excellent but after seven years we felt we needed a new adventure. We decided to quit our jobs, sell up, take a huge risk and go looking for somewhere special in France where we could live 'the good life'.
We spent several months looking for properties online whilst in Australia and then three weeks in Deux-Sevres before finding our beautiful home.
|Year property purchased||2015|
|Why this location?||With at least 2,600 hours of sunshine a year, the department of Deux Sevres is second only to the South of France as the sunniest area of France.
This warm and gentle micro-climate in a rural setting of fields and forests, lakes and rivers makes Deux Sevres an ideal holiday destination for those who enjoy all kinds of outside pursuits such as walking, cycling, fishing and horse riding, and offers amazing experiences no matter the season. We are ideally situated for anyone wanting to sample and enjoy the 'degustation de vin', the local wines from the nearby vineyards of Domain Des Trahan, Bouvet Ladubay and Saumur, travel along the wine trail or visit the fabulous chateaux including Saumur, Chinon, Azay-le-Rideau and many more. The market town of Thouars is located just 8 kms away and boasts the best Friday market in the department.
For those wanting a little more action there are many attractions nearby including Chateaux, Zoos, Go Karting, Puy De Fou, Futurescope and lots more.|
|Unique benefits of property||La Maison Lierre is located on the outskirts of the village providing views over rolling fields and woodland, nestled within a quiet hamlet, and only a 10 minute walk to the village of Massais. The village offers a shop, a café, a bar, a grocery store and post office all under one roof.
Recently refurbished to a high standard the self-contained Gite is separately situated within the grounds of the owner’s longère and can comfortably sleep 4-6 people.
La Maison Lierre has a wonderful garden area with outdoor furniture, and a barbecue for our guests to use. Set in 1 acre of land and adjacent to open countryside, the property is ideal for those who enjoy walking and cycling, or just relaxing with a good book.
Our free range chickens provide fresh eggs and we grow seasonal fruit and vegetables in our plot, both are available for visitors to purchase. This combined with food from the local shop or market means staying in is a real treat.
|

Puy du Fou is a historical theme park in Les Epesses in the heart of the Vendee region of Western France. The park brings in some 1.5 million visitors every year, making it the fourth most popular attraction in France after Disneyland Paris. It started in 1978 as an open-air amateur dramatics night where volunteers in the grounds of a ruined castle re-enacted the bloody history of the Vendee in western France. It has become one of the countrys biggest success stories. Its trademark is spectacular history extravaganza shows, where thousands of actors and animals recreate high drama, from Roman gladiators to King Arthur, with mind-blowing special effects.
The historic town is located between the Loire and Thouet rivers, and is surrounded by the vineyards of Saumur itself, Chinon, Bourgueil, Coteaux du Layon, etc. Which produce some of France's finest wines. Reported as the best market in the department, fresh produce, clothes, household items as well as indoor market specialising in fish, meats and cheeses. Thouars is one of those pretty French towns that few people have ever heard of... It has many beautiful old houses and streets, a wonderful chateau, a lovely river, Thouars is just off the tourist track - and that is part of its charm. Visitors do come into town during the summer months from more popular areas for the renowned Friday Market but otherwise the place is almost a tourist-free zone. However, it is a really good place to use as a base. Situated between the larger towns of Saumur and Poitiers, Thouars is a perfect setting-off point for visiting the Loire Valley, the Limousin, The Poitou Maritime region and the Vendee, the roads are comparatively quiet, parking is plentiful (and free) and you get a sense that you are seeing the real France. Very few people speak English but are very friendly and welcoming.
