Fantastic restaurant and very good value. The Chef Natasha was trained by Marco Pierre White in London and her husband Olivia will make you very welcome and speaks very good English. Booking is necessary. They also do a lovely afternoon tea with home-made cakes and sandwiches and speciality teas.
An extremely large market is held on Wednesdays in summer. Lots of places for refreshments and ice-creams, where you can sit and watch the world go by.
Lovely scenic town with lots to offer. Large market held on Fridays and some lovely shops and restaurants right on the rivers edge.
The Benedictine Abbey on the river's edge is superb and this along with the old stone bridge, weir and pretty mill now turned into a splendid hotel and restaurant all make for a very photogenic scene.
Look inside the abbey as well (built by Charlemagne in 769 and the main historical highlight of the town) and at the troglodyte section behind the abbey including the famous cave of the 'Last Judgement'. These are the remains of the original abbey and during the summer you can do a night-time visit of the troglodyte section - very atmospheric.
Richard the Lionheart died at Chalus. There is a trail you can follow by car and visit the castle where he died.
On the 10th June 1944 the entire village was destroyed by the Nazi's and it has been preserved as it was at that time. 642 Men, Women and Children were killed.
Lots of shops and restaurants and architecture to view. Quaint little alleys to explore and the Railway station is well worth a visit for the architecture.
A beautiful Chateau much photographed and painted.
The area has lots of lakes which were caused by Meteorites falling and a trip to the Meteorite Museum is well worthwhile.
The most monumental Gallo-Roman baths in France
On the borders of the Charente and Haute-Vienne, the site of Cassinomagus presents outstanding Gallo-Roman remains in a landscape of 25 hectares, you will discover including the best preserved and most monumental baths in France.
I stayed at Maison du Massaloux in August 2017 with a friend and our families. We had two young children with us and the owners were fantastic, fitting out the property with stairgates, safety covers for the plug sockets and allowing the kids to play with their own grandchildren's toys!
The property was faultless, the kitchen equipped with everything that we needed and the outdoor space a real bonus - we struggled to get the kids out of the pool!
There was plenty to do in the surrounding area for families, however it was tempting just to stay in the beautiful garden and relax.
