About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Adam George

We are a family of 5 based in North Devon UK who love the outdoors and rural areas. The villa has been a great asset use as a family because of its beautiful location, swimming pool and great food and wine in the area. We also love exploring, and the trips to Spain or into the mountains using the villa as a base has given the children great experiences of other cultures and areas.

Year property purchased 2006
Why this location? Durban Corbieres is in the well known Languedoc wine region of France and is set in a hilly area with beautiful views and marked walking routes. In Durban Corbieres there is a Cathar Castle on the hill in the old part of the village.

The small river runs through the middle of the village - separating the old from the new. There are several local wine and honey producers from whom you can buy local produce. The region does have a Spanish influence both in language and cuisine. There are festivals in Durban and the surrounding villages in August and before Christmas.

Younger visitors - there is a wild life park at Sigean (20 mins) and aqua sports on the Mediterranean coast ( Le Franqui beach 25 mins).

For the adventurous there is water skiing, wakeboarding and other water sports at a number of the coastal resorts, or skiing, white water rafting, canyoning etc in the Pyrenees as well as many thermal spas.

Cycling is very popular here also - due to the lovely winding roads.

The Owner Recommends

Narbonne

About 30 minutes from the villa. A lovely old town with lots of cafes and places to eat with a lovely canal running through. There are regular outdoor markets here, and a permanent indoor food market called Les Halles which is absolutely amazing for all types of food as well as tapas bars and restaurants. You can take a boat trip down the river, wonder around the boutique shops or visit the old Cathedral. There are also the beautiful beaches of Narbonne just outside of town.

Abbaye de Fontfroide

Fontfroide Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery in France, situated 15 kilometers south-west of Narbonne near to the Spanish border. It was founded in 1093 by Aimery I, Viscount of Narbonne, but remained poor and obscure, and needed to be refounded by Ermengarde, Viscountess of Narbonne.

Château de Peyrepertuse

Peyrepertuse is a ruined fortress and one of the so-called Cathar castles located high in the French Pyrénées in the commune of Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse, in the Aude département, and has been associated with the Counts of Narbonne and Barcelona. It is about 30 minutes from the villa and has stunning views.

Carcassonne

The Cité de Carcassonne is a medieval citadel located in the French city of Carcassonne, in the department of Aude, Occitanie region. It is located on a hill on the right bank of the River Aude, in the south-east part of the city proper. It is about 45 minutes from the villa.

Les Halles de Narbonne

This is an indoor market in the centre of Narbonne. Fresh fish, meat, vegetables and fruit available in lovely settings. Nice tapas bars and coffee shops too.

Collioure

Collioure is a beautiful town on the Mediterranean coast of southern France. On the sea, the medieval Château Royal de Collioure offers dramatic coastal views. The bell tower of 17th-century Notre-Dame-des-Anges Church was once a lighthouse. The Modern Art Museum includes paintings by Henri Matisse. Nearby is the Moulin de Collioure, a 14th-century windmill. South, the hilltop Fort St. Elme has a museum with medieval weapons. About 1h 25 mins from the villa close to the border with Spain. Also has fantastic fish restaurants - can get very busy during school holidays, but arriving early helps and once parked easy to walk around.
