|Le Grenier, Le Moulin Volarie||Self Catering||1||4||1||Sofabed|
This idyllic retreat is absolutely perfectly placed for any Loire Valley holiday. From chateaux visits, car boots, wine tours, classic car lovers, cyclists, walkers, beach lovers and even “stay by the pool”ers, there really is something to suit all tastes.
With chateaux everywhere, the beautiful cities of Tours, Saumur and Le Mans are all within a 25-45 minute drive. Steeped in history and a unique wine area, there is loads to see and do.
Set within a valley, where we have a microclimate that raises temperatures well beyond those forecast, making it also the perfect setting for any that prefer to chill and relax.
Le Grenier itself is one of 2 new gites for 2016. An open plan loft conversion, 1 bedroomed, romantic hideaway, full of character and with exposed beams everywhere, a roll top bath, a private balcony and its own garden. There is the option of a double sofa bed should extra sleeping be required (but the bath is set in the bedroom, so although a screen is supplied for modesty, you had best know each other well). As all our gites, Le Grenier benefits from a completely fitted kitchen (with dishwasher), full UK free view, an English double socket with USB charge points, wi-fi, dvd a wood burner, bbq and use of our 50sqm pool (solar heated). We also have games in the garden including badminton, Jenga and boule. Please check our website for a full check list of what is provided & our other properties.
Please note that alternative check-in/out days may be offered, this site does not allow for variable dates, so please contact us for queries.
Fully fitted and equipped incl dishwasher, fridge-freezer, oven and induction hob. Everything you could need for doing a full roast to heating a pizza. Cutlery and crockery sufficient for 6.
There is dining for 4 in comfort.
Luxuriously finished with a huge 3 seater sofa. The woodburner is unlikely needed except for winter, but adds to the ambiance. The tv has full UK freeview, french tv and a connected dvd player.
Beautifully fitted with a superking bed. Plenty of room for 2 starfish sleepers.
The rolltop bath is situated in the corner of the bedroom, but there is a separate toilet.
Electric heating adds to the facility of the woodburner, but again is very unlikely to be needed.
Full UK tv via freesat, French tv and a dvd player.
Private garden and balcony with the addition of full use of the remaining gardens incl 50sqm pool. We have plenty of games from badminton and table tennis, to boule and garden Jenga. More games will be added as time goes on.
May '17 Update:
We have also just taken on our own 1.75 acre lake! We believe it to have been stocked with some carp, tench and trout originally back in the 90's and several years trout stocking since. For this year we are going to see how it goes as a leisure fisherman's lake, but will probably add stock early in 2018.
The lake is situated just under 4 km from us along a quiet country road (easy cycling) and will benefit from a picnic area with possible, occasional, night time camping. We have a couple of tents and a bbq that can be used as well.
There is ample parking for plenty of cars although no garages.
Le Grenier is a loft apartment and therefore not highly suitable for disabled users, however, we do have another gite that may be. Please contact us to discuss.
Trevor (the boss or so he thinks) is ex Disney management and also was the chef /manager at his own successful restaurant. He speaks French (helpful for booking restaurants and any emergencies), Dutch & German.
Kay (the real boss) used to work in the Thames Valley Police and then in a legal practice in the UK.
We then have Senna (head of security), Reena (head of sports and entertainment) and Max (bouncer and cuddle monster), all three of whom have just been promoted to bloggers.
|Year property purchased||2015|
|Why this location?||"The garden of France" the Vallee de Loir is known as, home of Chateaux, within an hour there are no less than about 40 (some of the best known in the whole country).
Under 2.5 hrs from Caen, 35 mins from the cities of Le Mans (famed for its race track and 24 hour races throughout the year) and Tours with its own history and airport. Just 5 minutes off the motorway and on the main route from the north of France to the south and the Spanish borders. Rural, yet just 2 minutes drive from a town with all amenities, from restaurants and bars, supermarkets and shops and a history all of its own.
We are set in our own little valley far enough from the town for it to be incredibly tranquil, the morning chorus of birdsong is a must at least once in your visit. Cycling groups pass us by, especially on Sundays and the Tour de Sarthe whizzed by 7 times last year. We do have the odd car, but it tends to be a tractor, woodpecker or cuckoo that breaks the silence. An idyllic retreat to get away to
|Unique benefits of property||Recommended by the tourist office for a 5* rating. Luxuriously renovated original watermill (unfortunately decommissioned in 1952). Set in its own valley you arrive to an open courtyard, gites to the right and onsite owners to the left. The courtyard helps create a unique microclimate with temperatures frequently well above those forecast. filled with colour and flowers, it is immediately calming and then you see the pool, 50sqm and solar heated, hidden behind the old stables. Peaceful and tranquil, our bottle wall garden is the talk of many visitors, yet close enough to all facilities and a huge array of amazing days out. We have over an acre of land and are very dog friendly.
Cycling and walking are great pastimes here, the flat surface into town and to the villages the otherway, make it ideal for all the family, there's a rental shop in town that delivers, it is that perfect! Fishing too with multiple options from prize catch lakes to the trout, stocked creek bordering our grounds
One of a huge number of amazing chateaux around us.
My wife and I have returned from Le Moulin Volarie16-23 September 2017 where we spent a wonderful week in one of the most beautiful gites that we have ever stayed in.
The advert described the property accurately although it did miss out some unexpected extras-in the kitchen there is USB charging point and there is a hot tub guests can use.
The property was immaculate and the owners Trevor and Kay Thompson were excellent hosts -on hand to give advice on potential trips and useful hints about local markets.
I was so impressed by the place and the reception that we received that on returning to the UK I wrote to the Editor of Living France and recommended that they do an article on Trevor and Kay and "Le Moulin"-She has said that she will so hopefully they will be featured in a future article.
I could not finish up without mentioning their 3 lovely dogs who greeted us day one and became friends very quickly.
I would like to wish Kay and Trevor all the very best for the future and look forward to returning to this hidden jem of a property which is in easy reach of everything one could wish for.

Beautiful accommodation and gardens. Kay and Trevor are lovely people and brilliant hosts with nothing too much trouble for them. Their three dogs 🐶 are gorgeous and very friendly
. Semi rural area with lots to see if you want to discover the area and just as nice to chill out in the gardens if you want to. The fishing is pretty good too. We'll definitely return.
Many thanks for your lovely review. Happy to see both you and Mike again in the future.
Trevor & Kay.
We stayed almost a week at this quiet relaxing location. The property is newly converted and superbly presented. There is a big comfortable bed, a wonderful bath tub, a great kitchen-diner and a spacious relaxing area. We frequently sat on the little balcony - reading, drinking local wine and just watching the sun go down over the sheep and free range chickens on the opposite hills.
The owners live a stone throw away and are knowledgeable and helpful without being at all intrusive.
There is a lovely walk into town where there are several good restaurants, great bakeries and patisseries. There is also a supermarket a short drive away.
The town of Tours is approx half an hour away by car and has a plenty of interesting shops, a cathedral and a Musee des beaux-arts. From there it is easy to go on to the chateau at Amboise.
We will certainly be going back.
Thank you both so much for your lovely words, it is great to hear how much guests have enjoyed their stay with us.
Our latest guests in fact, enjoyed it so much that they have put an offer in on a local property!
Hoping that you are both well and we look forward to welcoming you back. Trevor & Kay.
