About this property

Charming Period Cottage Full of Nooks & Crannies. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

Delightful period cottage described by friends and visitors as a 'Hansel & Gretel' fairytale cottage full of beams, nooks, crannies and original character features.

During WW2 the cottage was a Resistance 'safe house'.

Close to the Vichy / Dordogne border this area was a hotbed of resistance during WW2 and our lovely elderly neighbour recalled stories of smuggling food to the fighters when she was a young girl.

A cache of arms was discovered secreted in a wall of the property during renovation works and were handed in to the authorities.

The cottage is nestled in the beautiful Limousin countryside of forests, lakes and chateaux yet close to all amenities including supermarkets and the stunning historic city of Limoges, birthplace of Renoir.

Renowned for fine porcelain, Limoges regularly hosts eclectic bustling antiques markets throughout the cobbled streets of the medieval city.

It is a delight to immerse in the atmosphere at the many street cafes whilst being entertained by talented buskers. The acoustic guitarist and young lady accordionist are magical.

The amazing history of this region ensures there is always somewhere incredible to visit or discover.
Trace the route of Richard the Lionheart, experience the emotive silence of the massacre village of Oradour sur Glane, visit the museums of the Resistance, take in an Art Gallery or wonder at the heavenly choir in stunning Limoges Cathedral.

The facilities for Culture, Tourism & Leisure are endless. Another 'must visit' is the huge Lake Vassiviere with it's beaches, water sports & marinas.

For everyday needs the chateau village of Coussac Bonneval with garage filling station, boulangeries, butchers, hairdressers, pharmacy, laposte, vival shop, garden centre, railway station, bars and restaurants is but a few minutes drive.

The larger historic towns of St Yrieix la Perche and Lubersac with major facilities are approx. 10-12 minutes drive.

Being close to the Dordogne & Correze borders, beautiful towns like Brantome & the horse racing spectacular at Pompadour are within an easy drive.

Limoges international airport with major airlines and low cost fares is approx. 40 minutes.

The mature landscaped gardens have become a haven for bird life with a huge variety of species jostling for position on the busy feeding table beneath our silver birch tree.

Bird lovers take note...we are on the migratory flight path for the common crane, passing high overhead in a vast delta formation.
Each spring many thousands of cranes head north towards the summer breeding grounds in Scandinavia and Russia, returning in the autumn to Spain and North Africa.
To view this migration has been described as one of the greatest spectacles in europe.

For astronomy...there is no light pollution here...just big clear starry nights.
For fishermen...there are many facilities in this region, known as the land of a thousand lakes.
For relaxation in the garden...bird song is normally the loudest noise.
