About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Nicholas Howitt

We moved here permanently in 2006 and have since converted and renovated the original farmhouse and most of the outbuildings. We love living here and sharing our home and knowledge about the area with our guests. We particularly enjoy watching the flights of cranes as they pass over us in Spring and Autumn- sometimes they even rest in the nearby fields.

Year property purchased 1998
Why this location? 86260, SW France. We are about 2 hrs from the coast. It's really the heart of rural France.
Unique benefits of property Peace and quite. Home from home. Private pool (open mid May to September). Little owls, buzzards, black red starts, hen harriers, hoopoes, cranes ....

The Owner Recommends

Angles sur l'Anglin

The pretty village of Angles sur l’Anglin is just 2km from La Métairie d’Auge. The village dates back to medieval times and has its own ruined château perched high on a cliff overlooking the river Anglin. Centre for cottage industry of "jours d'Angles" lace. Roc au Sorcieres- pre-historic caves.

Canoe and Kayak

Canoeing on the local rivers is great fun. Choose from hiring by the hour on the river Gartempe at La Bussiere (10km) or half/ full day hire on the rivers Gartempe or Anglin.

Chauvigny has a busy and lively weekly market. The velo-rail offers an exciting way to experience the countryside and is great fun for all the family. Les Geants du Ciel is a spectacular collection of birds of prey, housed in the château, where flying displays are held daily. There are lots of good restaurants in the medieval town (La Belle Epoque) and in the lower town.

A theme park dedicated to moving images. The fantastic futuristic buildings each house a different attraction. The park also has gardens and playgrounds. Each evening in the summer (and at weekends in the winter) there is a magnificent firework and laser display

Gite was extremely comfortable with excellent facilities, friendly and helpful host.

Owner response

Thank you for your review. It was lovey to meet you both. We are really glad you enjoyed your stay here at La Metairie d’auge. Thank you again for leaving the gîte “spotlessly clean” Nich and Julie

We have recently returned from a fantastic holiday at this property. The house was perfect, in a beautiful setting and well equipped. We asked for the baby equipment package and had two cots and stair gates provided. Although the owners lived on site, we did not feel overlooked in any way. Our private garden had a small slide provided. The shared garden with swings and playhouse were great for keeping little ones entertained, as were the animals! The local area was beautiful. We enjoyed walking across the fields from the gite to the local village and visited a beautiful lake beach. We would love to return one day!

Owner response

Thanks Gemma, it’s nice to hear that you all enjoyed your stay. You are welcome back anytime. Nich & Julie

We have just returned from a very relaxing fortnight in this lovely rural gite. It is comfortable, safe for our toddler (stairgates were available) and had all the necessary equipment.
Nich and Julie are perfect hosts, always available to help but never intruding into our space. We had our own private garden as well as use of the family garden with swings, a little playhouse and toys. Adjacent to this was the hen and duck house, a source of much entertainment for our toddler. The pool is secure, clean and always available. The attached barn is home to swallows and owls! More entertainment for enquiring eyes!
There is also a gravelled courtyard with garden furniture and sunshades. For our stay the temperature was often in the thirties!
The village nearby provided a small store, but a bit run down, I thought. The nearby bakery sold delicious bread but a basic range.
We visited all of the nearby towns and can recommend Anglin sur Angles for the scenery. Le Blanc is a nice town. The markets were worth a visit too.
With a small child we did not make use of any restaurants so I can't comment on them.
We visited the nearby National Parc at Le Brenne. and Chatellerault.
I can thoroughly recommend this gite and the thoughtful and friendly owners.

Owner response

It’s so nice to know you enjoyed your stay. With a new shop opening and the new restaurant/bar getting established in Vicq, we’re hoping the village centre is on the up too.
See you again soon we hope.

The gite was perfect for a family of 4. It also had wifi which was great for our 2 teenagers, Lovely surroundings in the countryside with a 25 min walk to the nearest village which had a few bars and restaurants, and of course somewhere to buy bread.
The gite was comfortable and the friendly and helpful owner Nich and Jools had thought of everything you could need or want. All mod cons in the kitchen. Lots of hot water for showering and baths.
We did a few excursions to the lake, hired canoes and drove into Poitiers. All really worthwhile.
Pool area was kept well with 4 sun beds and the pool cleaned daily. We gave it a lot of use which was really good fun. Very safe pool area as through a locked gate which small children could not enter without an adult. Also plenty of garden space for ball games.
All in all a fabulous little gite which gave us a relaxing and enjoyable break. We rarely go to the same place twice as there are so many places to see and stay but would consider going back. Definitely would recommend . The owners also hire out bikes which we were going to do but didn't as we had very very hot weather for most of the week. Too hot for cycling!
