The Owner Recommends

Etang du Cheix

Etang du Cheix is situated just 10 minutes away and is a man made lake with a beach. Swimming is permitted in the lake at particular times of the year and according to any local restrictions. The beach is supervised during the months of July/August with a lifeguard. Overlooking this lake is a restaurant in addition to the numerous bbq and picnic areas. As with many beaches and picnic areas in France there are a handful of bbq's provided on a first come first served basis.

Fishing

Naturally the area is extremely popular with the keen fishermen amongst you as there are plenty of lakes to choose from. These range from private lakes which tend to stock a large and healthy supply of carp but usually book up very early, to public lakes where you can almost always find a spot stocked with a variety of fish.

Golf

For the avid golfer amongst you there are various golf courses within easy reach of the property. Golf de Borganeu is a 9-hole course which is around 1 hour away. Golf Club de la Janchere is a course that offers either 18 or 9 holes as well as a driving range. The 9 hole course is approved for French Federation competitions and is around 55 minutes away from the accommodation. Golf de la Porcelaine is an 18-hole course and also boasts picturesque views as well. This is around 50 minutes away.

La Souterraine

La Souterraine has many historical buildings one of which is the Notre Dame Church that was built around a Gallo-Roman crypt which was the origin of the town's name. The Church has examples of the evolution of different styles starting with the late Roman to early Gothic structures. This church is open to the public all year.

Local Indoor Pool and Sports Centre

Although you benefit from your own private pool, there is an indoor pool within walking distance as well as a sports centre.

Rivers and Beaches

Being within the region of Limousin, known as the land of a thousand lakes you truly are spoilt for choice when it comes to trips further away from the property as there are a variety of rivers and beaches that include a lot of watersports and pursuits within a 20 minute drive. Lake Chambon is a favourite and only around 25kms away which boast a variety of watersports and a water-slide.

Tour de Bridiers

There is a tower called the Tour de Bridiers, which for a long time was a forgotten historical monument but is now used every summer as a backdrop to a sound and light festival. It is surrounded by a keep and a medieval garden which is also open to the public all year round.

Very clean and comfortable, location great for getting around the area lots to do.
Stephen and family were always on hand if needed but respected our privacy. Great holiday had by all of us.

8.1 / 10 Bruce and Sandra 28 July, 2014

The gite is a converted barn near the farmhouse with a circular pool accessed by steps at one end and with views across fields to the town and we enjoyed a restful week with our daughter and son-in-law who made good use of the pool to cool off from sunbathing on the south facing terrace. Steve made a helpful but unobtrusive host even providing a larger BBQ at his own initiative. The beds were comfortable and everything clean. There was some distant noise from trains and traffic but of more interest was the work of a greater spotted woodpecker in the trees and the family of swallows

La Souterraine has plenty of supermarkets; the market on Thursday is small but larger on Saturday. We recommend a meal at Le Passe Muraille in town and a climb up the steep stairs to the top of the Porte de St Jean. Further afield across the pleasant rolling countryside the valley of the Creuse makes an impressive contrast.
