Every September, Angouleme fills with racing enthusiasts for the Circuit des Ramparts, an annual gathering of classic and vintage cars. Modern safety equipment has replaced the hay bales and wooden fences but otherwise the circuit remains unchanged since the first Circuit des Ramparts race in 1939. Circuit des Ramparts 2017: 15, 16 and 17 September.
A beautiful city to visit at any time, with good shopping and restaurants too.
Only 30 minutes away - wander from islet to islet in this parkland setting and observe monkeys roaming free in this beautiful cage free habitat.
A real mix of old and new. The centre, which has been remodelled in recent years, has big open grassed areas where people sit eating their lunch. There are lots of pavement cafés and a diverse range of eateries and lots of shops. The market is held daily but the best day is Saturday when it is very busy. All of this is off set by the huge Donjon and ancient churches as well as Gothic public buildings and softly coloured stone houses along the river. Throughout the summer there is a range of activities which take place in the park and on the river.
A beautiful area of canals, meadows and traditional towns and villages. Why not hire a punt with a driver and cruise the waterways.
On 10 June 1944, the village of Oradour-sur-Glane in the Haute-Vienne, then Nazi occupied France, was destroyed. 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a Nazi Waffen-SS company. A new village was built nearby after the war, but French President Charles de Gaulle ordered the original to be maintained as a permanent memorial and museum. A truly moving experience and well-worth the 1.5 hours drive from Gites dans les Champs
