About this property

Private Island, River Frontage, Peace, Tranquility . This cottage/gite is in a village setting.

Moulin de la Ronde with its toes in the Vienne, is a protected area of outstanding natural beauty. Friends, visitors and locals describe it as "sublime". This historic property consists of the owner's cottage, the old watermill, two barns and lots of places to simply sit and relax.
The "Old Grainstore" is the upper part of a barn which used to be linked by a footbridge to the mill. Now it is a very spacious, open plan apartment, with parquet flooring, imposing original beams and high quality furniture reflecting the owners'  time in Asia.
The local village of Bonnes is ten minutes stroll away with a swimming pool, pharmacy, boulangerie, bar/restaurant and a Chateau! The lovely market town of Chauvigny is just 5km away.

Kitchen and dining

The kitchen bar consists of a large ceramic tiled work area, butchers block, large fridge-freezer, small electric cooker and cooker hood, microwave, toaster, coffee-machine, kettle and an extensive range of kitchen utensils, including iron and ironing board.

Dine in style beneath the original beams on a substantial glass topped wrought iron table with padded seats and carvers for 6 people. There is plenty of subdued lighting for interior eating or if you prefer eat outside on the shared courtyard, by the river or on the island. Gas and charcoal bbq's are never very far away.

Living rooms

The Old Grainstore is a very large open plan space with an abundance of seating; a 6 seater sofa, trundle bed and leather armchair recliner. The wood burning stove, flat screen tv with basic Sky package and river views provide focal points. We have a very good quality hi-if system with eclectic record and cd and dvd collection. Parquet flooring and Chinese rugs add to the atmosphere.

Bedrooms

Behind the Chinese screen is very possibly the largest king size bed in the whole of the Vienne! It has proved to be a favourite with guests! There is a lovely freestanding wardrobe, chest of drawers and Chinese step cupboard for plenty of storage so you can hide the suitcase away and settle in.

Bathrooms

In the bathroom you with find an excellent shower with lots of jets to play with and a seat upon which to rest! A single sink with wc, shaver point, heated towel rail, hairdryer and a lovely view of the river add to the luxury.

Heating

The Old Grainstore is equipped with a wood burning stove and 4 electrically heated radiators which are more than capable of providing a cosy atmosphere even in mid winter.

Entertainment

We have wi-fi, music systems, Sky tv, a selection of books, cds, dvds and games to keep you entertained.
Outside we can offer on-site fishing canoeing and swimming in the river or millpond. There are plenty of varied and comfortable places to sit and relax. We also have cycles available for the quiet local roads.

Garden and outside

Some of our visitors spend most of their time on-site enjoying all the facilities as described. The weather in spring, summer and autumn is generally warm and sunny so it's perfect for being outdoors. We have four acres of land and you are invited to enjoy it all.

Parking and garages

We are a large property so parking is not a problem!

Visitor suitability

There are a few steps up to the courtyard and then a dozen more to the Old Grainstore which will make it difficult for people with serious disabilities. Because we are beside the river parents need to be attentive to their children's whereabouts.

Information about any additional facilities

The property owners live on-site and will normally be available to help should you need any assistance with any aspect of your holiday.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Brian and Gill Driver

My wife Gill and I are retired now. This is our home and we spend most of our time here but with a married son in the States and a married daughter and two grand children in London, we travel quite a lot. We welcome holiday makers and enjoy sharing this beautiful place.

Wonderful two weeks stay at the Grainstore.
A great place to stay and rest but with so many other things as well. Great location, local shops, friendly hosts and locals, history, good food & wine, swimming, canoeing, bikes, fishing and great wildlife to watch all day and hear at night.
Tip for holiday fishermen, take some thicker line. There are some big ones in the pond.
Vive la France!

Owner response

Delighted you both had such a lovely time. We enjoyed having you around! Thanks for taking the time to write a review and do pop in for a cuppa should you be in our neck of the woods.

We were a returning stayer to the Old Grainstore, its beautifully decorated with hints of Asia from the owners former lives. Two minutes from your door is the River Vienne, great for wildlife, fishing or to use the canoes provided. It is a haven for relaxation and rejuvination but with easy access to Chauvigny which has multiple restaurants and the usual weekly market. A Lidls and a large LeClerc are also within 10 minutes which also has reasonably priced fuel available on selfservice only pumps. The hosts Brian and Gill live on site but are unintrusive although always happy to offer advice and net the odd troublesome barbel. My gratitude goes to Gill for her excellent blinis with which we all celebrated my 50th birthday, I couldnt think of anywhere else I would rather have spent it.
I would recommend this to anyone seeking tranquility but with "civilisation" close at hand and the Cafe De Sport in Bonnes is recommended to anyone for its Sunday lunch, French home cooking at its best but I suggest walking not driving....

Owner response

Thanks Paul and Sarah. It was a delight to have you back and celebrate your 50 th birthday. We'll look you up in Andover for sure and look forward to that drink. Your review is much appreciated. Hope it helps those interested in staying here. One set of returning guests to go...and then a break. But the grass is growing now the rain has come and I think I shall be busy...

We spent a glorious two weeks here. Brian and Gill were everything you would want from hosts, courteous, kind , and very friendly. The location is a little piece of heaven. The gite is superb. We loved the decor. The fishing is superb. Barbel, catfish, eel. The gardens are beautifully maintained. It is well located , lots to see around the area. Do as much as you want or just watch the river rolling by. Would we go back?....... OH YES!!!! Thank you Brian and Gill for sharing your little french paradise with us.

Owner response

Delighted it worked out well Richard. Pleasure to have you here. We have to say you left the gite in superb condition. Thanks for that and we hope to catch up with you both in due course!

Can't fault it.. A warm welcome, a great location, everything we wanted on our doorstep. The old Grainstore was perfect for our family of four. The owners had thought of everything we might need at the property. Wherever there was a view there was a seat. The river was as much fun for the children as any swimming pool, with free use of a kayak. local supermarket was just 5 minutes away and loads of attraction all very close. We had a different day out planned every day all within a 35 minute drive. We would love to visit again and would highly recommend to anyone wether looking for a quiet retreat or an active family holiday.

Owner response

Lovely to receive this review Nicola and family. We're delighted you had such a lovely time and that we offered what you wanted. Do call in and say hi when you're visiting Montmorillon again. Hope to bump into your mum:)
