Hi, we are Dave and Linda. Now that our three daughters have flown the nest, we have decided to change our lifestyle. Linda has always taught French Spanish and German at secondary level and Dave was a water quality specialist in the UK water industry. We are now both freelance and are spending half our time in France and half in the UK.
|Year property purchased||2010|
|Why this location?||We have been visiting Languedoc regularly since 1990 due to a school exchange that Linda set up and ran with a French teacher in Beziers. It also became a favourite family holiday destination. During those 20 years we soon came to discover that this was a fantastic part of France, beautiful, quiet sandy beaches, magnificent mountains, clean rivers, great climate, friendly people and of course excellent food and wine!|
|Unique benefits of property||The overwhelming reason for us buying the property was location, location, location! The house has amazing open views across the vineyards to the valley and hills beyond. It is situated within the Regional Parc of the Haut Languedoc in a beautiful small hamlet but is only 10 minutes walk from the nearest village with tourist information office, shop, auberge, tabac, post office etc. It is only 5 minutes drive away from "one of the most beautiful villages in France" Olargues. You will be able to enjoy swimming in the private pool, canoeing and swimming in the local rivers, walking in the hillsides or the Gorge d'Heric, cycling (the old railway line along the valley is ideal for "softies") and wining and dining to your hearts content.|
You are in an ideal location here in Ornac!! It is situated in the Haut Languedoc National Park, between the mountains and the wonderful Mediterranean coastline, with its endless stretches of golden, child-friendly beaches. Children will love Abracadabranch Nature – a super tree top adventure playground/outward bound experience at la Pomerade just up the road from Ornac.
Make sure you include a visit to the neighbouring Gorges d’Heric, described by one writer as a “sabre slash between two mountain ranges”, the local authority landscaped a pathway to Heric in 1993, the 90 minute stroll is well worth the trouble and there is a café in Heric!
Nearby Olargues, is listed as “one of the prettiest villages in the whole of France”
The Route des Lacs in the mountains above Olargues/St Pons is stunning, take a drive and catch your own trout at Fraisse sur Agout. Just across the “blue bridge” at Tarrassac is a wonderful stretch of freshwater swimming in the River Orb, (take the turn for the campsite, park in the visitors car park and walk through the campsite). Alternatively, just after the turn for the “blue bridge” there is canoeing and kayaking etc. with snack bar at the edge of the water.
For golfers, there is an excellent course at Lamalou les Bains Golf Club. Also in Lamalou there are all weather tennis courts, a Casino and a Theatre, as well as, of course the thermal baths from which the town takes its name. No visit to the area is complete without a visit to the pretty village of Roquebrun, and its mediterranean garden. There are many Mediterranean beaches nearby- 40-45 minutes from the village. Valras Plage is more commercial and Serignan and Vendres Plage are less crowded. All offer long sandy stretches and shallow waters.
Other nearby places not to be missed! And a great day out!!!: Minerve, Béziers, Narbonne, Montpellier, the Canal du Midi, Cap d’Agde and its huge waterpark, the City of Carcassonne in the neighbouring Aude and the many Cathare castles.
Sandwiched between the St Chinian and Faugeres wine producing areas ,there are countless opportunities to taste and buy excellent local wine to suit all tastes and pockets. The vines adjacent to our property produce a good quality white wine which can be sampled just 5kms away. We are more than happy to arrange wine tasting tours to suit individual needs.
There are 2 good restaurants, a pizzaria and a snack bar in Mons la Trivalle, just 1km walk from our property. There are a number of other excellent eateries Olargues and Colombieres both 5km.
We had a chilled time at Mas du Serre. Hard to tear ourselves away from the comfortable Gite, with its beautiful views on to the hills and the joy of the very well-maintained, good-sized pool. Swimming before breakfast most days was a real treat, a great start to the day.
The house is well-equipped, homely and clean and the welcome pack really generous. One of the many thoughtful touches was the provision of a Michelin road map (disorganisedly we hadn’t brought appropriate maps) - saved many arguments with the SatNav, and great for those who love reading maps.
Dave and Linda were very welcoming and knowledgeable hosts. We wouldn't have walked around the old village of Mons without Dave’s suggestion or visited Pézenas without Linda’s. Both trips recommended.
We probably should have done more whilst we were here, it is such a beautiful area, but the lure of the pool and the seduction of the peace and privacy of this lovely place won out most times! We did manage to eat at the two restaurants in the village - about 10/15 minutes walk away along a quiet lane, over the river. Good food at both. Walking home under a star-lit sky was wonderful.
We were sad to leave and hope to return - still so much to see!
Thank you for your great review, we are so glad that you enjoyed your holiday at Mas du Serre. We look forward to your return visit, you are most welcome.

A fantastic, clean gite in a quiet, scenic mountain setting with some amazing activities close by. The gite has everything you need and more, with some thoughtful additions such as the sunhats. The table tennis was well utilised and breakfast on the patio each morning was a treat. We expressed an interest in being shown how to use the pizza oven but sadly this didn't materialise. The only issue for us was the location of the owners property which was right next to the gite, with their balcony area overlooking the pool and one of the windows to the main bedroom. This probably won't be a problem for most. Overall we had a great time in France, the gite and the owners contributed hugely to our enjoyment.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The gîte is modest in scale but ample in facility and in very good condition. The rear terrace and pool are a delight, and the view across the vineyard to the garrigue is magnificent. The hosts, who live next door, are cheerful and welcoming and always ready to help, and they are rightly proud of how impeccably clean the pool is! Local amenities are excellent: the local shop is unbelievably well stocked in comparison with most such places, and you are not very far from the perfect village of Olargues (dine at 'Fleurs d'Olargues'!). All in all - despite the best efforts of the excesses of the heatwave (which made us v grateful for the pool) - we had a fine time.
Thank you for your review, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday in Ornac and we hope that you will want to return. Best regards dave and Linda.
I think I can say that Mas du Serre is one of the most delightful properties we have ever stayed in.
The location is idyllic, the property is furnished to a high standard and well maintained. The owners Dave and Linda are so approachable and helpful.
It is amazing lying next to the pool looking over the vineyard to the Caroux Mountains, then as the day moves towards the evening preparing the Barbecue or the pizza oven (take Dave's advice and you will have the best pizza you have ever eaten). Then sit at a table that looks on to all of this....
Or you can take a walk towards Mons La Trivalle and eat in one of the two restaurants there which have such friendly staff and the food is fantastic.
There arespectacullar lakes nearby that you can visit and there are plenty of activities nearby that you can partake in and so many places to visit. We keep returning to this area of France and never tire of it.
You often read reviews and think, can it really be that good.... well it is!
Thank you for your review, we are so happy that you enjoyed your holiday in our our gite at mas du serre. It was a pleasure to have such a delightful family staying here, and we look forward to your return visit. Best regards Dave and Linda
