About this property

Rural Cottages with Shared Pool and all Mod Cons. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

Our 3 gîtes are side-by-side modernised stone cottages created from what was once the second farmhouse at 'Les Marronniers', and retain many period features, such as exposed timbers and stonework. Thick stone partition walls prevent noise passing between them. Each has a character of its own, but each is fully set up for comfortable family holiday living, including heating for off-season lets (but we have never used it between April and October).

Bed linen is provided within the rental, and changed weekly - or more often on request at a nominal charge of €10 per person. Please bring your own towels. A hairdryer is provided.

Gîte 1 has an open-plan kitchen leading to a sitting area and dining space ample for 4/5, tiled floors and under-floor heating. An open-tread wooden staircase leads to a double and a twin bedroom under the eaves. (A third single bed or a cot can fit in the twin without difficulty – please contact us if you want to bring an extra child at no additional cost).

Type

Cottage/Gite

Kitchen and dining

Each of the gîtes is fully equipped with a complete range of cleaning equipment, crockery, cutlery and glassware, cooking utensils, full-size oven and hob, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster and barbecue. (Washing machines have their own separate room in the nextdoor storage block, and are available free of charge.)

Gite 1 has an "American" style galley kitchen leading to the open plan dining and sitting areas.

Living rooms

Gite 1 has an open plan living room with comfortable seating for 5 people.

Bedrooms

Gite 1 - one double and one large twin bedroom. We can put an additional full-size single bed or a cot in the twin room if required, at no extra charge.

Bathrooms

Gite has a ground floor bathroom with shower, wc and washbasin.

Heating

Super efficient under-floor electric heating on the ground floor, electric radiators upstairs.

Entertainment

There is satellite tv (French and English) in each gite, dvd players, and free wi-fi broadband access everywhere. Our library contains hundreds of books (mostly in English!) and dvds suitable for all ages and tastes.

Garden and outside

Approximately 2 acres of lawned garden, extending on both sides of the gites - plenty of room for children to play and adults still to find a quiet spot. Each gite has its own screened off gravelled terrace/outside dining area.

Childrens swings and slide, and full-size trampoline.

Lots of bicycles in all sizes.

11 metre x 5 metre solar-heated swimming pool with surrounding fence for childrens safety - the gate is kept strictly locked except when under supervision by an adult swimmer. The pool is 2 metres deep and the deep end and 1 metre at the shallow end, with easy-entry steps and an air-bubble seat at the shallow end. There is a 1 metre deep safety ledge all around the edge. Paddling pool also available for toddlers.

A large barn containing the games room and our private storage area.

A 5-acre meadow with a stream running through it - teeming with wild life. Children's access is restricted to under adult supervision.

Parking and garages

Gravelled parking area close to the gites for up to 6 cars. Additional parking available behind the barn if needed for visiting friends.

Visitor suitability

Suitable for all ages, especially families with children.
We can provide cots, highchairs, babybaths, playpen, etc. at no extra charge.
Because our gites are conversions of old farm buildings, they are unfortunately not suitable for those unable to climb stairs.
A car is necessary - hire cars available nearby at 6km, 16km and also at Limoges airport.

Information about any additional facilities

We have a well equipped 7 metre by 7 metre dedicated art studio, converted from what used to be the village laundry. You are free to use this any time the creative urge strikes you! (Children under supervision, please).

Make sure you sit out at night - the low light pollution affords a fascinating panorama of stars - they don't call this 'the forgotten France' for nothing; the Creuse is one of the most uncrowded parts of the whole country.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Chris Richards

We are Chris and Susie, a lively couple in our 60s. We like nothing better than to surround ourselves with family and friends, and that is exactly how we like to treat our guests - around to help when needed, and discretely out of your way when you prefer some privacy. At Les Marronniers we provide the setting for the kind of holidays we enjoyed the most when our own family were growing up. We speak French and English, and know the local area very well.

Year property purchased 2005
Why this location? We are based in the beautiful rural Creuse département (23) of the Limousin region, close to the borders of Indre (36) and Haute-Vienne (87). All three départements contain a wealth of attractions for every taste, from the simple pleasures of quiet country life to the lively nightlife and student scene in the regional capital, Limoges.

Within a very short distance, you will find breathtaking scenery along the banks of the River Creuse; cultural sites with strong local connections to George Sand, Chopin, Monet, Guillaumin and the other impressionists; historical towns, chateaus, ancient churches, and fortifications dating back to the days of the crusaders and even earlier; tennis, water-sports, fishing, horse-riding, nature walks, and farm visits; lake-side restaurants and bars, outdoor cafes, gourmet auberges, and even a "cottage pub".
Unique benefits of property Our three separate gites can accommodate 4, 5, and up to 8 people, so you can have a delightful private space for a small family, or cater for a big occasion for up to 17. Ours is the only self-catering holiday property in the local area that has it all - a big open garden, large heated swimming pool, games room, library, art studio, children's play area, bicycles of all sizes, free WiFi throughout, French and English TV - some of our guests are so content on site that we almost have to persuade them to go out and visit the many nearby attractions such as Lake Chambon with its excellent water-sports facilities, the beautiful Rivers Creuse and Sedelle much loved by the early impressionists, the fascinating castle ruins at Crozant, and the many ancient medieval settlements within a short drive. The lovely city of Limoges is less than an hour away, and has a fascinating history as a porcelain centre dating from Roman times right through to its important role in the war-time resistance.

The Owner Recommends

Auberge de la Vallee at Crozant

Sebastian Proux, chef and owner of the auberge, serves Michelin star standard cuisine at small-town prices.

Auberge de Thenay at St. Gautier

Delicious spit-roasts over an elaborate mechanical "tourne-broche", plus a huge selection of whiskies.

Auberge des Pecheurs at La Celle Dunoise

A lively Irish-owned bar situated on a scenic stretch of the River Creuse, with frequent music evenings and other events.

Pub le Cottage at Chantome

An intriguing mixture of an English pub and a French bistro. Very relaxed and friendly, children welcome, and it's 3 minutes away by car - 20 minutes on a bike! If you "accidentally" have one too many, Freddy will drive you home to Les Marronniers and we'll go and pick up your car in the morning.

Chez Aurore in Eguzon

Home-made pizzas - fast, cheap, and delicious. Perfect for a tired family on the evening of your arrival.

Lac Chambon

Just 5 km away - excellent water-sports facilities and a safe sandy beach with cafes.

Castle Ruins at Crozant

The huge 12th century castle at Crozant, once home to Isabelle of Angouleme (wife of England's bad King John), unfortunately fell down after an earthquake in 1604. But the commune has restored enough for a very interesting visit, scrambling over and through the ruins with an electronic guide tablet - in English if you like - including a fun children's "search" game.

Chateau de Sarzay

Nearly an hour away, but worth the journey. This rather mad medieval castle with its lofty towers is still more or less intact, and crammed full of all sorts of antiques, weapons, etc.
It's supposedly under restoration by its equally mad private owner, but we reckon it will take him another 300 years to finish the job. Keep a tight hold of the children, Health and Safety has never been heard of at Sarzay.

Our hosts Chris and Susie could not have been more accommodating . I was running a painting course and Chris had hired a minibus, devised a timetable and took us wherever we wanted to go.
The course was fully inclusive and we didn’t want for anything. The food Susie provided was ample and first class.
Unfortunately we had a few days of bad weather which meant working in the studio so we never got to swim in the very inviting pool.
As an artist, the area is fabulous to travel to with a group, all the best locations are within 10 - 30 minutes
