Sue and I retired from teaching 9 years ago and now split our time between France for the summer months and the U.K for the football season! We also enjoy spending lots of time with our four grandchildren.
|Year property purchased||2003|
|Why this location?||We chose this location for its peacefulness and friendliness. The weather is usually pretty hot in summer and can get very cold in winter. We do like having proper seasons! We always say it is like England was 60 years ago.|
|Unique benefits of property||Le Four a Pain is set in an acre of land so there is plenty of space for the children to enjoy. We provide lots of opportunities for games with a trampoline, football goal, badminton court, basketball, snooker, darts, table football, swimming pool and of course the gym. The Gite has plenty of space with all the facilities you need for a restful holiday. The Berry region is also central so you are not far from the Dordogne and Central Loire valley (2 hrs) and Paris (3hrs).|
There are interesting and impressive chateaux at Sarzay, Culan, Ainay le Vieil, Meillant.
The writer George Sand's house at Nohant is worth a visit as are the early frescoes at the church in Vic.
Various canoeing and boating activities plus one of Europe's biggest treetop adventure courses. Large grassed area for picnic and a beach with bathing facilities.
Chateaumeillant and La Chatre have excellent restaurants and are worth a sightseeing visit. The village of St. Severe is the location of Jacques Tatti's film Jour de Fete and is a quaint destination with a medieval market hall, castle ruins and museum.
We have just returned from a lovely week at this property. We should say that in our opinion the photos on the website do not do this gite justice in any way! It is a beautifully renovated property in fantastic grounds with loads of space, lovely gardens, etc. It is furnished very comfortably, even lilos and rubber rings for the pool! They really have thought of everything! Unlike other rustic gites we have stayed in, this was spotlessly clean with great amenities. The couple who also own the gite next door gave us a warm welcome and had provided a generous breakfast pack - as well as two lovely bottles of wine. They were also a great source of information of things to do/places to see. This gite really is "in the middle of nowhere" and the nearest shops, restaurants etc are a good 20 minute drive away, albeit through beautiful Indre countryside. Highly recommended - a visit to the lake at Sidiailles where we had a gorgeous day relaxing and swimming. Also the Chateau at Sarzay, the small town of Chateaumeillant, Georges Sands' house and an absolute must is to watch the DVD in the gite of Jacque Tati's "Jour de Fete" followed by a visit to Sainte Severe - the village where it was filmed! All in all we had a lovely mixture of sightseeing and relaxation. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to escape from the noise and stresses of city life and who doesn't mind a bit of a drive!
Thank you so much for the review. We're glad you enjoyed your stay with us - we enjoyed your company too. You'd be welcome any time.
