L'Escapade is a wonderful gite that was a former bakery for the village and still houses the original oven in the lounge. The whole gite was given a total refurbishment in 2016 and therefore is still looking very new.
The kitchen is well equipped with oven, hob, dishwasher, fridge and microwave. There are plenty of utensils to assist guests that want to cook meals etc.
There is a table and chairs to seat 4 within the lounge area.
The living room has 2 sofas and a coffee -table, plus a television that can receive UK channels (BBC, ITV etc). This room has feature stone walls and the original bread oven.
There are 2 tastefully decorated bedrooms. The first bedroom has a double bed with 2 bedside cabinets and a drawer unit.
The second bedroom has twin beds with a wardrobe and bedside cabinet.
The tiled bathroom has a large shower enclosure, with wash hand basin and toilet.
There is a wood burning stove in the lounge but it is highly unlikely to be required.
The gite has its own private shaded patio area with table and chairs. A barbecue can also be provided should guests not wish to use the one in the barn.
The garden is lawned and has a number of fruit trees and shrubs.
Parking space is available at the entrance to the property.
The gite is suitable for all visitors and is all on one level (so no stairs to negotiate).
We have been married for getting on for 35 years, and have 2 grown up children who both work as teachers in the UK. We needed a 'project' that would enable us to not only to live in the countryside, but would also allow us to meet new people and make new friends. With our first years experience under our belt and with a lot of hard graft in getting the gites up to the standard we would wish to find as our holiday home, we definitely made the right decision in making the jump to France.
|Year property purchased||2016|
|Why this location?||Not only are the gites in an area that is easily accessible from the UK, but it is also in the one of the sunniest regions of France. We are surrounded by arable farmland and this means an abundance of sunflower fields in the summer months. Although we are in an rural location we are lucky to have some fantastic restaurants and tourist attractions that are well worth visiting. There some great markets and supermarkets within 15 minutes drive, and our local town of Chaunay (5 mins drive) has a convenience store, boulangerie, bar and chemist.|
|Unique benefits of property||One of the key features of the gites are that they are both detached, and are not linked to the owners house. This ensures a certain amount of privacy that we think is important when holidaying. The swimming pool area is an absolute sun trap and is surrounded by a Honeysuckle hedge on 3 sides. All of our guests fall in love with our pride and joy 'Big Barn'. This fantastic space allows guests to have a barbecue, play table tennis, sit in the shade for a mid afternoon nap, or to have a drink and look up at the night sky looking at the milky way. You may even get lucky with our resident Little Owls that nest in our house, or even spot the barn owls that sometimes hunt in the garden.
The gites were both fully refurbished in 2016 to a high standard and have so far met with the approval of all our previous guests.
One of our personal favourites located on the banks of the Charente river in the town of Civray. The presentation of the food is fantastic and the menu changes often. What can be better than eating outside in the evening under a canopy of trees festooned with outdoor lights. The dessert menu is to die for, and if you can't decide what to have then go for the Cafe Gourmand, which is a small sample of all the desserts that they do, plus an Espresso coffee. You will not be dissapointed.
This lovely restaurant is situated between Sauze Vaussais and Civray and takes around 20 minutes from our property. A great location either indoors or out, and great tasting food. Some evenings they have music from local bands etc.
If you can't do without your Sunday lunch Angleterre style, then this is the place to go to. We regularly visit for our fix of either roast beef or lamb etc with all the trimmings. The price is excellent too with 3 courses including wine for under 20 euros. They are also open on other selected days with other menus.
Excellent restaurant for either Plat du Jour at lunchtime or an evening meal. Located in the stunning village of Verteuil-sur-Charente, with its amazing Chateau on the banks of the Charente river. Well worth a visit to both the restaurant and the village for a photo on the bridge with the Chateau in the back drop.
Spend the day in the company of over 350 monkeys, many in total freedom. This park is only 20 minutes from the property and offers some great photo opportunites with our early relatives.
This futuristic theme park is situated just outside Poitiers and is in the top 10 of French tourist attractions. Most of the rides are indoors so are not effected by poor weather. But you must stick around for the lazer show at night.
Lovely city about 35 minutes north of Chaunay. There are a great variety of shops and restaurants but the real jewel is the splendid cathedral which has a carved stone facade and amazing stained glass windows.
La Rochelle is a popular coastal town with a stunning harbour with a rich history. By car it takes around 1 hour 40 mins so a day trip is easily achievable to sample the shopping and restaurants.
Il de Re is an island of around 85 km2 just off of the coast near La Rochelle. You will need to access the island via a toll bridge, but the cost is well worth it to visit such a stunning location full of glorious beaches, boutiques and restaurants.
We are very lucky to have a gym within the village and it is just a short sprint (or 150 metre jog) from our property. It is run by Becci and Paul, and judging by the amount of support it is getting from the locals it looks like it is going from strength to strength. So if you want to maintain your fitness whilst holidaying with us, or you want to start getting fit, then you have the facilities on your doorstep.
Glen and Mandy have done an amazing job at creating a calm and restful place for a holiday, the facilities are amazing and they really have thought of everything! We were all so impressed with the décor, furnishings and how spotlessly clean it was. Outside, the gite has a private area with a large table and chairs and a BBQ. Beyond our own garden area are the grounds of the gites, which offer space to play badminton and boules, as well as Glen’s fabulous fruit and vegetable garden, which Glen generously shared with us. The large barn area, with table tennis, dart board, snooker table and a large seating area was the perfect place to spend time together as a family and actually get to play games with our kids that didn’t involve anything that you have to charge up or plug in! The swimming pool is a great size and well maintained. It is enclosed with trellising of fragrant honeysuckle that provides welcome shade on one side of the pool patio. There are plenty of comfortable beds to lounge on and a table and chairs should you want to sit and eat by the pool. Glen and Mandy are the perfect hosts, they are incredibly welcoming and friendly, but without being at all intrusive. The gite is well located to explore the surrounding area and Glen and Mandy recommended some great places for us to visit. We really have had the most perfect of family holidays. Glen and Mandy truly appreciate how precious holiday time is and they have done an incredible job at making it perfect.
Dear Clayton Family
Thank you ever so much for your comprehensive and glowing review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your two week stay with us, and you certainly made full use of our facilities.
It was also great that you visited many of the tourist spots from Ile de Rey to Aradour sur Glane, and also took to kayaking on the Charente. Josh and Connor will be pleased to hear that they still occupy the two fastest times in the five length challenge, plus I don't think that we will see a more competitive game of boules this year !
Thanks for choosing our gites and we hope that we see you again.
Glen and Mandy
We had an excellent holiday at L'Escapade with such a warm welcome from Glen and Mandy. A beautiful gite in a gorgeous setting made for a wonderful week of sightseeing and relaxing. Glen and Mandy were so helpful and hospitable and made us feel at home.
Thank you very much for your great review, it was a pleasure to have you stay with us. I hope that you all enjoyed the 'oriental supper' that we arranged in the barn. It was a new addition that we thought that we would experiment with and allowed all the guests to get together around the table and sample the food prepared by the external chef. From the comments received I think that we will try it again.
I think that you certainly made the most of your weeks stay with numerous trips out to the surrounding places of interest. We were impressed with your holiday rule of allowing each member of the family to pick their prefered day trip out.
We hope to see you all again.

This is a lovely gite set in a friendly hamlet within a beautiful setting. Glen was on hand for guidance and it was good to see him taking such care of the properties and grounds and swimming pool. To sit around the pool under a terrace of honeysuckle was wonderful and as the weather was so hot we could just slip into the pool to cool. There is an area for eating outside, privately set next to the gite, and indeed we enjoyed eating there on every occasion. The gite itself was super clean and tidy, the beds are comfortable and made ready before arrival and there are plenty of clean towels to use throughout the stay. I loved the welcome basket and it meant we could begin relaxing as soon as we arrived. This is a super gite, I would thoroughly recommend a stay here. You won't regret it.
Dear Ray and Gillian
Thank you for your more than positive feedback. You have certainly given us something to live up to.
It certainly was a scorcher during your week with us and I was really glad that you made it out to the Porte Bleue restaurant in Verteuil sur Charante, as it has become one of our favourites.
You also managed a couple of touristy days out, but there is still loads to do, so dont leave it too long before you come back.

Chaunay Gites are situated just outside of Chaunay in a quiet and relaxing but easy to find location.
We were warmly welcomed by the owners, who showed us to our 2 bedroomed Gite which has been completely renovated to a high standard. The photos do not do it justice. The Gite was spotlessly clean and nothing was out of place. The beds were very comfortable with high quality linens and bedding especially the pillows. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a BBQ in our own private outside seating area that looks across the garden area.
The remaining outside area is shared with the one bedroomed Gite. There is a badminton area, boules area and a fabulous barn area that contains communal seating, BBQ and table tennis. Adjacent to the barn is the outdoor pool which was maintained by the owner every day. It was lovely to relax around the pool on the sun loungers, the owners have ensured that there are plenty of sun loungers around the pool area so that you can relax either in the sun or in the shade.
The owners Glen and Mandy live onsite in the main house, but have the perfect balance are being there if you need them but also giving you your space. They recommended places to visit and where best to shop for groceries and also petrol.
We can wholeheartedly recommend staying at Chaunay Gites
