About this property

A Pretty Cottage for 4 People, with Private Garden.. This cottage/gite is in a town setting.

Muguet is French for 'Lily of the Valley and means 'Bringer of Happiness', 'Porteur de Bonheur'. This charming detached cottage is located in the old quarter of Civray that once echoed to the sounds of the Knights Templar, with their ancient Commanderie being only 100 metres away. Just a stone's throw from the River Charente and an easy stroll into the historic town of Civray, the house is an ideal place to forget the stresses of modern-day life.

Tastefully decorated throughout with high quality furnishings, a cosy ambiance prevails which means that guests often just wish to stay 'home' and relax. Guests will be greeted by the friendly owners who will supply information on where to go and what to do. For those wishing to brush up on their language skills, books are supplied in French (and English) and there is also both French and English television.

Imagine just walking into the town to collect your bread or pastries from a choice of boulangeries, buying food from the local ├ępicerie for your picnic, or slipping into one of the local eateries for lunch or dinner. A market is in situ twice a week with the food market taking place on a Friday morning. In the summer there is a choice of open-air concerts, firework displays and other events, with the locals participating enthusiastically.

A drive into some of the nearby villages reveals the hidden side to this charming part of the Poitou-Charentes. Blanzay is one of the prettiest villages in the area, yet for connoisseurs of fine wines Cognac is only an hour distant.

For city life, there is Poitiers to the north, Angouleme and Bordeaux to the south, Niort to the west ,each with its own identity and charm. The coast of La Rochelle is just 1 1/2 hours away and for walking/cycling enthusiasts there are many tracks and trails in the local area.

Something for everyone with the prettiest cottage to which to return at the end of the day.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Frances Lesley Wedge

We bought a house in France in 2008 to escape the rat-race, in 2011 we moved here permanently and have not looked back. Civray is our local town that we love very much, but there are so many pretty villages and hamlets in this area and always events taking place. We have become part of our local community, being taken aback by the warm welcome given to us, our approach to life has changed for the better.

Year property purchased 2016
Why this location? The pretty cottage is just a short walk to the centre of historic Civray, with its restaurants, cafe-bars, shops and boulangeries, the quest for the best 'tarte citron' is an excuse to try a different boulangerie each week! If you are a fan of watersports, the river meanders through the centre of the town and it is possible to hire a canoe, with a local guide dropping you off and collecting you and your canoe at different points along the river. At Saint-Macoux there is a super leisure lake while the town boasts a brand new leisure centre comprising indoor and outdoor heated pools. For the not-so energetic there are some lovely walks across the fields of sunflowers and through nearby woodland; wildlife abounds. If you are looking for bright lights the city of Poitiers is an easy 30 minute drive and here you can hop on a TGV network train and be in Paris within 1 1/4 hours! Food plays a big part in people's lives here and you will find a twice-weekly market in Civray.
Unique benefits of property La Maison Muguet offers flexible accommodation, with its own parking, pretty and private garden with terrace and lawn, yet being just a short walk into the town. The house has been tastefully decorated throughout yet retains its original features, offering a lovely, homely and relaxing ambiance. The cottage is located on a no-through road; it is so peaceful and all you can hear are the birds and the distant ringing of the church bell or, sometimes the pleasant sound of distant singing or piano-playing drifts across the garden from the town music-school. The River Charente meanders past the end of the road, with abundant wildlife, so a picnic is a must! The house offers 2 good sized bedrooms configured as a double and a twin, a lounge/dining room with fireplace and log burner, a large breakfasting kitchen, bathroom and two wcs.
