The local area is steeped in history. We are just 40 minutes drive from the UNESCO World Heritage site of Carcassonne with its' magnificent restored citadel. The surrounding area has many ruined Cathar castles in spectacular settings. There are also abbeys and spa towns to visit.
Each Monday morning the medieval centre of Mirepoix comes alive with the weekly market in the 2 old central squares. Local farmers, butchers and artisans come to sell their produce. The timbered arcades of the square have many restaurants with menus full of local specialities for you to try.
Our property is situated in the middle of the AOC Malepere wine region. The fields around are full of vines with many small producers in the local villages offering tastings and sales at the cellar door. The area is also famous for Blanquette de Limoux - the forerunner of champagne. This sparkling wine was first produced in 1531 using the traditional "methode champenoise". To start you off we provide you with a bottle of Blanquette de Limoux and a bottle of AOC Malpere free on arrival. We can arrange a half day wine tasting tour for you including a visit to a Blanquette producer. We do the driving - you do the drinking!
We are surrounded by walking trails. Just a few minutes walk from the house it is possible to access the GR7 with wonderful views of the countryside - fields full of sheep, horses, donkeys and cattle. On a clear day, the snow capped mountains of the Pyrenees are visible. If you prefer two wheels to two legs we can arrange bike hire (delivered direct to your door).
Dining options range from fine dining to the local take out pizza. Our favourites include Chateau Pennautier or A'kotee for a special meal out. For fun, cheap eats, Pizzeria Le Rol in Belveze du Razes has a great atmosphere where locals and visitors alike mingle.
Every year in July, the open air theatre in the citadel of Carcassonne hosts the Carcassonne Festival.
