Fantastic restaurant and very good value. The Chef Natasha was trained by Marco Pierre White in London and her husband Olivia will make you very welcome and speaks very good English. Booking is necessary. They also do a lovely afternoon tea with home-made cakes and sandwiches and speciality teas.
An extremely large market is held on Wednesdays in summer. Lots of places for refreshments and ice-creams, where you can sit and watch the world go by.
Lovely scenic town with lots to offer. Large market held on Fridays and some lovely shops and restaurants right on the rivers edge.
The Benedictine Abbey on the river's edge is superb and this along with the old stone bridge, weir and pretty mill now turned into a splendid hotel and restaurant all make for a very photogenic scene.
Look inside the abbey as well (built by Charlemagne in 769 and the main historical highlight of the town) and at the troglodyte section behind the abbey including the famous cave of the 'Last Judgement'. These are the remains of the original abbey and during the summer you can do a night-time visit of the troglodyte section - very atmospheric.
Richard the Lionheart died at Chalus. There is a trail you can follow by car and visit the castle where he died.
On the 10th June 1944 the entire village was destroyed by the Nazi's and it has been preserved as it was at that time. 642 Men, Women and Children were killed.
Lots of shops and restaurants and architecture to view. Quaint little alleys to explore and the Railway station is well worth a visit for the architecture.
A beautiful Chateau much photographed and painted.
The area has lots of lakes which were caused by Meteorites falling and a trip to the Meteorite Museum is well worthwhile.

Wow, what a treat to stay somewhere that actually exceeds expectation. Kudos to Patsy and Stewart for their vision and their attention to detail. They have literally thought of everything. The gite is spectacular and is of a high specification throughout. It is clean, comfortable and extremely well equipped. The salt water pool is just fabulous, clean and temperate with lots of inflatables. There are also a large number of additional facilities provided including; a pool table, an air hockey table, dart board, games consoles and many toys inside. Plus badminton, table tennis, boules, a slide and swing set, archery, and giant connect 4 outside. Our children range from 15 to 6 and everyone was happy. So much so we barely felt the need to venture out though the area is lovely! Patsy and Stewart are friendly and helpful. We would have no hesitation in recommending Maison du Massaloux to anybody. It is just about perfect.
Just to note that there aren't any shops within walking distance though there are well stocked supermarkets about 15 minutes drive away.
This is a beautiful place to stay. The Gite is spacious and comfortable with wonderful en suite bathrooms. The finish on the tasteful decoration throughout the Gite is excellent - nothing looks tired or well-used - so it immediately feels like a home and not just a place to stay. The pool and landscaped gardens make for a delightful, relaxing outside space. Our four boys (aged between 11 and 17) enjoyed the pool, badminton on the lawn, boules and evenings in the games room! Patsy and Stewart are lovely, kind people who gave us ideas on places to visit and an insight into the French way of life. We would thoroughly recommend this as a place to stay in the Haute-Vienne!
I stayed at Maison du Massaloux in August 2017 with a friend and our families. We had two young children with us and the owners were fantastic, fitting out the property with stairgates, safety covers for the plug sockets and allowing the kids to play with their own grandchildren's toys!
The property was faultless, the kitchen equipped with everything that we needed and the outdoor space a real bonus - we struggled to get the kids out of the pool!
There was plenty to do in the surrounding area for families, however it was tempting just to stay in the beautiful garden and relax.
