Visit Carcassonne which remains the most popular monument in Southern France, the reconstructed medieval citadel is a must-see. Cathar castles abound with Montsegur the most famous as the heretics last stand in this dramatic location. See the stunning town of Mirepoix and enjoy a relaxed lunch in the medieval square or visit La Grotte de Niaux where the fantastic prehistoric cave art is still open to the public. Discover the secrets of Rennes-le-Chateau and search for the hidden treasure undiscovered for 100 years…..will you be the one to unearth the hoard ? The Sunday market at nearby Esperaza draws in people from miles around to savour the sights, smells and sounds of an authentic French experience. Spain, the Mediterranean, Andorra and the Pyrenees are all within reach….but above all enjoy the endless days of sunshine and warm summer evenings.
Try La Galerie in nearby Quillan, newly refurbished it offers dishes from homemade pizzas to local specialities either a la carte or set menus are available.
The Poulet Bicyclette with seating out over a small fish filled lake is a favorite. In the hills above Saint-Ferriol it also features a 'chicken village' !
On the way to Carcassonne La Taverne a Bacchus near Limoux comes highly recommended. Situated on an old wine estate you can choose either to sit in or outside under large umbrellas.
The Galamus Gorges are spectacular. Walk down the path to visit the chapel located in a cave. Its on the way to the beach at Perpignan don't miss these views !
Visit the botanical gardens in Limoux for an afternoon of peaceful wandering through the two hectares and 2500 plants in these perfumed gardens.
Let Veronique saddle you up for a trail ride. The stables are only five minutes from the village.
White water rafting and kayaking is on offer all along the river Aude......a good way to cool off on a hot day !
Our favorite is the Green Labyrinth in nearby Nebias......amazing !!
Catch the famous Yellow Train for an unforgettable ride up through the mountains, it's fast downhill all the way back !
Newly opened lake only 6 km away at Quillan has a beach and also pleasant walks with picnicing and all facilities on site, including a restaurant.
Fantastic gite in idyllic location. Simon and Martina have created a superb home and were wonderful hosts. Simon’s knowledge of the area was incredibly helpful. The location was perfect setting for exploring the countryside in what can only be described as a beautiful part of the world. Also perfect place for day trips to Mediterranean beaches and several bigger cities. We had a wonderful 10 days at La Chapelle and will definitely return.
Thanks for such a fantastic review ! We are so glad that you both enjoyed your visit and next time we must have that drink !
This is a nice comfortable property in a really good location with a great view from the bedroom and dining area. It was spotlessly clean when we arrived and we were met by Simon, the owner, who was very friendly and welcoming. Although the village is a typical quaint French village there are no shops or restaurants there. This is not a problem, however, as everything you want can be found within a few miles. There is level access to the property and only a few steps inside - from bedroom to kitchen and from kitchen to dining / sitting area. There is a private parking space to the rear of the property up a slight hill but cars can be loaded and unloaded outside the front door. The owners are a lovely couple and Simon is very knowledgeable about the area and gave us some great advice on places to visit. There is a fantastic drive across the Pyrenees and into Spain and the views are extraordinary. I would recommend this property to anyone and we would love to stay here again.
Thanks for the great review, we are so glad that you both enjoyed your stay and we would love to welcome you back here to Brenac again. Hoping that the rest of your trip went as well as your time here and that you arrived back home without incident. Simon and Martina.
La Chappelle is a most comfortable gite set in a quiet and beautiful location on the edge of the village of Brenac.
Simon & Martina, the owners, are most welcoming and very helpful with local information. They will do an initial shop for essentials if asked, which is most helpful. We had many interesting conversations with them during our week's stay.
The village of Brenac is charming and picturesque, set in a valley amongst the hills, but without any shops. The nearest town, Quillan, is in the next valley, about a 10 minute drive, and two good supermarkets are also about 10 minutes away.
The gite itself is clean, roomy and well appointed; comfortable bed, good shower facilities, a well equipped kitchen, dining table and comfortable lounge furniture, with all the extras you might need. There is also a peaceful garden with relaxing chairs to while away any spare time, sipping a nice glass of wine or two! It is a really super place to unwind.
The region around is dramatic, interesting and well worth visiting, with some stunning views of the hilltop castles for which it is famous. Travelling to the south towards the higher parts of the Pyrenees, the countryside becomes more mountainous and spectacular; well worth the drive.
Hi.....thanks very much for a lovely review. We are so glad that you both enjoyed yourselves and appreciated our wonderful surroundings. Hopefully we will see you back here soon in the not too distant future. It was great to meet you both....thanks again. Simon and Martina.
A lovely property in a lovely part of France. Very well situated for walking and the views from the lounge are wonderful. The area is good for birds (Griffon and Egyptian Vultures very near the house, Nightingales singing) and the wild flowers were stunning when we visited in early June - the area has a phenomenal number of orchid species and some are very abundant.
Simon and Martina were great hosts and very helpful during our stay. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the property or the area in general.
Many thanks for the great review. It was a pleasure to have you both to stay and we are glad that you got to see so much flora and fauna......we are indeed very fortunate to live in as you say a lovely part of France. Hope to see you both again soon.
