About this property

Newly Converted Barn with Pool. This apartment is in a rural setting.

Converted from a 500 year old barn in 2015, this ground-floor apartment boasts a spacious kitchen, large plunge pool, private garden and separate entrance with parking. Nestled in a dramatic landscape but with amenities only 5 minutes away.
There has been a way station here for hundreds of years being half way between Perpignan and Carcassonne on what used to be the old main route.   The apartment has been rebuilt from the old barn, we have retained some of the original features whilst adding all the modern comforts we would want to have on holiday.
The apartment is attached to our house and we are available at any time for assistance.  We are passionate about the area, happy to provide any local insight or information as to things to do, restaurants to recommend, places to visit or shop.
There are 2 bedrooms - one master bedroom and the other which is currently furnished with 2 single beds. If, however, you wish the second bedroom to contain a double bed instead, let us know and we can change it. There is also a sofabed in the living room which can be converted.
The apartment was built on a single level to be easily accessible but it is not strictly-speaking wheelchair friendly.
We only accept week long bookings.
Pets are not allowed.
We ask you leave the place as clean and tidy as you will find it.
Due to the pool, no glassware is permitted but we have provided high-end and durable plastic glasses to avoid the stress of any major accident occurring and ask that you please don't eat too near the pool.
Despite feeling like you are in the middle of nowhere surrounded by mountains (there are stunning walks on our doorstep), we are less than 5 minutes drive away from a large supermarket (Carrefour) with 24 hour petrol station and 7 minutes away from the centre of Quillan which boasts 18 restaurants, weekly markets, shops and boulangeries.

We are spoilt for activities, steeped in history with impressive castles within half an hour, amazing natural wonders, white water rafting on our door step, fishing, fine dining, gliding, swimming lakes etc.

We are 80 minutes from the Mediterranean in one direction and in the other you will be on the ski slopes in less than an hour.

Kitchen and dining

The kitchen is a very good size, fully equipped (including items such as dishwasher, microwave, cooker, washing machine, kettle and toaster) and recently installed (2015). The kitchen opens out onto the sunterrace where you will find an outdoor table and 6 chairs and a plancha (gas powered hot plate for outdoor cooking) in one direction and the indoor living room with an indoor dining table and 4 chairs in the other. Both eating areas have exceptional views.

Living rooms

The living room is very large, east-facing and simply decorated combining new furnishings (bought in 2016) with the old restored oak beams above. The living room includes a tv, dvd, BluRay players, a double sofabed and plenty of room for you to store your holiday items

There are 2 bedrooms, both east facing where you can see the sun rise in the mornings between the mountain tops in the distance across fields. The master bedroom has a double bed and wardrobe. All furnishings are new (bought 2016) apart from the antique mirror and painting which contrast delightfully with the old beams overheard and the alcove recently created from an ancient arrow-slit window in the wall. The second bedroom can either be furnished with a double bed or 2 single beds depending on your requirements.

Both bathroom facilities have been created in 2015 out of part of what used to be an old barn, we have left an arrow-slit window in place in the main bathroom, which includes a shower, toilet and mirrored basin. An additional separate toilet has been installed next to the bathroom.

There are convection heaters in the bedrooms and living room and a heated towel rail in the kitchen

As well as the tv and wireless internet, we have provided a box of more traditional games such as scrabble and trivial pursuit. Within our area you will find a host of outdoor activities and historical interest - such as whitewater rafting, Rennes le Chateau, the lake at Puivert, the maze at Nebias, the dinosaur museum at Esperaza. There are 18 restaurants and bars in Quillan itself as well as fetes and weekly markets. If you tire of the outstanding landscape and natural wonders of the gorge, forests, mountains, the river on our doorstep (be warned we haven't) you can drive to the Mediterranean coast within 90 minutes, or the ski slopes in less than an hour or Barcelona in less than 3 hours for a city fix.

Garden and outside

The garden is paved and tiled around the pool. North-facing it provides welcome shade during the summer months for al fresco dining (we have bought an easy to use and easy to clean gas-fired plancha for outdoor barbecuing). The pool is fully in the sun and there is a sun bathing area with sun loungers for the sun worshippers amongst you. The pool is 4.6 metres by 2.2 metres (we think of it as a large plunge pool).

Parking and garages

There is parking for a large car on a gravelled area by your separate front gate (which is a separate private entrance to your garden and leads to your front door) which is off the road down a lane on the side of the property. In addition, if you have another car or a visitor, there is parking where we park in front of our house on the road.

Visitor suitability

The whole apartment is on the ground floor and the garden has been recently levelled, paved and tiled so it is suitable for people who have difficulty with stairs (although we are not strictly speaking wheelchair friendly). We do not accept pets.

Information about any additional facilities

Although the house itself is in a small hamlet of Laval nestled in stunning hills, we are actually less than a 5 minute drive to the nearest large supermarket with 24 hour petrol station. The town centre of Quillan is also less than 7 minutes away where you will find weekly markets, 18 bars and restaurants and plenty of activities.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Daniela Harris

We bought this place looking for somewhere permanent to start a new life outside of the hustle and bustle of London living. The minute we laid eyes on the property we knew we had found the perfect place and spent the next 3 years renovating it to create 2 unique spaces that we could be proud to rent out as holiday destinations

Year property purchased 2013
Why this location? Le Waystation is uniquely positioned at the foothills of the Pyrenees, in some beautiful countryside off the beaten track but not far from it. The place has a rich history and is littered with Cathar castles across its verdant rolling hills. It has long been a destination for hikers, historians, watersports, skiing and cycling enthusiasts and now the town itself is poised to welcome visitors throughout the year. We are under an hour from the coast, but only 5 minutes from the nearest swimming lake. We love it because it is one of the last regions of France that remains uncrowded even at the height of summer.
Unique benefits of property The Waystation may be over 500 years old but we renovated it to make it a modern, bright and clean environment for holiday living. The pool is a plunge pool (there is a lake 2km along our road for proper swimming) and the place is just 2 bedrooms so it is ideal for smaller groups or couples to enjoy a bit of luxury without costing the earth. The views across the mountains are breathtaking and everyone remarks on the tranquility of the place, despite only being 5 minutes drive from all the amenities you might want. We also live next door so are always on hand to share our experiences, advice and recommendations.

The Owner Recommends

There are at least a dozen castles to visit within an hour's drive from our place all of which impress and ignite the imagination - not least of which because they are mostly built on impossibly high ground

Dining Al Fresco

During the warm months (May-September) the Poulet et Bicyclette restaurant opens its door in the woods near us where you can enjoy a meal by the pool filled with coy carp and the kids can go and explore the quirky chicken village whilst waiting for their food

Dinosaur Museum

Discover Europe's largest dinosaur find and excavation, a museum which rivals the Natural History Museum in London but without the crowds.

Gliding in Puivert

Take the opportunity to go gliding across the plateau at Puivert and ride the thermals at a really reasonable price which you would get in the UK. If you have never done it before and are too chicken to hand glide (Like I am) it is the option for you

The Gorge de Galamus

One of the most extraordinary monasteries in the world is carved a kilometre above the river in a gorge in the rock - it is a must see and a hair raising drive to get there will ensure you never forget it

The Med

Head down to the Mediterranean for a day trip (it takes less than an hour and half) if you fancy a day on the beach and some fresh seafood

Whitewater Rafting

You could not ask for more spectacular landscape as you raft down the Pierre Lys from Axat to Quillan through a gorge surrounded by cliffs with vultures circling overhead

10 / 10 Ro Toberts 1 August, 2016

This beautiful place is just perfect for those who want a tranquil, historic holiday experience. The area is absolutely stunning. The house is very well-equipped and renovated to a high standard. Very comfy beds and really tastefully decorated. The pool and patio is perfect for a sunny day. The area is very historic with the most beautiful little towns dotted throughout the hills and mountains. We visited with our 3 year-old who loved the pool, the house and Dani & Lee, who are so friendly and gave us great ideas for days out. Their suggestions meant we got to see some places we might not have visited. We only really scratched the surface during our week at Le Waystation, so we will definitely return again to carry on the adventure.
- The house & pool - absolutely perfect
- The countryside & historic towns
-Trip to Roses, Spain (@2h30 drive)
-Seeing a wild boar, an eagle, a vulture, a red squirrel and a snake (not at the house!!!)
-Driving through the Pyrenees
-Le poulet et bicyclette restaurant & chicken museum (worth an off-road drive!)
-The food
-Dani & Lee - genuinely lovely people!
-Eric the wonder dog

We flew into Toulouse Blagnac and hired a car from Europcar at the airport, then drove (2hours of beautiful scenery) to Le Waystation. Driving is very easy with little traffic. We rarely feel as reluctant as we did to go home. A truly fantastic holiday!
Thank you, Dani & Lee x
