After enjoying holidays in the area, my wife and I bought the apartment about 10 years ago and have enjoyed spending relaxing holidays here every year since. We have our own business here in the UK so it is good to get completely away now and again and just chill out. Because the apartment is in a rural location, we can totally relax, unwind and get away from "UK plc".
|Year property purchased||2009|
|Why this location?||This is a very quiet, unspoilt and rustic area of southern France dominated by the Canal du Midi (which is only a few hundred metres away) and apparently gets over 300 days of sunshine a year. The apartment is on a complex set in 5 hectares of grounds originally belonging to the neighbouring 18th century chateau. We are surrounded by vineyards so it is very quiet (other than the birds) yet it is less than 20kms from the A61 motorway and only 12kms from the nearest railway station at Lezignan Corbieres, whilst Carcassonne airport is about 40 minutes' drive. Mediterranean beaches are less than 1 hour's drive away as are the Black Mountains to the north, whilst the Pyrenees are about 2 hours' drive to the south.|
|Unique benefits of property||The apartment is on the ground floor with a small patio/garden which faces east so is ideal to enjoy breakfast outside. The large living room has a well equipped kitchenette. The main bedroom is a good size plus there is a small "cabin room" which can sleep up to 2 children (aged 5 -12 years). The bathroom has a bath with shower over and basin, plus there is a separate toilet. In the communal grounds outside is a large swimming pool with children’s paddling pool, both surrounded by a large sun terrace. There is also a designated bbq area, woodland walks and plenty of open spaces.|
Snack bar/bar situated beside the Canal du Midi in the village of Homps, a village about 2kms away. They make terrific pizzas from scratch as well as other simple dishes at very reasonable prices. We have been going there regularly for years.
Olonzac Market is on every Tuesday and is very popular - selling a variety of local produce, clothing, jewellery etc. Other markets in the area include St Chinian on Thursday and Sunday mornings (roughly 40 minutes' drive away) and in the city of Narbonne there is a large indoor market everyday (just over 30 minutes' drive away).
For walking or cycling this is a very relaxing way to spend time in the area. It is very easy going as no hills are involved. There are locks within walking/cycling distance of the apartment and it can be entertaining to watch novice boaters try to enter and exit the locks! Circular routes can be undertaken by taking quiet country lanes as well as the canal side paths. Some lock keepers have stalls selling produce, ice creams, drinks etc to passing boaters, walkers and cyclists. Most villages alongside the canal have cafes for refreshments which are always welcome, particularly if the weather is especially warm!
About 30 minutes' drive to the east of the apartment is the very pretty village of Le Somail, which has several cafes, restaurants, galleries and other attractions, all beside the canal. There are also several historical buildings there too.
For a day out, about 1.5 hours' drive to the northwest is the town of Revel which has a very pretty medieval square surrounding an old covered market. It is a very relaxing place to sit outside and eat or drink at one of the many cafes and restaurants. Just to the southeast of Revel is the small town of St Ferreol where there is a large reservoir that can be walked around. It is this reservoir which feeds the Canal du Midi.
The remains of these ruined castles are often situated in quite spectacular settings. They are to the south of the apartment but north of the Pyrenees.
Although very popular and busy with tourists, the medieval castle is a must when visiting the area! Again this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
About 40 minutes' drive away are Narbonne Plage, Gruissan Plage and Valras Plage. Slightly further down the coast towards Perpignan is La Franquie where there are opportunities to try a variety of water sports, or up the coast are St Pierre la Mer and Cap D'Agde. All are lovely beaches but can be busy during the summer months
Just south of Narbonne on the edge of a large Etang (saltwater lake) is the small community of Bages. Here you can walk out on wooden walkways over the water and are likely to see flamingos as well as other wildlife.
The apartment is situated in the Minervois wine area with the Corbierres area just over the hills to the south. We are surrounded by vineyards so there are lots of "caves" locally where you can taste and buy their own wine. On the south bank of the Canal du Midi In the neighbouring village of Homps is Le Chai, a large shop offering wines from all around the region.
