Pros: Lovely spot, very well maintained and the pool was excellent. Tony and Marylyn work extremely hard and couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Coulon was great, lovely to have all those restaurants within walking distance and the cycling was fun.

Cons: due to the proximity of the main house, the owners were ever-present and we felt as though we were treading on eggshells throughout our stay. There were lots of rules, which we were reminded of regularly. The owners weren't that respectful of our privacy and walked into the house uninvited on one occasion. Also, the mattresses and pillows were so uncomfortable, hot and synthetic and we slept very badly all week. The sofa set-up downstairs is really uncomfortable as well. The lack of Wi-fi is frustrating in this day and age.

Owner response

We had to remind you to shut windows during a rainy night and to close the shutters and windows in your bedrooms for your own comfort, as on hot sunny days in a heatwave of 32 degrees, it is advisable to keep the stone gites facing south protected from high temperatures.
One of the current environmental rules imposed by our county to fight severe drought conditions is to avoid wasting water by not constantly jumping in and out of the pool and spreading water over the terraces. This was all well explained to you and you said you fully appreciated the need to co-operate.
In France, to avoid allergies and for hygiene purposes, the authorities stipulate the use of synthetic pillows and matresses and forbid the use of feathers.
Our gites are fully inspected, comply with all regulations and are registered to 3 star standard with the Prefecture.
Over 10 years no-one has complained about the lack of wi-fi in Le Pigeonnier, which is 10 metres from the router in the house. We did explain that in Coulon wi-fi and mobile phone connection can sometimes be sporadic. A lot of work is in progress to improve this situation with the installation of 5G in Coulon.
We consider ourselves extremely flexible and welcoming. We allowed you to arrive 2 hours earlier than our normal opening time to enable you to offload your food.
In this day and age for you to make such fickle comments is rather surprising in view of our care, generosity and kindness towards your family during your stay with us

Theproperty is a lovely limestone building on two floors. The grounds are lovely and very well kept with a nice size, very clean swimming pool, which has an alarm. There is table tennis and a badminton set available. There is a road next to the garden but it was not too noisy. The kitchen is well equipped and the lounge dining room is spacious with a large dining table. The sofa in the lounge was large but very uncomfortable - lumpy with a very low back. The TV channels are all French but there is a DVD player. The bedrooms are large; one is on a mezzanine. There is no air conditioning. There are two well appointed, very clean shower rooms on the first floor and a further toilet on ground level.

The French/British owners speak English and know the area well. They were very helpful indeed.

Coulon centre is a 3 minute walk. Its a small village but is on the canal, with 5-6 restaurants, cafes, a bakery, a very small Coop and a few small shops. You can hire canal punts from here. Its 75-90 minutes to Puy Du Fou Grand Parc (recommended!) and 45 minutes to a Rochelle/beaches.

We had a lovely stay and I would recommend this property to friends and family.

Owner response

Glad you enjoyed your stay David, Orla and Freddy. Thank you for your kind comments.

You certainly made the most of our beautiful local weather and swimming pool. We are glad you enjoyed exploring the region and spending two memorable days at the fabulous Puy du Fou Leisure ParK.
Sorry that our "L " shaped 15 foot long sofa made up of 6 modular units did not give you adequate comfort. Modern furniture these days does not always suit everyone.

I hope that you will come back to see us next year when you can test the more traditional and deeply upholstered sofa of our other adjacent gite.
Kind regards Anthony and Marylyn

We had a wonderful week’s holiday staying in the gite. The gite was immaculate, thoughtfully and practically furnished. The pool was a perfect temperature and super clean. The hosts, Tony and Marilyn, were both helpful and charming. The gite boasts access to a large garden and we loved the table tennis and badminton facilities which were also available for use. The area provided excellent cycling routes for young children. We hope to return next year for longer.

I can highly recommend this gite. We had a really lovely holiday here. The owners Marylyn and Tony were extremely friendly and helpful, recommending many places to visit. The surrounding area is very pretty and unspoilt with the vast network of waterways in the Marais Poitevin to explore by boat or bicycle. We would love to stay there again.
