Sophie was fortunate enough to live and work in Central & Eastern Europe and Sweden and enjoyed a career in Human Resources. Mark ran a company providing IT support to small companies and worked throughout the UK and Europe. We had the opportunity to follow our dream in 2015. We searched for a home in France and were lucky enough to find the old farm.
|Year property purchased||2016|
|Why this location?||One of the barns had already been converted in the 1970s and whilst it needed updating, it was habitable. We were able to move into the barn and concentrate on restoring the original farmhouse to create the gite.
There is a lot to do in the area and this attracted us to the property. The large, famous chateaux of the Loire are less than an hours drive away. But we prefer the smaller chateaux which are closer to us, such as Montresor and Valencay which are about 10-15 minutes drive away. There is also a steam train based in the village, and Beauval ZooParc is just a short drive away. The Brenne National Park is south of us and the bird watching is superb. The village is very well serviced with two boulangeries, a butcher, small supermarket, cash point, petrol station, pharmacy and a few restaurants.
|Unique benefits of property||The double height ceiling in the main salon shows off the original structure of the barn. We also love the oak staircase which was made for us by a local artisan. There is also lots of insulation in the property and underfloor heating throughout the ground floor. The en suite bathrooms are also well appointed with a large bath in one, a rainshower in the wetroom and a large shower cubicle in the upstairs en suite.|
Located just a 15 minute drive away, this is regarded as one of the top 10 zoos in the world. August 2017 saw the safe arrival of the first panda cub to be born in France and it is hoped to be on public viewing in October 2017.
The main depot for the Bas Berry Tourist Train is located in the village. They run regular steam and electric trains throughout the year.
Classified as a beautiful village with a delightful chateau at its heart. Lovely village with 2 restaurants, bar, shops and only 20 minutes drive away.
Beautiful chateau and gardens to visit. They regularly have events and exhibitions taking place. Also in the town is the monument to the Special Operations Executive members who served in World War II. The first British agent was dropped by parachute just outside the town.
A bustling town on the banks of the Loire river and just north of Beauval ZooParc. Beautiful chateau and chapel which is apparently the final resting place of Leonardo da Vinci. Just down the road, and reputedly linked to the main chateau by a tunnel, is Leonardo's home, Clos Luce, and well worth a visit.
The gite is located just south of the Vouvray wine area. Nearby is Chateauvieux with numerous vineyards, and also the location of the artisan who made the staircase. Delicious wine tastings available throughout the village.
Coarse fishing, walking, lake swimming and a delicious restaurant are just 10 minutes drive away.
Very good stables are located at Favourelles and it is possible to go on half hour hacks in the countryside, or longer.
