Brian and Joan achieved their dream of living in France when they fell in love with this property over14 years ago. It reminded them so much of Brian's childhood home in Africa with its rocky landscapes and bright flowers. They have enjoyed caring for the land, creating gardens and welcoming visitors ever since.
|Year property purchased||2002|
|Why this location?||My wife Joan and I fell in love with this property on first sight. It reminds us so much of Africa, with its dry rocky landscapes, extensive views, and brightly coloured flowers.|
|Unique benefits of property||Utter peace and quiet.
Wonderful flora and fauna
Wonderful views
|
There is so much to see and do within the Languedoc, but don't forget to chill out at home too. Enjoy the scents of lavender, pine and wild herbs, while being alert to the butterflies, birds and other wild life around you, such as red squirrel, wild boar and at night the bats and owls.
It is hard to choose from the wealth of cities within 1 or 2 hour drive. For Roman remains visit Nimes, and don't forget the Pont du Gard just a little further on. For a magnificent fortified town visit Carcassonne, but much closer you will find La Couvertoirade (30 min) a Knights Templar village which still retains an air of mystery. Montpellier is an exciting and cultured city (leave your car and take the tram) Pezenas is also well worth a visit.
Lodeve, our nearest town, has a thriving museum and art gallery, with an annual summer exhibition. Visit the cathedral or just sit at one of the cafes in the town squares. There is a weekly market on Saturday mornings selling all sorts of things from local cheeses, fish and fruit, to baskets, olive wood bowls and pottery.
Within a 40 minute drive you will find the little fishing port of Meze with its seafood restaurants which line the harbour walls, and safe sandy beaches on the edge of the lagoon. There is also a thriving market in the town centre on Thursdays. A little further along the coast you will come to Bouzigues, where all the restaurants serve the locally produced oysters. Sete, just beyond, is a busy sea port with many restaurants and miles of sandy beaches, where you can collect beautiful shells.
A 30 minute drive north will bring you to the beautiful new viaduct which spans the Tarn Gorge at Millau. Don't forget to view it from below as well, it is amazing. You can take a river trip which passes beneath the towering pillars. A further extended drive through the spectacular Gorges du Tarn is highly recommended.
We had the pleasure of staying at La Primelle Chenes in May. We arrived late on a Saturday evening , beware the local supermarche is about 20 mins drive & closes at 7.30pm on saturday evenings .
It wasn't a huge problem as our lovely hosts stepped in and provided us with bread, cheese , croissants & wine which keep us going for the night.
The property is set in beautiful woodland , you are surrounded by wonderful bird song and stunning views, it is so peaceful.The owners give you directions for local walks to nearby villages,these are not to be missed!
The kitchen has everything you need and the terrace is wonderful for alfresco dinning.
The pool is not heated , I am sure this is a welcome cool down for the intense heat in June/July & August. It took a little more getting used to in may. All pools are legally obligated to have alarms fitted in in France, fantastic with 7 year old twins!
It would have been nice to be able to walk to local restaurants , you are in the middle of a forest.However,If you want to escape for a week or two this is your place. It is so lovely to be able to wake up to sunshine & beautiful scenery, you just switch off and relax.
We were delighted to see you make the most of our wonderful countryside, and to meet your happy family. Well done for braving the pool so early in the season.
