L'Escapade is a wonderful gite that was a former bakery for the village and still houses the original oven in the lounge. The whole gite was given a total refurbishment in 2016 and therefore is still looking very new.
The kitchen is well equipped with oven, hob, dishwasher, fridge and microwave. There are plenty of utensils to assist guests that want to cook meals etc.
There is a table and chairs to seat 4 within the lounge area.
The living room has 2 sofas and a coffee -table, plus a television that can receive UK channels (BBC, ITV etc). This room has feature stone walls and the original bread oven.
There are 2 tastefully decorated bedrooms. The first bedroom has a double bed with 2 bedside cabinets and a drawer unit.
The second bedroom has twin beds with a wardrobe and bedside cabinet.
The tiled bathroom has a large shower enclosure, with wash hand basin and toilet.
The gite has its own private shaded patio area with table and chairs. A barbecue is also located within the patio area should guests not wish to use the one in the barn.
The garden is lawned and has a number of fruit trees and shrubs.
Parking space is available at the entrance to the property.
The gite is suitable for all visitors and is all on one level (so no stairs to negotiate).
We have been married for getting on for 35 years, and have 2 grown up children who both work as teachers in the UK. We needed a 'project' that would enable us to not only to live in the countryside, but would also allow us to meet new people and make new friends. With our first years experience under our belt and with a lot of hard graft in getting the gites up to the standard we would wish to find as our holiday home, we definitely made the right decision in making the jump to France.
|Year property purchased||2016|
|Why this location?||Not only are the gites in an area that is easily accessible from the UK, but it is also in the one of the sunniest regions of France. We are surrounded by arable farmland and this means an abundance of sunflower fields in the summer months. Although we are in an rural location we are lucky to have some fantastic restaurants and tourist attractions that are well worth visiting. There some great markets and supermarkets within 15 minutes drive, and our local town of Chaunay (5 mins drive) has a convenience store, boulangerie, bar and chemist.|
|Unique benefits of property||One of the key features of the gites are that they are both detached, and are not linked to the owners house. This ensures a certain amount of privacy that we think is important when holidaying. The swimming pool area is an absolute sun trap and is surrounded by a Honeysuckle hedge on 3 sides. All of our guests fall in love with our pride and joy 'Big Barn'. This fantastic space allows guests to have a barbecue, play table tennis, sit in the shade for a mid afternoon nap, or to have a drink and look up at the night sky looking at the milky way. You may even get lucky with our resident Little Owls that nest in our house, or even spot the barn owls that sometimes hunt in the garden.
The gites were both fully refurbished in 2016 to a high standard and have so far met with the approval of all our previous guests.
Probably the most picturesque restaurant for eating outside. Set beside a weir on the Charante river, this former mill will not disapoint. We prefer to eat at lunchtime in order to enjoy the views. However, the menu du jour at 13.50 euros for three courses also helps steer us to this restaurant. You must book as it is very popular during the holiday season.
One of our personal favourites located on the banks of the Charente river in the town of Civray. The presentation of the food is fantastic and the menu changes often. What can be better than eating outside in the evening under a canopy of trees festooned with outdoor lights. The dessert menu is to die for, and if you can't decide what to have then go for the Cafe Gourmand, which is a small sample of all the desserts that they do, plus an Espresso coffee. You will not be dissapointed.
This lovely restaurant is situated between Sauze Vaussais and Civray and takes around 20 minutes from our property. A great location either indoors or out, and great tasting food. Some evenings they have music from local bands etc.
If you can't do without your Sunday lunch Angleterre style, then this is the place to go to. We regularly visit for our fix of either roast beef or lamb etc with all the trimmings. The price is excellent too with 3 courses including wine for under 20 euros. They are also open on other selected days with other menus.
Excellent restaurant for either Plat du Jour at lunchtime or an evening meal. Located in the stunning village of Verteuil-sur-Charente, with its amazing Chateau on the banks of the Charente river. Well worth a visit to both the restaurant and the village for a photo on the bridge with the Chateau in the back drop.
Spend the day in the company of over 350 monkeys, many in total freedom. This park is only 20 minutes from the property and offers some great photo opportunites with our early relatives.
This futuristic theme park is situated just outside Poitiers and is in the top 10 of French tourist attractions. Most of the rides are indoors so are not effected by poor weather. But you must stick around for the lazer show at night.
Lovely city about 35 minutes north of Chaunay. There are a great variety of shops and restaurants but the real jewel is the splendid cathedral which has a carved stone facade and amazing stained glass windows.
La Rochelle is a popular coastal town with a stunning harbour with a rich history. By car it takes around 1 hour 40 mins so a day trip is easily achievable to sample the shopping and restaurants.
Il de Re is an island of around 85 km2 just off of the coast near La Rochelle. You will need to access the island via a toll bridge, but the cost is well worth it to visit such a stunning location full of glorious beaches, boutiques and restaurants.
We are very lucky to have a gym within the village and it is just a short sprint (or 150 metre jog) from our property. It is run by Becci and Paul, and judging by the amount of support it is getting from the locals it looks like it is going from strength to strength. So if you want to maintain your fitness whilst holidaying with us, or you want to start getting fit, then you have the facilities on your doorstep.
We stayed at Glen and Mandy's larger gite and had such a wonderful week. The gite itself is perfect for a family of 4 - clean, comfortable and really well kitted out - we had everything we needed. The incredible garden - along with Glen's generosity in allowing us to have the pick of his homegrown fruit and veg - was a massive added bonus having 2 boys with endless bags of energy. There were games to play not to mention the fantastic swimming pool. The area itself is beautiful and there was so much to do, we didn't manage to fit it all in - kayaking near Ruffec (an absolute must with kids), river swimming, walks, go-karting, Monkey Valley (the kids really enjoyed this, its a fantastic place to spend the day), beautiful villages and towns, restaurants. The barn that they have converted is a gorgeous place to sit and while away the time, and we enjoyed socialising with the other gusts as well as Glen and Mandy who are always on-hand but not the least bit obtrusive. Its peaceful and quiet, lots of nature and especially good for bird lovers - Glen is very knowledgeable too! Supermarkets are close by and excellent, as are restaurants, some English run and some French. Thank you Glen and Mandy for a memorable holiday.
Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review and it is great when we get such positive feedback from our guests. Your family certainly crammed a great deal into your week with us and it was not surprising to hear what the your boys chose to do on your last day with us. Kayaking.....and for the second time within the week. Even Mandy cant get enough of the her trips down the Charente. Thank you also for finding another attraction in the area.....the pedal go kart track and mazes.
We also get a lot of enjoyment from the guests that stay with us, and that was certainly true with you guys. The last night in the barn playing Birdy with the guests from both gites was great fun and I know the other couple enjoyed your company as well.

We were so excited to return to Chaunay Gites for our summer holiday this year. We loved our weeks stay last year so much we decided this year to return but for 2 weeks this time . Glen's warm welcome after a long journey from Scotland was greatly appreciated and we felt at home the second we stepped out of the car. The gite, gardens and pool were immaculate as always and were maintained to extremely high level throughout our stay. Glen was always around should we need anything, including making reservations for us at the local restaurants, not to mention sharing his tool box with Jack so he could fix his scooter. We spent many days chilling by the pool and other days we ventured out exploring the local area. This year we visited Cognac (we would recommend The Hennessy tour) and La Rochelle (the aquarium was superb), but the family favourite was the local monkey park which was a big hit. During our stay Glen managed to get us reservations at the Cafe Portebleue, in Verteuil-sur-Charente. This has to be one of the most picturesque villages which we enjoyed visiting a few times during our stay. We spent most evenings BBQ outside the gite along with a few late night rounders games, darts and table tennis. We would highly recommend Chaunay Gites, nothing is too much trouble. We will definitely return again. Thank you again. Laura, Craig, Jack and Christopher x
Hi Laura and family
Thank you so much for your review and more importantly, for returning back to us for a second year, especially coming all the way by car from Glasgow.
It was a pleasure to host you all again, and it is always a livlier place with the two lads doing their stuff on their custom built scooters.
We are constantly discovering new things and restaurants for our guests to visit so there is always something different to do when you visit again, and we really hope that you do.
Glen and Mandy
We had a fantastic week staying at Glen& Mandy's cottage. They are so welcoming and we were made to feel at home very quickly. The welcome pack was a lovely touch and our kids loved the doughnuts ! The accommodation is very good with good quality fixtures and fittings and a very well kitted out kitchen with everything you could need and more you didn't think you needed. The cottage was spotless and it feels like you're the first people to stay there ! The pool is fantastic and we spent many happy hours either in or sitting around the pool. Our teenage kids very much appreciated the wifi so were still able to stay in contact with the outside world !! Glen and Mandy were incredibly friendly and always on hand if we needed anything and had good suggestions of things to do. The cottage is in the heart of agricultural France and so if you want a peaceful holiday the setting is ideal. You will need a car, but we enjoyed out daily drive to the local village to get croissants and a baguette. My son and I did venture out on the mountain bikes ( free to use) one afternoon, but it was 32 degrees so it didn't last long!! supermarkets are 10 min drive away and there is a petrol garage there too. We enjoyed a bbq every other night on the bbq situated right outside our cottage and ate on the lovely outdoor seating area. There is a badminton court and table tennis table for everyones use. It was a great holiday and I can't praise the accommodation enough, fantastic holiday & fantastic hosts
Dear Chris and family
Thank you so much for your very detailed review. We are so glad that you all enjoyed yourselves and you certainly made good use of the pool, which was helped by the fantastic weather that we have had this year.
We love to see our guests making the most of our facilities when they are staying with us.
Thank you again for your lovely comments and we would love to see you back at Chaunay Gites in the not too distant future.
Glen and Mandy
Having stayed in over 12 gites over the years this has been by far our favourite. The gite and gardens are even better than the photos. We had everything we could have asked for. Glen had thought of everything. The gite, gardens and pool were immaculate and maintained during our stay to a very high standard. We felt relaxed the second we arrived. Glen was on hand to answer any questions about the area and made reservations for us in local restaurants. All the small special touches really made this gite stand out, the welcome pack on arrival, fresh vegetables and fruit from the garden, Glen picking up fresh croissants from the bakery when he was down in the village. Nothing was too much trouble. We would highly recommend staying at Chaunay gites, you will not be disappointed. We definitely plan to return.
Hi Laura and family
Thank you so much for your lovely review, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. The only shame was that Mandy was not around as she would have enjoyed you and your families company. Hopefully we can make sure that she is around if we are fortunate to have you stay with us again.
Your two lads were great to have around and I dont think that I have ever met such polite children before, they are a credit to you and Craig. It was fun taking them out on one of my late evening 'rural safaris' to show them the local wildlife.
Thank you again.
