Moulin de la Ronde with its toes in the Vienne, is a protected area of outstanding natural beauty. Friends, visitors and locals describe it as "sublime". This historic property consists of the owner's cottage, the old watermill, two barns and lots of places to simply sit and relax.
The "Old Grainstore" is the upper part of a barn which used to be linked by a footbridge to the mill. Now it is a very spacious, open plan apartment, with parquet flooring, imposing original beams and high quality furniture reflecting the owners' time in Asia.
The local village of Bonnes is ten minutes stroll away with a swimming pool, pharmacy, boulangerie, bar/restaurant and a Chateau! The lovely market town of Chauvigny is just 5km away.
The kitchen bar consists of a large ceramic tiled work area, butchers block, large fridge-freezer, small electric cooker and cooker hood, microwave, toaster, coffee-machine, kettle and an extensive range of kitchen utensils, including iron and ironing board.
Dine in style beneath the original beams on a substantial glass topped wrought iron table with padded seats and carvers for 6 people. There is plenty of subdued lighting for interior eating or if you prefer eat outside on the shared courtyard, by the river or on the island. Gas and charcoal bbq's are never very far away.
The Old Grainstore is a very large open plan space with an abundance of seating; a 6 seater sofa, trundle bed and leather armchair recliner. The wood burning stove, flat screen tv with basic Sky package and river views provide focal points. We have a very good quality hi-if system with eclectic record and cd and dvd collection. Parquet flooring and Chinese rugs add to the atmosphere.
Behind the Chinese screen is very possibly the largest king size bed in the whole of the Vienne! It has proved to be a favourite with guests! There is a lovely freestanding wardrobe, chest of drawers and Chinese step cupboard for plenty of storage so you can hide the suitcase away and settle in.
In the bathroom you with find an excellent shower with lots of jets to play with and a seat upon which to rest! A single sink with wc, shaver point, heated towel rail, hairdryer and a lovely view of the river add to the luxury.
The Old Grainstore is equipped with a wood burning stove and 4 electrically heated radiators which are more than capable of providing a cosy atmosphere even in mid winter.
We have wi-fi, music systems, Sky tv, a selection of books, cds, dvds and games to keep you entertained.
Outside we can offer on-site fishing canoeing and swimming in the river or millpond. There are plenty of varied and comfortable places to sit and relax. We also have cycles available for the quiet local roads.
Some of our visitors spend most of their time on-site enjoying all the facilities as described. The weather in spring, summer and autumn is generally warm and sunny so it's perfect for being outdoors. We have four acres of land and you are invited to enjoy it all.
We are a large property so parking is not a problem!
There are a few steps up to the courtyard and then a dozen more to the Old Grainstore which will make it difficult for people with serious disabilities. Because we are beside the river parents need to be attentive to their children's whereabouts.
The property owners live on-site and will normally be available to help should you need any assistance with any aspect of your holiday.
My wife Gill and I are retired now. This is our home and we spend most of our time here but with a married son in the States and a married daughter and two grand children in London, we travel quite a lot. We welcome holiday makers and enjoy sharing this beautiful place.

|Why this location?||Not many places offer an island in a river of outstanding natural beauty. The region is rich in Roman and Plantagenet history and there are some charming villages and good restaurants to enjoy. It's well connected transport wise...Poitiers airport and the TGV, not to mention the quiet roads. Caen is just three and a half hours north.|
|Unique benefits of property||Calm, peaceful, natural, tucked away yet not remote, La Ronde is truly an exceptional location in a country of considerable beauty.|
walking, birdwatching, fishing, cycling, local markets, Futuroscope, Romanesque architecture, historic monuments, the lovely city of Poitiers, the Brenne national park, live music, ville/village fleurie.
Ouistreham. An excellent autoroute connects directly to Ouistreham. It's no more than a three and a half hour drive.
Cafe des Sports is just 2km away. It specialises in lunchtime meals with a 5 course feast with wine included for 11 Euros. Sunday lunch costs 15 Euros. It is extremely popular with locals and you need to go feeling hungry!
Really enjoyed our stay here, the owners are a great couple and we enjoyed the time we spent chatting with them as much as the location. Highly recommended.
The gite was clean and comfortable and had everything that you would need. The location was ideal, with a lovely view of the river. The owner was very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this gite. We enjoyed cycling around the area and especially enjoyed visiting the La Vallee des Singes, Angles-sur-l’Anglin, Montmorillion and Saint-Savin.
Many thanks for your helpful review. We love it when guests get what they were hoping for!
Wonderful two weeks stay at the Grainstore.
A great place to stay and rest but with so many other things as well. Great location, local shops, friendly hosts and locals, history, good food & wine, swimming, canoeing, bikes, fishing and great wildlife to watch all day and hear at night.
Tip for holiday fishermen, take some thicker line. There are some big ones in the pond.
Vive la France!
Delighted you both had such a lovely time. We enjoyed having you around! Thanks for taking the time to write a review and do pop in for a cuppa should you be in our neck of the woods.
We were a returning stayer to the Old Grainstore, its beautifully decorated with hints of Asia from the owners former lives. Two minutes from your door is the River Vienne, great for wildlife, fishing or to use the canoes provided. It is a haven for relaxation and rejuvination but with easy access to Chauvigny which has multiple restaurants and the usual weekly market. A Lidls and a large LeClerc are also within 10 minutes which also has reasonably priced fuel available on selfservice only pumps. The hosts Brian and Gill live on site but are unintrusive although always happy to offer advice and net the odd troublesome barbel. My gratitude goes to Gill for her excellent blinis with which we all celebrated my 50th birthday, I couldnt think of anywhere else I would rather have spent it.
I would recommend this to anyone seeking tranquility but with "civilisation" close at hand and the Cafe De Sport in Bonnes is recommended to anyone for its Sunday lunch, French home cooking at its best but I suggest walking not driving....
Thanks Paul and Sarah. It was a delight to have you back and celebrate your 50 th birthday. We'll look you up in Andover for sure and look forward to that drink. Your review is much appreciated. Hope it helps those interested in staying here. One set of returning guests to go...and then a break. But the grass is growing now the rain has come and I think I shall be busy...
