The property is situated in the small town of Oiron which is in the Deux Sevres, in the Poiteau Charente region. We are very near the Loire valley with the town of Saumur just over 30 minutes away by car. The Gite is within a private courtyard and there is parking beside the property. Our property is within a village of around 1000 people and larger towns are within 15 minutes drive, for supermarkets etc. The property was fully renovated in 2017 to a high standard which we would look for ourselves, when on holiday. We have invited a number of friends and family to stay there and with their help we have upgraded the property accordingly. Every visitor to date has complimented us on the property although we are already planning improvements for next year based on feedback given by satisfied clients.
Oiron has a number of shops including a bakery, butcher, general store and pharmacy and there is also a GP surgery in the town. There is a hotel which offers a bistro menu and meals in the evening.
There is a fully equipped kitchen with a breakfast bar and also a separate dining area. Equipment includes a fridge-freezer, cooker, and dishwasher. The kitchen has a view over the fields and gives access to an outdoor eating area.
The living area looks out over the fields and has a settee and chairs in which to relax with your wine before dinner, or with a good book.
There are 2 bedrooms, one of which has a double bed and the other has 2 twin beds. Both have their own en suite bathroom with shower cubicle.
The bathrooms are both within the bedrooms and include towel rails and shower cubicles.
The heating is electric.
Television with British and French channels available.
The property at the rear has a large field which looks out over the countryside and also towards the chateau in the village which houses a contemporary art collection and is now owned by the State so is open permanently and very well maintained.
Parking is right outside the gite, within the courtyard, making it easy to load and unload. The courtyard is private and the gates are normally closed overnight, but not locked.
The gite is ideal for 2 or 4 people and the bedrooms are on the first floor so is not for those who have problems with stairs. The ground floor has the sitting, cooking and eating area. So small families with 2 children for example could also enjoy this property.
We are both from Scotland originally although Frances spent most of her career in Paris where she worked in the OECD, an international organisation.. Ronnie worked in various industries including construction, and finally in finance before retiring to France. We have renovated this property which is our permanent residence and we renovated the old stables to form a luxury gite for guests to enjoy.
|Year property purchased||2013|
|Why this location?||We had retired and decided to buy a property in the Loire Valley as this offered an excellent climate and lifestyle with good access by road and rail within France to other areas which we visit regularly. There are airports nearby giving further options for travel to the UK or internationally.|
|Unique benefits of property||The property is ideal for those wishing to visit the Loire Valley and explore the chateaux or tour the wineries in the region, of which there are 2 in the village. The village has a number of shops so fresh bread is available each morning as well as other foods from the village store. Wine tours can be arranged and as we live on-site we are on hand to help you plan your visit to enhance your experience if required.|
Many of the villages and towns in the area have regular markets and the stall holders vary from the highly professional to the very rustic farmer bringing produce straight from the fields, and are well worth visiting. The largest market is in Thouars on Tuesdays and Fridays and this is about 10 kms away. There are numerous other markets held on different days and we can provide updated details and specific features of these.
You can enjoy the new Swimming pool facility in Thouars, about 15 kms away, which has several pools, slides for the children, and a Sauna and Hammam. Alternatively you can go to Moncontour about 11 kms away, which is an outdoor watersports centre for all ages.
This is an ideal area for keen cyclists or those just wishing to have an easier ride. The local garage hires battery aided bikes through the local tourist board although the area is quite flat. Roads around are well maintained and safe and I can help with recommendations as I ride up to 30 miles around 3 times each week. The local tourist offices provide a number of maps for routes in the area which highlight grade of difficulty and places of interest en route.
There are 14 communes which produce wine in the surounding area, including two within the village. You can travel further afield to enjoy the wines of Saumur, Chinon and the Loire Valley and I can help with recommendations depending on the area you plan to visit. Wines from the Loire valley are well known throughout the world and you can buy excellent wines to take home at unbeatable prices as you are buying directly from the producer. Some of these producers are in old chateaux and your visit covers history of the area with an unforgettable wine tasting experience speaking directly with the producers of the wines. Most of these visits have no charge and can be organised at short notice so your plans can be flexible. If your preference is for a red wine then we would recommend the wineries around Chinon. if you want to sample the full range of Loire Valley wines then thw winereis around Saumur are more suited as you can enjoy reds, whites and the local speciality called Cremant de Loire. Known locally as bubbles or boules in French, the sparkling wines are produced in the same way as champagne and offer excellent value. We actually prefer Cremant to champagne and this is based simply on the excellent quality of the wine.
Golf is available within a short drive and there are many more courses within an hour, depending on your plans. You can normally turn up and play within any day or book at short notice. Some of these courses have a compact course where you can play a warm up in the morning, enjoy lunch in the restaurant there and then enjoy 18 holes afterwards. Costs vary but forward planning can help reduce the costs through use of vouchers obtainable vie the internet.
The nearest courses are situated near the historic town of Fontevraud, burial place of Richard the Lionheart within the beautiful abbey there, and Bressuire.
There is a Centre Parcs within a 20 minute drive and daily tickets for families are available at discounted prices when bought through the local tourist office. The Parc near here was built 2 years ago and is a very nice facility which can be enjoyed by all ages.
This fantastic entertainment is just over an hour away and you can spend a day, or a day and evening, there. Research this via the internet to get a better view of exactly what is on offer at any time.
This located near Poitiers which is just under an hour from here and attracts people of all ages although not ideal for the very young children, according to friends who have visited this wonderful site.
The area is full of interesting Chateau including a beautiful chateau in Oiron. Fontevraud, the burial place of Richard the Lionheart is about 40 minutes away.
We have a number of excellent restaurants in the area including a number of Michelin starred establishments. We can help with recommendations to suit your budget.
For those who like to relax by the river whilst they dine there is Le Trompe Souris at Luzay which is about 15 minutes by car. This is also a great place to take infants who can play along the riverside as you dine. The river is quite shallow but has plenty to interest the kids with rock pools and small fish swimming there.
For those looking for a very special experience in terms of ambience and gastronomic delights there is the Relais du Pompois at St Verge which is about 20 minutes away by car.
Whatever your taste in music, we are sure this will be catered for in the area as summertime sees many festivals which include most genres of music. Classical and Blues are probably most popular but jazz, folk and pop are also found.
The Chateau of Oiron is known as the centre of contemporary arts in France and has a very intersting history making it a must visit for all who come to the area.
There are a number of shops within the village and they include a butcher, baker, general store and a pharmacy. There is also a garage and a restaurant which offers meals during the day and in the evenings. The large supermarkets can be found in towns nearby which also have markets on different days where local produce can be bought.
We enjoy a special climate in this area which is why the Loire valley is the third largest wine producing area in France. So whilst sunshine can never be guaranteed, historical records show that the chances of having good weather during your stay here are better than in most other regions of France including those further south.
