About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Christopher Brookes

​Myself and Chris, along with our two daughters aged 7 and 11 and our 6 rescue dogs relocated to France in May 2017 with the dream of running our own gîte business and having a simpler lifestyle. Originally from Jersey in the Channel Islands, our love of France set us on a journey which eventually brought us to Creuse, often referred to as the Lake District of France.

Why this location? Gite de la Borderie is situated in St Silvain sous Toulx a small quiet hamlet but within easy access to two large local villages (Boussac & Gouzon) offering all the amenities needed. The gite is also in easy reach of many lakes for swimming, water sports and fishing as well as many other historical, cultural and family attractions.

Superbly located just 12 minutes drive from either Gouzon or Boussac.

Boussac Château

Historically part of the Bas Berry, Boussac has always been a territory of confluence notably between the Auvergne, the Limousin and the Berry through its weekly markets. The Jean de Brosse Château is one of the major elements of local heritage. Guided tours, but also discovery walks around the fortress, allow visitors to discover, among other things, old Boussac thanks to its pedestrianised circuit. Walking trails leaving from Boussac (for walkers and mountain bikers) allow you to discover an unspoilt nature and an astonishing small-scale heritage

Toulx Ste Croix Panoramic Tower

The tower built at the initiative of Father Aguillaume, is located at the highest point of the mountain (655 m), at the location " Brûladis " at the site of the Gallic turn signals. It was finished building in 1957. From the top of the building which are arranged orientation marks, visitors will enjoy a panoramic view around 100 km spanning seven departments, and making it one of the best views of France.

Les Pierres Jaumâtres

A sacrificial altar, the Dieu du Tonnerre (God of Thunder) stones and those of La Guerre (the War), La Bascule (the Seesaw), Les Pains de sucre (the Sugar Loaves)… the Pierres Jaumâtres are a place of legends par excellence.At the summit of Mount Barlot, around 40 enormous granite blocks surge up and lean together at impossible angles.An amusing family outing to see, imagine, climb, touch… Careful though: the fairies are never far away. On 10 June 1944, the village of Oradour-sur-Glane in Haute-Vienne in Nazi-occupied France was destroyed, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. A new village was built nearby after the war, but French president Charles de Gaulle ordered the original maintained as a permanent memorial and museum.

Base nautique de Pouligny-Notre-Dame

Just south of Berry, the 3.5 hectare Ligny lake is equipped with a water ski lift. Unique in the Centre region, this equipment which works like a buttock, allows amateurs and lovers of sensations, to slide on the water by staying on a surfboard while being connected to a cable. In addition to the water ski lift, you can discover a BMX leisure track, disc golf, various games (outdoor ping-pong tables, badminton court, bowls and games for children) and a beach.

Château de Culan

Dating from 1180, the castle of Culan still stands today its proud silhouette hanging from the rock overlooking the Arnon. It is a real castle which unfolds its 80 meters long façade, punctuated by powerful round towers crowned with wooden hoardings, unique in France. This seigniorial dwelling was the property of Minister Sully and the Prince de Condé. He received visits from famous people, including Joan of Arc, Louis XI, the Marquise de Sévigné, George Sand and Chopin. At the foot of the castle, various gardens of medieval inspiration combine aromatic, medicinal and ornamental plants, as well as a rose garden.

Bison Park

Bison’s of the Wild West, free range in a 50-hectare park. The bison almost disappeared in the 19th century. Several enthusiasts saved the species and around 40 found refuge in the Creuse in 2001.Guided visits in a 4x4.

Vélo-Rail de La Mine

an old railway line formerly dedicated to transporting passengers and coal from the Bosmoreau mines.
Treat yourself to a sportive and family walk on a 10 km round trip in the middle of a preserved nature. Enjoy the coolness along the valley of the Thaurion while observing the ruins of an ancient abbey, horses grazing quietly and why not other unusual animals..... The journey ends on a panoramic view of the towers of the castle of Bourganeuf. All you have to do now is to turn around with the help of the "turner" to come and enjoy a cold drink served on the terrace of the arrival station, which has kept its original 1883 setting.

Panoramique des Domes

Take a ride on the Panoramique des Dômes train to the summit of the Puy de Dôme volcano. A fun and unique way to discover the Chaine des Puys and the volcanoes of Auvergne!
Peaking at 1485 m, the Puy de Dôme is the tallest point of the Chaine des Puys, a volcanic mountain range that counts no less than 80 volcanoes aligned north to south over 30 km. To protect this natural site, listed as a Grand Site de France, but also to give access to all, the summit can be reached year-round by an electric rack railway.

Fortess de Crozant

You must come and discover the ruins of the ancient fortress of Crozant. This site was one of the most powerful strongholds in France in the middle Ages. Today it remains the ruins of the towers of the 10th and 13th centuries, offering a magnificent panorama over the Creuse Valley, situated below. This picturesque site inspired many painters in the 19th and 20th centuries; among the most famous, Claude Monet, Armand Guillaumin... and gave his name to the School of Impressionist Painters of Crozant.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time here - what’s a lovely part of the world! Chris & his wife were so welcoming and helpful & importantly we could bring our dog! The gite was cosy, clean & had everything we needed & the beds were really comfy! We’ll definitely be back!
