About this property

Lovely spacious property, fine pool & grounds. This villa is in a rural setting.

La Florette is a large house on the edge of the little village of Floure, about 6 miles to the east of Carcassonne. It accommodates 10 people plus baby in 2 double bedrooms and 3 twin bedrooms. It has bags of space inside and out, and is ideal for children. Its large swimming pool, exclusive to you, is a veritable sun trap. The house is about 100 yards from the River Aude.

You drive from the road down a small lane which takes you to the main gate. This is lockable to prevent children wandering down to the river. You park your car in the wide driveway.

Ground floor.
The ground floor comprises the large living room, the separate dining room, the kitchen, one of the double bedrooms, and a small toilet.

The living room has comfortable seating and nice décor. Windows face south over the terrace. The television receives UK programmes. There is a dvd player and several dvds; also a radio/cassette with many cassettes. There are hundreds of books in English. One door leads into the corridor, the other into the separate dining-room.

You will have wi-fi, internet access.

Kitchen/dining.
The table in the separate dining-room seats 10 people with ease. Its proximity to the kitchen makes serving and clearing-up very easy. Porte-fenêtres open onto the front terrace. Another door leads to the kitchen.

The kitchen is well equipped and very ‘workable’. It has a four-plate Stoves electric cooker, double sink, ample work-surface and cupboard space, large fridge freezer (there is a box freezer upstairs), dish-washer, washing-machine, and all the necessary equipment and utensils – kettle, toaster, microwave…. A door leads out onto the back garden.

Bedrooms.
The double bedroom on the ground floor is the largest in the house. It is well suited to anyone with mobility difficulties. Its windows look towards the back garden. There is a wc and wash basin on the other side of the corridor, very convenient for this bedroom.

The stairs to the first floor are easily negotiable and safe. The floor comprises a long corridor with 3 twin bedrooms to the left, and to the right the second double bedroom, a washroom, a separate wc, and the main bathroom. The 3 twin bedrooms are spacious with good wardrobe and drawer space. They look south over the lawn towards the Corbières Hills. The double bedroom on this floor has en suite shower and washbasin. It looks over the back garden towards the river.

All the bedrooms are roomy with good wardrobe and drawer space. We provide sheets, pillow cases and towels without charge, asking you to bring your own towels for sunbathing or the beach. There is one cot. We suggest that you bring your own cot sheets. There is a highchair and a pushchair.

The main bathroom has a shower, bath, bidet and wash basin. The wash-room has a shower, wc and wash basin. There is a separate wc next door. These rooms look north over the garden towards the river.

Garden and swimming pool.
The broad front terrace is south-facing and looks towards the lawn. There is ample seating, with overhead lighting in the evenings. At the far end of the terrace is the outside dining area under a pergola with overhead lighting. There is one barbecue in this dining area and another on the back garden patio.

The lawn is surrounded by varied trees and bushes. You will notice the large oleander, the young albizzia and the pampas amongst others plants. There is a double swing in the lawn. Beyond the lawn is the large open field, for ball games or children’s play. In one corner of the field is the swimming pool.

The swimming pool is 5x11 metres. You are out of your depth at the deep end. In one corner is the separate paddling pool, a delightful feature. Water cascades from the paddling pool into the shallow end. The paddling pool is easily supervised. The broad patio will be decked with chairs and tables, a hammock, loungers, a swing etc. The patio is a veritable suntrap, being very sheltered. It is entered by a child-proof doorway and is surrounded by walls or fencing and colourful shrubs and bushes.

La Florette is one part, the biggest part, of a long building divided into three houses. The middle house we keep for ourselves, but we shall not be there during your stay. The smallest house at the other end from yours is Chez Magali. It may be let, but it faces the opposite direction and has its own parking lot and patio. You will probably never set eyes on the people there and you will be caused no disturbance. The arrangement is good for security, however – an important consideration.

Hundreds of books in English, again to suit all tastes. Many of the books are in large print. We know that some families have spent virtually their entire fortnight by the swimming pool - not surprising given its special paddling-pool, its privacy and its verdant surroundings. Beyond the pool is a large field for ball games. There is a double swing on the lawn. The villageois of Floure have their various fetes from time to time. Our visitors have always felt welcome when they have gone across and joined the fun.

Visitor suitability

The entrance to La Florette is virtually flat, as are the grounds back and front. The stairs leading from the ground to the first floor are broad and quite shallow - not steep. You have a stout hand-rail. The internal doorways are not wide enough for a wheel chair, but the porte-fenetres leading out onto the front terrace are wide and easily manageable.

The ground floor bedroom with wc nearby may be suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties.

Children are especially welcome.

Why this location? We chose Floure for several reasons. It is close to Carcassonne, one of Europe’s most spectacular landmarks and a great centre for cultural, sporting, shopping and leisure activities. Floure is close to the Canal du Midi where you can take boat trips or simply walk or cycle along the tow-path. Motorway access to the coast or Toulouse is only 3 miles away. To the north you have the Montagne Noire and the Corbières hills to the south, with the Minervois plain in between. And you have beautiful weather.
Unique benefits of property La Florette has lots of space inside and out, ideal for children. Its perimeter is secure. The house is 100 yards from the river Aude. You have a large swimming-pool, exclusive to you, with a lovely paddling-pool cascading into it. There is a big open field for ball games. Your wide front terrace has plenty of sunshine and plenty of light shade. You can barbecue at your outside dining area under lights.

Inside, you have comfort and fine décor, a convenient well-equipped kitchen, a large living-room with wi-fi, internet access and a television receiving UK television programmes, five spacious bedrooms. A welcoming, relaxing environment.

The Owner Recommends

Places to visit within easy distance.

Access to La Florette is very easy by air and road. Carcassonne airport is about 10 miles away, mainly by autoroute. Access to the autoroute is 3 miles away beyond Trèbes. From there, it is a quick easy drive to the coastal resorts, Gruissan, Narbonne Plage and others, or to Toulouse in the other direction. Floure offers little except a magnificent château hotel/restaurant. Trèbes, 2 miles away, has all the shops, banks, tourist office etc. that you will need. It has a row of nice restaurants along the canal side. For a wider range of shops you will need to go to Carcassonne ‘new town’.

Carcassonne is a ‘must see’, Europe’s largest medieval fortified city with its moat, basilica, walls, turrets, fortifications, castle…. There is plenty to entertain children in the old Cité. There are really good restaurants in both old and new towns. Our travel journal will help here.

The Canal du Midi passes Marseillette, a couple of miles away. It is very pleasant to walk or cycle along the tow-path. Alternatively, you can take a boat trip from Trèbes or (probably) from Bram, Carcassonne or Homps. Very nice to take your hamper and chilled white wine with you. It is just possible that there are places where you can hire a boat for yourselves, but these can be hard to find.

To the south are the Corbières hills, wild country well worth exploring. To your north is the Montagne Noire where you can drive to the top along narrow roads. There are wondrous caves on your slopes of the Montagne Noire. Trèbes offers some sports facilities, but for the majority you need to go to Carcassonne. The variety of entertainments not far away include wine tours, horse-riding, water sports. It is wonderful cycling country. The Minervois has many little villages, each with its own distinctive features.

The 'local info' page on www.laflorette.iowners.net lists places to see within 50 miles.
