There are three good places to eat in Vouvant. The Auberge which is at the bottom of the main street, set in a pretty little square. "Le Pic Vert" which is on the outskirts of the village and has a stunning location overlooking the river. The French Restaurant at the top of the main street which has a very good reputation and is voted within the top 5 restaurants in the Vendee.
In the nearby village of St Maurice de Noues there is a lovely clean and professionally run stable, with very friendly staff.
For a great day out visit this beautiful island with it's stunning harbours, beach and restaurants. It's across the bridge from La Rochelle. Take your bikes too!
The nearest market is at Fontenay-le-Compte. It is held on a Saturday. For more serious shopping a trip to La Rochelle is definitely to be recommended. It is a beautiful seaside city bursting with character, designer shops, good restaurants, museums, and many other attractions including it's famous Aquarium. It takes 1-1 and a half hours to get there. Leave early as it becomes very difficult to park at peak season and spend the whole day exploring or sitting outside a restaurant people watching.
Take a trip to Coulon and punt along the canals of "Green Venice". Treat yourself to a meal at the lovely "Le Central" restaurant, but be warned it is an expensive restaurant! Or alternatively travel to Maillezais where you can combine punting with a visit to the magnificant abbey and enjoy an al fresco meal at the restaurant on the banks of the canal where the punting begins. If you go on a Tuesday and stay until the evening you can even take in a light show!
There is an indoor swimming pool at Fontenay-le-compte, the nearest market town. Or why not try the lake at Mervent village, just a few kilometres from Vouvant. Here there is a water activity centre where it is possible to hire canoes, kayaks, electric boats and pedellos. There is also a restaurant overlooking the lake which serves food and drinks during the summer season.
There is an old fashioned theme park set within the forest between Vouvant and Mervent, which is great a day out with the kids. It is called the "Parc de Pierre Brune" there are rides such as the chairoplanes, bumper boats, bucking bronco, and other old fashioned favourites such as wobbly bikes, distorting mirrors, hampster wheels etc. There is even a small train which runs around the park.
It takes an hour to get to the coast, depending upon the traffic. The nearest beach is La Tranch Sur Mer. This has a sailing centre, kite surfing, long board and bodyboarding, skim boarding and surf boarding with plenty of watersports for children. There is also a really impressive indoor swimming pool in case the weather turns!
In Vouvant itself wander along the narrow streets between the pretty houses, discover the ramparts, the keep, and the Melusine tower nestling in the oxbow of the river Mere. Between Vouvant and Mervant explore the vast forest, take a picnic and visit the remarkable trees. Cycle to the lake or the zoo in Mervant. You could even cycle to Mervant's equivalent of "Go Ape"!
At nearby Pissotte, which also has a very good Creperie.
