About this property

16th Century Rural Country Cottage. This cottage/gite is in a village setting.

La Jaudonnière is a small hamlet between the villages of Chatain and Benest situated on the border of the Charente and Vienne departments. The area enjoys the second highest number of daily sunshine hours after the south of france and has long hot summers with mild springs and autumns. The cottage is centrally heating with a large open fireplace for snug winter visits. La Jaudonniere is a 16c character country cottage with private in-ground swimming pool and 4 acres of grounds, facing south over open countryside. The cottage has stone walls and oak beams throughout, terracotta tiles plus some original stone and oak floors.

The cottage can be found at the end of a 100m country lane, in a quiet, safe and secure location with no through traffic. The surrounding area is great for walking and cycling with the River Charente close by where you can hire canoes.
The pool is 8m x 4m, south facing and benefits having the sun from early morning to the evening.  It has large decking areas for sunbathing and dining.




Kitchen and dining

British standard kitchen with cooker plus hob, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge-freezer, microwave. Kitchen table and chairs for ad hoc dining. Next to the kitchen is a large dining room with oak beamed ceiling, a refectory dining table seating 6, antique dresser and original oak floor. French 17c antique sofa, Electric piano/organ. Cd Player. Staircase to upstairs bedrooms and bathroom.

For al fresco dining, there is a large teak dining table, seating 6 on the pool deck with umbrella for shade and further dining tables in other areas of the garden giving dining options for sunny and shady areas.

Living rooms

Living room with terracotta tiled floor, large sofa with matching armchair, large inglenook working fireplace, oak beamed ceiling and a small conservatory leading to the garden. There is a television with French and English channels and a record/cd/tape/radio cabinet.


Upstairs there is one large well-furnished bedroom with Queen size bed and door to a stone staircase leading down to the garden. The second bedroom has 3 comfortable single beds. The upstairs bathroom is a good size and has a large deep bath with a shower in the bath. The landing is fitted with wardrobes leading to the bathroom and the 2nd bedroom at the end of the corridor has three single beds, cot is in the wardrobe with a highchair.


Good size bathroom with bath, shower, toilet and sink. The bath is deep for a good soak after a day by the pool with a shower fitting.


There is central heating throughout, with a new combi boiler installed in 2014 and all the rooms have radiators. There is a large inglenook fire place in the sitting room for winter visits and you can even roast chestnuts!


French and English tv, dvd player, Electric piano/organ, Record player, cd player, radio, tape player. Books and games for in and outdoors.

Garden and outside

The property boasts beautiful south-facing gardens looking out to open countryside with sunshine from morning to dusk. With the long hot sunny days and south-facing garden, the private pool is a real asset and very enjoyable. The pool area itself, has ample decking for sunbathing and outside dining , and is also very secluded and peaceful. There are four luxury loungers with long cushions and four swinging loungers.
There is a large south facing garden, with paddock in over 4 acres and open country views. Lovely private swimming pool with decking on 2 sides for sunbathing, a large teak dining table and chairs on 1 deck with other tables in the garden which can be moved to shady areas if required.
At the poolside there is a new brick barbecue, whilst another can be found in more a shaded area of the garden, for dining under the enormous walnut tree.

The area enjoys the second highest number of daily sunshine hours after the south of France and has long hot summers with mild springs and autumns. It is located in rural bliss with numerous walking paths and tracks surrounding the property. There are bikes available at the property.

Within less than an hours drive there are many swimming lakes, adventure parks, water parks, beautiful French towns, horse riding centres and much more. There is an information folder in the cottage on all local attractions.

Within a few hour's drive are La Rochelle and Il De Re if you fancy a trip to the beautiful beaches on the French coast, the famous Cognac vineyards and the Futuroscope theme park.

The Charente river runs very close to the property with fishing and canoeing available.

We reallly enjoyed our holiday in such a lovely setting and spottied lots of interesting wildlife including barn owls. The pool and large garden were great for the whole family and we regularly enjoyed barbecuing and eating outside. The old gite has character and it suited our needs during our stay. But we felt that it could be better maintained as there were a few DIY jobs needed in the bathroom.There was no bracket for the shower head, so we had to shower sitting down. The property was good value for money but feel a lot more could be made of it with a bit better upkeep and more attention to detail, including updating the double bed.
The owner David was very helpful providing us details with what to expect at the property and the surrounding area, including a recommended route. As we expected, the area is very quiet and a reasonable drive to the nearest supermarkets and restaurants (Super U and Lidl are 20 mins away in Civray).

Dear Neil, Thank you for taking time to post your review and comments appreciated. The bathroom has a low ceiling over the bath due to the position of the beams .The property is 16c and we are unable to make a structural change to give more head room. We decided to take the shower bracket off to make a hand held shower because in the past water from the shower was ending up on the bathroom floor then pouring through to the room below. We had to replace the bathroom floor because although there is a warning in the bathroom to make sure the shower curtain was positioned fully to stop this happening , on occasions this was not the case resulting in damage and substantial cost to ourselves to replace the wooden floor. The advertisement does mention that there are low beams in the bathroom. Our rental rate is below other properties in the area that have less appeal and thank you for agreeing the property is great value for money.

The gite is in a lovely setting – very quiet and great for wildlife. The swimming pool was lovely. The house is nice and cool (it was very hot when we were there).

Unfortunately there were a few problems which spoilt our stay a little bit. The gite appears tired and ‘unloved’ with many cobwebs and dust, and we felt it needed to be looked after a bit more. Although the bedding and linen was clean it was old and the towels had holes in, and some of the under bedding was stained. When we arrived it appeared the cleaner had stopped midway through cleaning the house as there was a dustpan and brush full of dust on the middle of the bedroom floor.

The bath is unusable if you are over 5ft 5 or a little overweight and it is almost impossible to use the shower as it is so small and narrow. We think the bathroom needs to be updated urgently.

The leaflets in the gite were very out of date, some of the brochures going back to the late 1990’s, and they could do with more information on restaurants etc in the area – one card was 5 years out of date and the restaurant had closed. There was no visitor’s book.

Having said all this, we did enjoy our stay, but we felt a lot more could be done to make the place really nice. We are very experienced in staying in gites and sadly this one was not high on our list.

Thank you for your comments. I am surprised you only score 5 for cleanliness. Our caretakers are an English couple who have cleaned for us for the past few years without any adverse comments from previous guests. The property is 16c with the original heavy oak beams throughout and therefore a cobweb can appear overnight. As this is a self catering property we leave cleaning materials including an extendable brush that can be used to sweep the beams when guests are in the property as they are responsible for the day to day cleaning. Towels and sheets from John lewis were replaced in May 2015 however some of these were "borrowed" by guests and not returned and we have had to replace since the writers were there. The bath is not unusable as is a nice deep bath however the beams slope down over so that the detachable shower is difficult if you are tall or on the heavy side. We are a family of four all over 5.5ft and have managed to use the bath and shower for the past twenty years. We leave all information regarding the area however old as ancient buildings and points of interest do not date however restaurants do change hands or close down but we are not looking to produce a restaurant guide. This lovely property, gardens and pool is very good value as our repeat guests tell us.
