Charroux is a small local town for your daily baguette, which has a weekly market on Thursdays for fruits, vegetables, cheeses, fish etc. In the centre is the remains of the Benedictine Charroux Abbey, founded in the 8th Century. Lovely restaurant O'Chat Roux for eating out locally. Post office, Bank, Tabac and bars.

On 10 June 1944, the village of Oradour-sur-Glane in Haute-Vienne in Nazi-occupied France was destroyed, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. A new village was built nearby after the war, but French president Charles de Gaulle ordered the original maintained as a permanent memorial and museum.
Large weekly market on Tuesday and Friday's selling fish, fruit, vegetables, cheeses, clothes, household items, flowers/plants etc. lovely atmosphere!
Poitiers is a city with lots of older buildings and churches. On the outskirts of the city you will find the larger shopping stores. Also the theme park Futuroscope (www.futuroscope.com)
We had a delightful week at Burgundy Volets. We wanted a quiet location with a large pool for a week of R and R. That is exactly what we got. We arrived and had a warm welcome from the owners and were shown around the property. The welcome package was very generous! The gites was clean and had a spacious living/kitchen area where we spent most of our time when inside. The pool is a very short walk from the house and properly fenced off. A nice touch was the provision of a large cold box so we could load up and spend time up at the pool. The owners lived next door but were discrete which was appreciated. We didn’t do much sight seeing but did enjoy the market at Civray ( the nearest town with a Supermarket we think). We enjoyed a few walks and stargazing at night. I would recommend this gites. We did go to Futuroscope after the gites which is only a hour away and would recommend that as a day out or pre / post holiday addition, but do pay for the premium pass which helps skip the queues.
Thank you very much for your comments, most appreciated. It was lovely to hear a family having great fun in the swimming pool, playing badminton and enjoying the football table. We look forward to seeing you all again. Thank you!!
