About this property

An 18th Century Vineyard Worker's Cottage . This cottage/gite is in a village setting.

LISTED IN THE SUNDAY TIMES BEST 20 GITES IN FRANCE 2018
.'..sits at the heart of village life serving up southern France in all its glorious, sunlit simplicity. Antique bedsteads, window box geraniums and baguettes from round the corner are all part of the scene here. So, too, is a magnificent array of beaches & ancient monuments....' Sunday Times

Maison des Fleurs is an ancient 18th century artisan's stone cottage lovingly restored, using traditional methods & materials, complete with exposed beams, wood burning stove and sunny balcony where you can sit with a glass of wine and watch village life go by. Although an ancient cottage with charm and character it has all modern amenities, including wi-fi.

Maison des Fleurs is situated in the wine making village of Thezan des Corbieres only 16 miles from a wide selection of beaches and just 4 miles from a huge river where you can experience 'wild swimming'. The World Heritage Sites of Carcassonne & the Canal du Midi are just 28 & 13 miles away. It is the ideal holiday location and is available all year round.

Maison des Fleurs was built in the 1700's to house a vineyard worker and his family - this is a typical Landocienne terraced cottage. Land was used for cultivation, so houses for the workers were tiny, this is no exception - 55 square metres in total - but it once housed a family of 6. As this is such an old beamed property, some of the headspace is limited on the top floor. The house was derelict when purchased and has been lovingly renovated to emphasise original features such as ancient floor tiles, beams & niches. The original floor tiles were re-laid, beams restored and the walls re-built using traditional methods and materials. It is furnished with a mixture of charming French antiques and practical modern furniture and also has wi-fi.

Kitchen and dining

The entire ground floor is dedicated to cooking/dining. The kitchen area comprises a full size electric oven with a gas hob, microwave, expelair, fridge, sink, cupboards and shelving. Excellent quality cooking utensils are provided plus ample crockery and cutlery. The dining area is furnished with a dining table and chairs, a settee and a dresser full of travel guides for the area, cookery books and novels. All rooms have electric radiators.

A separate toilet and wash basin are on the ground floor.

Living rooms

The lounge is on the first floor and is decorated with lovely Brocante finds. French windows lead to a sunny little balcony, complete with table and chairs, just perfect for your morning croissants and coffee, or your evening glass of wine. The lounge has 2 comfortable settees, a table & a wall mounted dvd player. A large library of dvd's is provided and the wi-fi is situated in this room, but it extends to the whole cottage.

The lounge and the separate shower room (with wash basin) on this floor have electric radiators for the cooler weeks. A free standing fan is provided in the summer.

Bedrooms

Maison des Fleurs has a lovely, beamed double bedroom furnished with an antique French bed. There is also a single bedroom which, although it has an adult sized bed, is very small so is really only suitable for a child. Adults can use this room, however, and at no extra charge, but we prefer the house to have a maximum of 2 adults and a child (5 - 12 yrs) at a time unless by prior agreement. We welcome family dogs and, of course, children but the structure of the cottage means it is not suitable for children under the age of 5 years.

Bathrooms

The shower room and sink are on the middle floor - there is a continuous and generous supply of hot water. Soaps, shower gels, shampoo and towels are provided. Towels are also provided for beach/river swimming and are replenished whenever necessary.

On the ground floor is another sink and a toilet.

Heating

Electric wall radiators in all rooms

Garden and outside

There is a pretty, sunny balcony, leading from the lounge, complete with table and chairs - its a lovely place to sit and watch village life.

Parking and garages

Guests park in the village Place which is 2 minutes walk from the cottage. Here you can park under the trees and keep your car cool, very valuable in the heat. We have never had a problem with people parking there, this is a safe and quiet and friendly little village.

Visitor suitability

The village is a quiet but has all the amenities you could want. It is ideally situated but you must have a car, or at least bikes (and be experienced cyclists), in order to explore the region. There is no public transport. The area has so many attractions it is suitable for most - there are water parks and amusement parks nearby and even a wild life park, children have a wonderful time here. The cottage is unfortunately not suitable for those with disabilities as it has 2 flights of stairs (very shallow, not steep) and the toilet in on the ground floor. We do not accept children under the age of 5 as the structure of the building is not suitable.

Dogs are very welcome but please do liaise with us before booking.
