About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Christopher Ayton

I decided to move to France 9 years ago with my wife, a retired school teacher. I am a former Sales & Marketing Manager. Both my wife and I speak French and have very good French neighbours at both of our properties. We decided to make an investment in 2013 in the Loire area which we have visited many times in the past. We are extremely well placed to offer a large family home to people who appreciate the Loire area as we do.

Year property purchased 2013
Why this location? The Loire valley is one of the most beautiful areas of France, with its many châteaux, wine growing areas and places of historica linterest. The area offers many opportunities to walk, cycle, horse riding and other activities such as golf, fishing and hunting. In the nearest large town, Bourgueil, there is also an ice rink, sports facilities and shops, bars and restaurants. There is also a weekly market, along with many vineyards where local wines can be sampled and purchased. On the outskirts of the town there is also a Hypermarket. The cities of Tours, Saumur and Angers are all within an hours drive away.
Unique benefits of property The main benefits of our gîte are the number of bedrooms (seven) to comfortably accomodate adults and children. Animals are also welcome. Our property is ideal for large families to enjoy. A spacious lounge and separate dining room and separate breakfast room provide plenty of space for all the family to enjoy. A heated swimming pool with gated access and a security cover offer safety for children. A large gated and fenced garden of around an acre offer security for children. There is a table tennis table in the basement along with 6 adult bikes for guests to use. Ample on-site parking for up to 6 cars is available (Vehicles are parked at their owners risk). Our property is located in the heart of the French countryside, however close at hand in the village of Gizeux, 1 mile distant, there is a bakery, general store, chemists and hairdressers. There is also a château in the village open for visitors during the season. A warm welcome awaits you.

La Varenne is a super house and was absolutely ideal for our party of 5 adults (aged 40 to 70+) and 6 children (aged 2 to 11). The property is fully gated which meant that with small children everyone was relaxed. The pool is heated and gated and again this made for a very relaxing time. The grounds are extensive and so large that we had cricket and football happening in different areas while the very young played on the swings. The facilities in the house itself were excellent. We were met by the owners who gave us a full tour and explanation of the property. The supermarket in Bourgueil is excellent. For a family such as ours with parents, grandparents and grandchildren, it was an ideal position for our holiday. In fact it was so good that we have already booked it again for next year with 7 adults and 7 children. Thanks to the owners who were very helpful and responded immediately to any email or telephone requests. Already looking forward to our next visit.

Owner response

Thank you very much for your kind remarks which are much appreciated. We have strived over the last six years to provide a safe and comfortable environment for familes to enjoy. We look forward to your next visit. Very best wishes, Christopher & Linda.

La Varenne is a fairly remote, quiet gite with local village facilities but no supermarket or restaurants close by. The kitchen is far too small for catering for the large family the house can accommodate and the decor everywhere is shabby. It could do with some toys or games for indoor and outdoor play.
Having said all that it was very good for a family which included quite young children and made us feel comfortable.
We had a fair amount of very hot weather and the house stayed quite cool and the family sized pool was very welcome. The owner showed is round and explained all the necessary details. He left us a contact number.
I would recommend the property to friends who want peace and quiet and have a number of young grandchildren. It's quite a long drive for children if you want a day out to the Chateaux of the Loire.

The bath rooms are rather dated but functional and the cooker/sink area. in the kitchen is rather cramped. Some modernization would enhance the property. Our party of 7 enjoyed the spaciousness of the gite and its garden, and consider it's location great for exploring the Loire area. I would recommend it.

Owner response

Thank you for your visit to our gîte. Some modernisation of the kitchen area is planned, however most guests enjoy cooking and eating outside during the summer months where we have a concrete barbeque (charcoal) and three terraces with chairs (24) and tables (3) provided. Thank you for your comments and your recommendation.

If you head to La Varenne hoping to be able to post photos on Social Media of your ultra moderne/chic Gite in the Loire back to your audience then you will miss out. Twice. The main reason is that this area is about sitting back and soaking up the lack of pollution; noise (first thing I noticed when I got home), light (the stars envelope you here) and air.

I have written a few reviews on Trip Advisor and the common theme throughout all is that it is people that make a holiday or location. Mr and Mrs Ayton who own La Varenne are simply lovely, proud people that allow others to use a home that they themselves also use from time to time.

The house is enormous and located in a lovely spot with views of wheat, sunflower fields, trees and blue skies (10 out of 13 days) as far as the eye can see.

This is not a criticism but the decor is dated. It reminded me of my grandparents house in the 1970's hence my comment about La Varenne not being about image. It would benefit from an overhaul soon but it will in no way diminish your stay and in my case it made me feel somewhat nostalgic and at home.It is clean, fully functional, well equipped and comfortable. We were a family of 5 an that afforded lots of space and privacy when needed and things to do when not. The pool is lovely, always the right temperature. We took 2 dogs who now hate me for bringing them home as the garden is a) immense and b) secure so they could run around all day without any worries.

I love La Varenne.

Owner response

Thank you very much for your comments. We accept that our project is still ongoing, but we have already come a long way! It was a pleasure for us to have such a lovely family staying in our home, and we were grateful that our property was respected and left clean and tidy. We also love La Varenne and the delightful people round about.
