Discovery, Outdoors and Nature
Rambling, local heritage, discovery. If you are an outdoors enthusiast or are hoping to get closer to nature, you will be seduced by the numerous activities available in the area.

The Gîtes of the Filature are nestled in the typical Cévenol village of l’Estréchure, in the heart of the beautiful, wild and preserved environment of the Cévennes National Park.

In June 2011 the Cévennes National Park was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural landscape formed over millenia by man’s practice of agro-pastoralism. Lovers of nature and outstanding landscapes will be delighted by the chestnut groves, coniferous and oak forests layering the landscape. Crossed and ravined by babbling brooks with gushing rivers forming deep valleys, the landscape is both luminous and deeply shadowed at the same time. The Park is renowned for its unspoilt habitats, flora and fauna.

At the Gîtes of the Filature you are promised a holiday where you will benefit from the warmth and laid back atmosphere of the South of France. Due to its position in the heart of the Cévennes, you will enjoy the sunny climate but with tolerable mountain summer temperatures: a perfect restorative setting for relaxation.

The 4 gîtes that make up the Filature offer an ideal destination for those who wish to holiday with family or friends and to discover a dynamic region with remarkable rural heritage.

“Our ambition: to offer you, no matter what the season, a relaxing and fascinating holiday with the opportunity to explore a range of recreational activities”

Come and relax in this imposing house with a rich past, composed of 4 gîtes (spacious apartments of 68 – 88 m²) for between 4 and 6/8 people which are both comfortable and independent.
In addition, La Filature offers :
A large salt water swimming pool (heated in season)
Enjoy the beautiful swimming pool and sunbathing area, furnished for your comfort and relaxation. Numerous sunloungers are at your disposal so you can make the most of the fabulous Mediterranean climate. The swimming pool is not chlorinated: we use a salt system for water hygiene which does not irritate the eyes nor stain your swimming costume as chlorine may. In summer the children will be able to enjoy playing with various inflatable toys. Armbands are available for your little ones to use and if you like, you can bring your own water games.

Flowery and shaded garden
The garden of the Filature is a charming little corner for rest and relaxation where holidaymakers love to hang out in the daytime and share fun moments in the evening around the barbecues. The garden is perfect for relaxing and rediscovering oneself and enjoying the « joie de vivre » of the South of France!

A huge gamesroom
All our guests love this spacious area equipped with pool, table football and ping pong. We are dedicated to your amusement and relaxation. You can take the opportunity to sit around a table and share a game of cards or play board games! Everything is provided for you to make the most of your activity time.

River bathing a short walk away
There is a beautiful bathing area only a short walk away from the Filature, in the Gardon River, offering idyllic spots where crystal clear water cascades down the rocky riverbed. Nearby you can enjoy canoeing/kayaking, canyoning and if you are lucky spot the local beavers who live here.

And in the village …
A bakery/general store where you can buy Nathaniel’s famous almond tuile biscuits.
A restaurant-bar open at lunch and dinner time, in the summer season and in the evening every weekend (off-season). The auberge serves locally inspired cuisine at a very affordable price or you can stop off to share a beer or wine in their vine covered trellised garden.
A post office open every morning weekdays.
A painter who has a studio in the village and offers remarkable studies of the Cévennes.

The Cévennes: Silk Country
In the 13th century throughout Languedoc and particularly in the Cévennes, nearly every family « educated » silk worms (a bizarre word used to explain silk worm rearing in the Cévennes) and prepared the silk thread. The raw silk was then sold to traders. The weaving of the silk was carried out in the towns further south in the plains.
Silk stockings from the Cévennes were even sent to dress the calves in the Royal Courts of Europe! The prosperity of silk production was at its height in the first half of the 19th century. Then the small silk mills and workshops were gradually replaced by more productive industrial units.
At the limits of the Cévennes, at Ganges, Le Vigan, at Anduze and even at Saint Jean du Gard, the preparation of silk thread played a more important role than silk farming.
The development of steampower opened the door to the industrialisation of silk transformation and weaving. Each day, hundreds of workers, in particular working women and children, streamed into the Cevenol towns and villages to work in the silk mills.
Women made up the majority in many silk mills as they had been since the beginning of the adventure in the raising of silk cocoons. Great care was taken and prayers prayed that the egg would hatch and eventually become a cocoon.

The Filature Today
The Filature The People’s Silk Mill that we bought in June 2015, was founded in January 1910 as a villagers’ silk co-operative. It was inaugurated in the form of a Public Limited Company where the Board of Directors was elected. Shares worth 100 francs were issued, which people could acquire by either buying shares directly or by working in the construction of the mill.
At the same time, a fraternal benefit society was founded, embodying the modernity and the social importance of this innovative company.
The Filature used to provide silk for the Silk Company of Indo-China to where it was sent to make silk material. Activity diminished progressively, in particular around 1925 and 1942 and there were times when the entire silk worm production was devastated by a disease – La Pebrine. The opening of the Suez Canal, favourising the arrival of Chinese and Japanese silks, followed by competition by the development of rayon accelerated the decline of silk farming in the Cévennes.
By 1950 the Filature employed only about 40 workers and closed definitively in 1955.
From then on, local silk farming and manufacture regrouped around the Maison Rouge (Red House) in Saint Jean du Gard which was closed in January 1965, being the last French silk mill in activity.
The Filature building was then entirely remodelled and divided into separate apartments. The great bay windows were reduced in size and replaced with simple windows. An extra floor was added into the massive roofspace by dividing the workshop horizontally. The property nowadays sits at the exit of the village on the borders of Saumane.

In 1958, the old “Filature” was fully renovated and was divided into several apartments. Today, four of them are furnished and rented out as holiday gîtes.

Shared between the gîtes :
- Laundry room with washing machine;
- Gaming room (90 m2) with football, billiard and table tennis tables

In addition, each gîte has :
• Its own area in the garden for outdoor meals with a barbecue
• Television TNT (French)
• Free Wi-fi Internet acces

The gîte “Cévennes” : 88m² for 5 people

Situated on the second floor and arguably the best situation in the Filature. All the windows give onto the garden. Very quiet.
