Why this location? We wanted to buy a home within walking distance of a pretty and authentic village yet with peace and quiet and privacy. We think Villa La Cascade delivers all of this and more. We love wine and visiting vineyards and this part of France has a wide range of fabulous wine producers. Increasingly, many visitors travel to Languedoc to discover France as it used to be and this is an ideal way to get a real taste of what France has to offer. It’s a region that has managed to remain unspoilt for many years. Olive groves, sunny villages, orchards and of course some of the most extensive vineyards in the world are there to be explored. For those interested in food and wine there are endless opportunities and excellent restaurants so you can sample all the local produce at the one sitting! Ancient monasteries, vine covered hills and picturesque villages dominate the landscape and tourist attractions include the ancient city of Carcassonne - less than an hour away from the villa.
Unique benefits of property The magnificent views set at the edge of the old village of Durban Corbieres, complete with medieval castle. It’s only an hour or so from both Perpignan and Carcassonne airports and within walking distance of the village and bakery it delivers high quality accommodation for up to 6 adults in three en suite bedrooms with fabulous vistas over the Corbieres hills. We believe this is the perfect location for an idyllic holiday in this still undiscovered yet easily accessible part of Mediterranean France. The location is very quiet and beautifully maintained and we have an uninterrupted view of the Corbieres hills from our lovely secluded garden. In fact our guests always comment on the memorable views from the villa. And finally - high quality finishes and the fact that this is our own home from home so we hope that you take the opportunity to chose Villa La Cascade yourself and experience what this undiscovered part of Languedoc has to offer.

Discovering the Land of the Cathars

This is Cathar country – one of the most inspiring and dramatic landscapes in Europe. Located in the heart of the picturesque Corbieres hills, Villa La Cascade is just perfect for either an activity packed holiday or a relaxing getaway. Within a short distance there are the ancient monasteries at Lagrasse and Fontfroide, medieval castles at Queribus and Peyrepertuse, the historic walled city of Carcassonne and the beautiful Canal du Midi meandering through the countryside north of the hills.

Durban Corbieres - Our Local Village

The village of Durban Corbières and its magnificent castle are situated deep in the Corbières on the old Route National 611, about an hour equidistant from both Carcassonne and Perpignan. Surrounded by beautiful vineyards and ancient hills, it’s a perfect place to while away a few weeks at any time of the year. The village itself is home to just under seven hundred inhabitants and boasts a supermarket, boulangerie, tabac, cafe, bank, petrol station and a mixture of other shops running alongside the River Berre. There’s also a doctor and pharmacie and a lovely flower shop. The village is a 5 minute walk downhill from the villa and caters for most of the needs of anyone renting this lovely Languedoc holiday home. The castle is the main focal point of attention and Villa La Cascade has excellent views to the old chateau. It was built on Roman ruins in the 11th century for the lords of Durban, who in turned owed their immediate allegiance to the viscounts of Narbonne. In 1229, Guillaume de Durban swore allegiance to the French monarchy and kept his lands, despite his ancestors' earlier links with the Cathars. Joseph de Gléon, Baron of Durban was the last direct descendant of the Durbans to own the castle and he died without heirs in 1787. The castle subsequently changed hands several times and a succession of owners used the stone for building material - destroying much of the castle by the end of the 19th century. The castle eventually became public property and continued to be used as a source of stone. In the 16th century the north and west walls were pierced and decorated with windows, marble columns and sculpted lintels and these were restored in the early 1970’s. The castle belongs to the commune of Durban Corbières and is in the care of the Comité de Sauvegarde du Vieux Durban. It has been listed since 1926 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture. Today, it remains a reminder of the troubled past of ancient Languedoc.

Explore Languedoc

Nearby, the thriving market towns of Narbonne and Beziers provide a wide range of shops and services, whilst the city of Perpignan offers a vibrant mix of influences – more Catalan than French in atmosphere. Swimming and wind-surfing are available in the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean at Cap Leucate, just 30 minutes away. The snowy peaks of the Pyrenees rise dramatically the south and a range of winter sports are available in ski resorts only a 2 hour drive away. Golf, tennis, horse-riding and sailing are within easy reach and the hills are criss-crossed by lovely walks for every level, all with magnificent views to the foothills of the Pyrenees. Down the hill just 5 minutes walk away is the village of Durban - a typically southern French affair, with a café, supermarket, bank, pharmacy and of course the local cave cooperative. The African Reserve at Sigean is one of the most highly rated wildlife parks in Europe and is a just 25 minutes drive from Villa La Cascade. The reserve provides an outstanding range of wildlife from lions, elephant, rhino and cheetahs and many more animals - all to be seen in a convincingly natural environment.

Languedoc Food and Wine

For lovers of food and wine, there's a wide choice. From local restaurants providing great food at reasonable prices to Michelin starred restaurants only a few minutes from the village. The rising star of Languedoc wine is the highlight for many visitors; numerous Chateaux providing ample opportunities for sampling and purchase at value for money prices that barely do justice to the exceptional quality. These are the reasons why we love the Corbieres. Combine it with the gorgeous climate, the lovely house and the uniquely relaxed pace of life to be found in the South of France and you have all the ingredients for the perfect holiday. Languedoc produces some of the best wines in France and visitors to Villa La Cascade will relish the opportunity of sampling wines from the AOC’s of Corbières, Minervois, Coteaux du Languedoc, Faugères, and St Chinian. The region's Mediterranean climate is conducive to growing a wide variety of grapes and the composition of soil in the Languedoc varies from chalk, limestone and gravel inland to alluvial soils near the coast. Among the reds, Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvedre are major grapes of the Corbières, Faugères, Fitou, and Minervois AOCs whilst Chardonnay is a major white grape, used in the Vin de Pays d'Oc and the sparkling Crémant de Limoux. If you’re planning a villa holiday in Languedoc, discovering the wines of the region can be a hugely enjoyable experience. Vineyards in the Languedoc are typically planted along the coastal plains of the Mediterranean while those in the Roussillon are found in the pretty valleys north of the Pyrenees. In many cases, visitors are welcome and are encouraged to participate in a tasting or degustation before deciding on a purchase to bring back to the villa. Amongst our favourites are the smooth, classy reds from Minervois la Livinière, Corbières-Boutenac and La Clape. The sweet fortified Muscat de St-Jean Minervois is made with the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grapes.

Narbonne - Where Old Meets New

If you want to rent a villa near Narbonne then Villa La Cascade is ideal as it is just over 30 minutes from this ancient Roman city. Narbonne is an attractive place to visit – bisected by the Canal de Robine, an off shoot of the more famous Canal du Midi. Narbonne was on the Via Domitia – the old roman road from Rome to Seville, and a small section of the road can be seen by visitors in the main square (also a great place for a coffee or some people watching!). The food market at Les Halles is one of the best in France and on the outskirts of the town on the way south towards Durban Corbieres, you can also visit the Palais du Vin and choose from an array of excellent wines from producers across Languedoc. Narbonne isn’t on the tourist trail, unlike its more illustrious neighbours such as Avignon or Carcassonne and that is part of its undiscovered charm. However it does have a number of worthwhile sights. The former cathedral of Saint-Just dating from 1272 and The "Palais des Archevêques", the Archbishop's Palace - both of which are worth a visit. There’s also a good range of restaurants, bars and cafes – all suitable for idling away an hour or two in this laid back Mediterranean city.

Where can I begin... From the ease of booking with the owner to her real understanding with all our requirements this is a lovely person to deal with. The house was immaculate and very well situated and laid out. We liked the open plan kitchen/dining/sitting area which opened out onto the pool and patio. Although it was too cold to swim when we were there (late September) the pool looked so inviting and was kept very clean.
The beds were very comfortable as were the pillows. Something so rare in France and Italy these days we tend to take our own. Not needed here.
The garden was a joy, and so enjoyed sitting in the little "private area" with the view across the valley.
The house was certainly very much home from home.
The local super market stocked everything we needed and I enjoyed walking down to the bakers every morning for our bread and croissant.
A brilliant holiday and looking forward to re-visiting.
