|Le Bourg||Self Catering||Flexible||2||6||3||Small 1 apartment adjacent to the main house.|
Le Bourg is a delightful riverside barn conversion that exudes character and with its double-height beamed lounge and open aspect to the front and rear you cannot help but appreciate its ambiance.
This Loire Valley house (gite) to rent, is in the village of Barrou, in the department of Indre et Loire, Loire Valley, France and as the name suggests 'Le Bourg' is located in the centre of the village. Its situation means you have the benefits of experiencing a small French village but you are also ideally placed to visit all the major attractions of the Loire Valley plus some of the highlights of the neighbouring department of 'Vienne'. The property offers accommodation for up to six people.
There is secure off-road parking for two cars in the courtyard to the front of the house.
In addition to the main house there is a independent 'little house' in the courtyard offering apartment style accommodation which is available to you when you rent the house for 6 people. When 4 or less people rent the property it can be used with either of the other two bedrooms or just the two mainhouse bedrooms - spoilt for choice. The 'Little House' is never rented out separately. You have a good sized lounge with small kitchen area with own basic facilities, plus good-sized double bedroom on the first floor. The settee in the lounge is in fact a sofa bed making the accommodation even more flexible. The lounge/kitchen/diner is set up to allow for some of your party to have their own 'space' with the ability to relax read, listen to music or watch a dvd. You can also pick up the wi-fi connection here. There is a good sized shower room/wc off the lounge.
The upstairs bedroom is bright and airy with two single beds plus an additional sleighbed.
Here is a comment from our guestbook regarding utilising the 'Little House'. :
"For anyone thinking of coming with friends or grandparents, family etc. the 'little house' works really well as a 'refuge' *In-laws stayed there and had their own space- worked a treat "

Well our stay here has sadly come to an end. Thank you to Pauline & Jim for your wonderful hosting,we were treated like family as nothing was to much trouble for them. The house is beautiful, spacious and comfortable with everything we could possibly need. We tried most of the restaurants Pauline and Jim
recommended and enjoyed every one. Willy and Sandra at the local hostelry were hilarious and made us all very welcome as did the locals. We really hope to return and hope the weather is kinder to us, never the less it did not detract from a lovely holiday. Thank you once again Pauline and Jim you have been invaluable.
Very kind regards from all of us xxx

A big thank you to Jim & Pauline for a wonderfully warm welcome and good sense of fun. Special mention needed to Pauline for helping us so much in getting our car fixed at the local garage - I highly recommend 'Garage Bastard' who showed great care & friendliness which we now realise is typical of the area/town. Lovely time spent at Barrou - far too short! The set menu lunch at Marie is a 'belt-buster we'll have to repeat!!

Our third year visiting the Loire Valley. First time at 'Le Bourg' and the house and annexe are beautiful. Lovely nights spent outside BBQs and sampling the many wines of the region. The girls spent lovely days swimming in the river at Lesigny. Days out spent at Angles-sur-l'Anglin, La Roche Posay and the stunning Chateau de Chenonceau. Barrou is a friendly village with most amenities you require as well as Landlord Willy at the local bar!!
Finally to Jim & Pauline - thank you! As usual everything was perfect and you are wonderful hosts.
Until next time...

Jim & Pauline are amazing hosts in all ways...meeting us like family on arrival, orienting us to this wonderful house and answering all our questions. When Jim popped in for an after storm clean up he discovered us on the 12ft table with maps & brochures everywhere and quickly set us right with helpful tips an insider info. Our short week has been jammed with new adventures, unexpected discoveries all with the careful guidance of Jim & Pauline. Everything from grocery staples, veggies from their garden plus fresh flowers all made us feel welcomed and ready to experience this beautiful region'

Thank you so much Jim & Pauline for all your fantastic first-hand knowledge and advice - we've had a great week here in Barrou. 'Le Bourg' is a lovely place to stay and so well kitted out compared to the usual holiday accommodation and it makes the world of difference. It is almost impossible to pick out our favourites (visits) but Villandry and gardens was amazing and the International Garden Festival at Chaumont was something else - and endless, well worth the money. There are too many things to mention and too many things we didn't fit in. So hopefully we will be back soon to do the rest,
Sarah & Dom,
Clio & Will,

We are Jim and Pauline Craig a Scottish couple the wrong side of sixty who in 2005 decided to invest in a holiday home in France. We chose a house in the small village of Barrou in Southern Touraine ( how and why later ). We say invest as even then we had a desire to one day move here on a permanent basis. We had to look at something that might provide an income stream as we knew we couldn’t actually retire to France. After selling up in Scotland (May 2008) we bought a second house to renovate.

|Why this location?||This is a truly beautiful part of France. Experiencing villge life is a great way to appreciate all this region has to offer. The village's location is ideally positioned to visit the numerous chateaux and other places of interest.|
|Unique benefits of property||Le Bourg is a spacious barn conversion overlooking the River Creuse. The property consists of the main house which has 2 bedrooms. In addition there is a small apartment in the grounds which can sleep up to 4 people. This is ideal for larger parties. For example families travelling with grandparents have found the privacy afforded to be invaluable.|
While visiting the Loire Valley we suggest you should have the 'French restaurant' experience at least once --or more if your budget can stand it! Here in Southern Touraine you are spoilt for choice with many village restaurants offering lunches for under 15 euros.
Le Grand Pressigny boasts two good restaurants with lunchtime and evening menus to suit most pockets. Both offer opportunities for alfresco dinning on their respective terraces. '
La Savoie Villars went through a major refit in April 2013 and now offers good quality food in very pleasant surroundings.
If you are celebrating something special and want a dining experience then you can dine at the 'Mitchelin Star' “La Promenade” in the nearby village of Le Petit Pressigny.
An unforgettable experience
This resturnt has inside and outside eating areas and lunchtime and evening menus to suit most pockets. They are only a few minutes walk from the house.
Loches at only 30 minutes from our rental house here in the Loire Valley, is very popular with our guests and is one of our favourite places here in the Southern Touraine area of Centre Val de Loire. It has much to offer as it is steeped in history due its royal patronage over the centuries.
This is the 'must see' chateau of the Loire Valley - the iconic Chenonceau is the one, most, if not all, our guests want to see.
If the Loire Valley is known as the garden of France then at Chateau Villandry we must have the garden of the Loire Valley.
Villandry and its gardens is probably one of the most family orientated chateau within the Loire Valley in that it has a children’s maze (not terribly difficult!) and play area as well as the chateau and gardens for the adults. If you only have time to view a couple of chateaux on your visit to the Loire Valley make sure this is one of them.
We had a most enjoyable stay at Le Bourg and much appreciated the welcome and attentive oversight of Jim and Pauline, who are excellent caretakers and guides to the locality. As seasoned travelers in France we tend to like to explore alone. It was a great boon to have such a wealth of tourist pamphlets in the house, and to be able to use the bicycles. The village of Barrou offered plenty of interest and amenities, particularly the restaurant and river swimming, there and at Lésigny. The walks (apart from horseflies) on the ridge above the village were lovely though the local maps not entirely clear to follow!
We enjoyed visits to La Roche-Posay, Le Grand Pressigny, Angles sur l'Anglade, and the little-visited and unspolit Chateau des Ormes, a meeting place for great philosophes from the Enlightenment.
Only downside of the house from our point of view was the complex television set-up, making it impossible (or at least too difficult for us) to watch local French news or French television, which is part of the foreign experience for me. Doubtless if we'd got around to watching films we'd have appreciated the wide screen.
We hope to come to the region again and would be happy to revisit the house with a larger party and children.
Hi Belinda, many thanks for you kind review, it was lovely to meet you and Richard, It would be good to catch up with you in the future.
