Hi, we are Dave and Linda. Now that our three daughters have flown the nest, we have decided to change our lifestyle. Linda has always taught French Spanish and German at secondary level and Dave was a water quality specialist in the UK water industry. We are now both freelance and are spending half our time in France and half in the UK.
|Year property purchased||2010|
|Why this location?||We have been visiting Languedoc regularly since 1990 due to a school exchange that Linda set up and ran with a French teacher in Beziers. It also became a favourite family holiday destination. During those 20 years we soon came to discover that this was a fantastic part of France, beautiful, quiet sandy beaches, magnificent mountains, clean rivers, great climate, friendly people and of course excellent food and wine!|
|Unique benefits of property||The overwhelming reason for us buying the property was location, location, location! The house has amazing open views across the vineyards to the valley and hills beyond. It is situated within the Regional Parc of the Haut Languedoc in a beautiful small hamlet but is only 10 minutes walk from the nearest village with tourist information office, shop, auberge, tabac, post office etc. It is only 5 minutes drive away from "one of the most beautiful villages in France" Olargues. You will be able to enjoy swimming in the private pool, canoeing and swimming in the local rivers, walking in the hillsides or the Gorge d'Heric, cycling (the old railway line along the valley is ideal for "softies") and wining and dining to your hearts content.|
You are in an ideal location here in Ornac!! It is situated in the Haut Languedoc National Park, between the mountains and the wonderful Mediterranean coastline, with its endless stretches of golden, child-friendly beaches. Children will love Abracadabranch Nature – a super tree top adventure playground/outward bound experience at la Pomerade just up the road from Ornac.
Make sure you include a visit to the neighbouring Gorges d’Heric, described by one writer as a “sabre slash between two mountain ranges”, the local authority landscaped a pathway to Heric in 1993, the 90 minute stroll is well worth the trouble and there is a café in Heric!
Nearby Olargues, is listed as “one of the prettiest villages in the whole of France”
The Route des Lacs in the mountains above Olargues/St Pons is stunning, take a drive and catch your own trout at Fraisse sur Agout. Just across the “blue bridge” at Tarrassac is a wonderful stretch of freshwater swimming in the River Orb, (take the turn for the campsite, park in the visitors car park and walk through the campsite). Alternatively, just after the turn for the “blue bridge” there is canoeing and kayaking etc. with snack bar at the edge of the water.
For golfers, there is an excellent course at Lamalou les Bains Golf Club. Also in Lamalou there are all weather tennis courts, a Casino and a Theatre, as well as, of course the thermal baths from which the town takes its name. No visit to the area is complete without a visit to the pretty village of Roquebrun, and its mediterranean garden.There are many Mediterranean beaches nearby- 40-45 minutes from the village. Valras Plage is more commercial and Serignan and Vendres Plage are less crowded. All offer long sandy stretches and shallow waters.
Other nearby places not to be missed! And a great day out!!!: Minerve, Béziers, Narbonne, Montpellier, the Canal du Midi, Cap d’Agde and its huge waterpark, the City of Carcassonne in the neighbouring Aude and the many Cathare castles.
Sandwiched between the St Chinian and Faugeres wine producing areas ,there are countless opportunities to taste and buy excellent local wine to suit all tastes and pockets. The vines adjacent to our property produce a good quality white wine which can be sampled just 5kms away. We are more than happy to arrange wine tasting tours to suit individual needs.
There are 2 good restaurants, a pizzaria and a snack bar in Mons la Trivalle, just 1km walk from our property. There are a number of other excellent eateries Olargues and Colombieres both 5km.
Comfortable home from home with welcoming, helpful hosts. Reliable wifi and English tv great for keeping in touch with the world at large and the family. Comfy beds, good linen and great pool.3 visits so far, and hopefully more to come in this stunning part of France.
This is the perfect get-away for so many reasons. Firstly, the gite is itself charming, well-equipped, comfortable and situated in an ideal position - a view across a vineyard to mountains and further views to dramatic and higher peaks to the rear. A vine-shaded patio leads out to a pool area with an outdoor kitchen with a wood fired oven (prefect for pizza) and a BBQ. The nearby village of Mons La Trivalle offers a truly well-stocked little shop cum deli AND a very good bar/restaurant both just 10 minutes walk away. Our hosts were friendly, accommodating and unobtrusive - but were really helpful with suggestions and directions for things to do nearby - for example, good vineyards for wine-tasting and delightful places to go river swimming. You can borrow bikes to cycle to the nearby markets or go white water canoeing about a mile away. The nearby Gorges d'Heric offers a great walk, with many other places to be explored on foot or by bicycle. So there's lots to do without getting in the car every day. My wife and I had a glorious time and we look forward to visiting again soon.
It's very difficult to fault this gite in any way. This was our third visit, which should say something! The only reason we gave 9s above for two categories is because it is in such a peaceful rural location. The comfort is fine but it's a gite and not a luxury apartment!
'Idyllic', 'paradise', well we think so. Quiet, fantastic views over the vineyard, birds and insects to watch from the outside dining table, even the odd garden dormouse. Ornac is a tiny hamlet, but the local village Mons La Trivalle is only 10-15 minutes walk away and has a bustling auberge and quirky epicerie. It is also a stopping point on the 'voie verte', an old railway line converted into a cycling/walking path (bikes provided at the gite).
Dave and Linda were perfect hosts, always ready to help with any problems, book a restaurant table or share views on local places of interest. Local cities such as Montpellier (well worth a visit) are closer than you think in terms of journey time, maybe 90 minutes. Even the arty fishing village of Collioure near the Spanish border is only about two and a half hours. Within an hour there are plenty of spectacular villages and towns like Olargues, Roquebrun, St Chinian, Beziers and Bedarieux (where you can still get a local train north to (say) Millau or south to Beziers.
If you still want to keep in touch with the outside world there is UK TV on satellite and wi-fi.
Thank you for your great review, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your third holiday in our Gite, and we look forward to your next holiday with us.
