About this property

A Very Large, Traditional and Elegant Apartment . This apartment is in a coastal setting.

Maison Barral is a large and grand “maison vigneronne” split into 3 floors:

The ground floor - garage for carparking and utility room with washing machines - formerly used by the vignerons for wine production and stabling the horses which pulled the winecarts, plus 2 large 15,000 litres cuvee (unused nowadays).
The first floor - "Apartment Spencer" (where the owners, Sara & Jeff live)
The second floor - "Apartment Barral."

Both apartments have their own private entrances and are accessed via a beautiful winding, but gentle stepped elegant staircase. Apartment Barral is 110 m2 / 1184 sq ft in area (so quite large) and historically, was bedroom accommodation for the family. In the past, most of the houses in the street were used for wine cultivation and production, but nowadays, like Maison Barral, are now family homes or apartments. There is a feeling of being part of the industry that created the wealth in Marseillan during its heyday and today.

Maison Barral is located just outside the ramparts of the beautiful medieval village of Marseillan and is conveniently located for easy level access to the village, port and town beach which are all within a 5-10 minute walk. As the apartment is on the top floor, it is bright and airy and the views from all the windows are far reaching across the village, church, the headland Saint Loup at Cap D’Agde and occassionally in the right light, the peak of Canigou in the Pyrenees.

The vigneronne was built around 1850 was owned by various wine cultivators in its history, but in recent history was the home of a famous local poet called Marcel Barral (1909–1997) who was born in Marseillan. Marcel was married to Josephine Bousquet (whose family originally owned the house for many years during the course of its history). He was a teacher, a primary school inspector and school inspector. He was stationed in Burkina Faso (at the time when it was called Upper Volta). He was also posted to Senegal and Egypt and under the nom de plume of "Marcel Viala". He published a collection entitled "Entre les quatre fleuves", (Between the four rivers), in memory of the Nile, the Niger River, the Sénégal River and the Congo River (rivers of black Africa, where he had spent a part of his life). Josephine and Marcel had a son called Henri and he then had two sons who still live in the area, called Antoine & Bruno. More recently Marcel's grandson Antoine, also an author, wrote of the cause and effects of the notorious political events of 1968.

Once you reach the 2nd floor, you are faced with Art Deco glass doors and windows which enters into a spacious entrance hall. Immediately one has a feeling of being “on the top of the world”, and sharing a part of history in this elegant house. All the floors are laid with original antique, ornate, colourful and traditional Montpellier tiles. Leading off the entrance hall is a large double bedroom, a large twin bedroom, a spacious bathroom and vast kitchen and separate sitting room. The apartment measures just over 110m2 and was formerly used as the bedrooms of this impressive old house dating back to about 1850.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Sara Spencer

We are Sara and Jeff Spencer and we look forward to welcoming you to Apartment Barral. I am an artist and Jeff is a retired stock broker have been living in the southern part of France since 2001. Initially we lived an hour south of Toulouse in the Ariege department, but fell in love with Marseillan whilst on holiday in the town in 2006 and eventually moved here in 2014. We renovated Maison Barral (the Maison de Maitre/Vigneron) with new ceilings, electric wiring and plumbing in 2015.

Year property purchased 2014
Why this location? We chose this location firstly because of its proximity to the Mediterranean and for its warm and dry climate, but also for the fabulous seafood which is produced locally in the Etang de Thau, a seawater lagoon that Marseillan is located upon, plus the delicious and fantastic wines produced around the town and the Languedoc (Domaine Madeleine, Richemer as well as the vermouth producer Noilly Prat). As an artist the ever changing colours of the land (vineyards and fields), the light and the lagoon and sea also inspire me. Marseillan is a wonderful town boasting many bars, restaurants and good local amenities and it is an all year holiday location with many cultural events occurring throughout the year. We are lucky to be located in an area with many airports, the nearest being Beziers, only 25 minutes drive or all year bus service via Agde to the town. The other nearest is Montpellier, then others, Carcassonne, Nimes and Perpignan.

The Owner Recommends

La Maison Noilly Prat

You can tour the home and headquarters of this vermouth producing company and learn about the history of how and why Noilly Prat has served through its history from 1813. After each tour there is a tasting for participants of the tour. It is also possible to eat or have a Noilly Prat cocktail in the beautiful courtyard or in the bar.

Kithau

A small entreprise by the Etang de Thau in the Park Tabarka next to the Port. They specialise in wakeboarding, ski nautique, paddle boarding and kayaking. There is also a small bar and sun deck for those watching the sport. It is a fabulous location with gentle music for just taking in the beautiful views of the Etang over to Sete, enjoying a cold drink as the sun shines or sets.

L'Etoile de Thau

Boat trips from the Port of Marseillan which enter the Etang de Thau and show visitors how the oysters and mussels are cultivated. Very good tours with lots of information about the sea life in the Etang and much, much more.

Ranch la Camargue (Marseillan Plage)

Horse riding groups on Marseillan Plage and through vineyards - about 6 kms from Marseillan town.
