La Belle Lochoise is a family home set deep in the countryside 18km from the beautiful medieval town of Loches in the Loire Valley. It is more than 200 years old and is the oldest house in the village of La Bauchetiere.
We bought the house in a sad state in 2001 and have been lovingly and sympathetically renovating it ever since. It is now a comfortable home that sleeps 7 people in 3 double rooms, 2 with double beds and one with the choice of 2 singles or one large double and one downstairs single room. All rooms have exposed oak beams. The ground floor is tiled throughout, with 2 rooms retaining their original terracotta ones. The upstairs has a solid wood oak floor apart from the bathrooms which are both tiled. We have tried to keep as many original features as possible including stable doors in the dining and sitting rooms as well as the original old windows in both those rooms.
We accept well behaved dogs although we would ask that they stay downstairs and are not allowed in the bedrooms or on the furniture. The garden is secure and is fenced. We regularly take our dog backwards and forwards to France from the UK so we can help you with any questions you may have concerning the pet passport system. We can also recommend a local vet and even help you make the appointment if you need us to.
We don’t have any provision for small children in the house. The floors are all hard so it might not be suitable for little people. Of course, all children are welcome and our kids grew up with all the freedom being in the country brings. There is plenty of space to run around and play ball games.
The area is famous for its wine, with many excellent red, white and rosé wines to sample. We are happy to help with information regarding wine tastings.
St Flovier is our nearest village. There is a bar which serves a set menu at lunch time and offers take away pizza on Friday and Saturday nights. There is a doctor, chemist, tabac and boulangerie. There is also a fishing lake.
We live just around the corner and will usually be on hand to answer any questions that you may have. There is an information folder in the house with brochures about the many attractions.
We hope that our guests have a great experience at La Belle Lochoise which is why we provide Egyptian cotton bedding and good quality towels. There are many antiques and finishing touches in the house which we hope makes it stand out from the average rental property. All the upstairs mattresses have been replaced recently.
Throughout the summer we can usually provide fresh vegetables grown at our other house, Maison Alice.
The kitchen is well equipped with a cooker with a single oven and 4 burners, 3 gas and one electric. There is a dishwasher, washing machine, coffee-machine, kettle, toaster and microwave. The fridge-freezer was new in 2018 as was the washing machine. There is a good range of crockery and cutlery provided. Dishwasher and washing machine tablets are supplied, as are washing-up liquid, tea towels and a range of cleaning products. A welcome pack of essentials, and a few treats, will be waiting for you when you arrive.
There is a shower room off the kitchen.
The dining room, conveniently just off the kitchen, has a table with seating for 8 people. The fireplace features a wood burning stove. There is an old stone sink in one corner and a potager hewn out of the wall under the tiled windowsill. The original stable door leads onto the patio. There are blue tooth speakers provided that can be linked to your phone or iPod.
The sitting room has 2 comfortable Chesterfield sofas. There is another wood burner in an exposed stone fireplace with a plentiful supply of logs for the occasional chilly evenings at the start or end of the season. Another stable door leads to the front of the house.
The tv room is off the dining room and has a smart tv with Netflix and comfy seating. There is a dvd player and a selection of dvd's.
The inner hallway has doors to the downstairs bedroom and the cloakroom and an oak staircase leading to the first floor. There is a large wardrobe which has hanging space and shelves. There is a selection of jigsaw puzzles.
Behind the staircase is a cosy corner with seating which is perfect for some peace and quiet. There is a book case with plenty of books, including some books aimed at children.
The downstairs bedroom has a single bed and a chest of drawers. There are glazed double doors leading out onto a small terrace.
There is a luxurious master bedroom with a king sized oak 4 poster bed. There are beautiful views across open countryside. There is a double wardrobe and a chest of drawers. The en suite bathroom is fully tiled and has a corner bath and spacious separate shower.
Bedroom 2 has the chimney running through it which has all exposed brickwork and is a stunning feature. There is a large double bed and a chest of drawers. The glazed double doors, with a juliet balcony, looking towards the front of the house.
Bedroom 3 has the back of the chimney exposed in the wall. There are two 3 foot single beds which can be linked together to form an extra large double bed if required. There is a chest of drawers. Glazed double doors look over the front and have a juliet balcony.
All the upstairs bedrooms have insect screens fitted to the windows.
The main bathroom has a corner bath, a separate shower, a glass basin and a wc. There is an electric heated towel rail and a velux window in the sloping ceiling. It is fully tiled.
The en suite bathroom has a corner bath, a separate shower, a glass basin and a wc. There is an electric heated towel rail and is fully tiled. There is a velux window in the sloping ceiling.
Downstairs, off the kitchen, is a shower room. There is a walk-in shower and a basin. There is a small electric radiator.
The cloakroom has a wc and basin. It is partly tiled and has a small window. There is a small electric radiator.
All towels are provided.
There are wood burning stoves in the sitting room and the dining room and logs will be supplied.
Nearly all the rooms have electric radiators.
Even in the depths of the winter the house stays very warm just using the woodburners, the chimney running through bedrooms 2 and 3 keep all of the upstairs very comfortable.
There is a tv room with Netflix available. There is also a dvd player and a selection of dvds.
There is wi-fi available but because of the thickness of the walls only works well in the kitchen and dining room. Plug in ethernet cables can be supplied if required. There is generally good mobile phone reception at the house.
There is a large selection of books, boardgames and puzzles.
The front of the house is gravelled with a large patio area. There is a table and chairs for 8 people and a parasol. There are flower beds at the front and there is often a selection of herbs growing for your use.
A charcoal bbq is provided and there will be a bag of charcoal and firelighters ready for your arrival.
There is a table tennis table. Boules and footballs are also available.
There is a large grassed area which is ideal for ball games and for children to run around. There are plum, apple, pear and cherry trees. Guests are free to help themselves to any fruit that is ripe.
There is a large garage which can accommodate 2 cars depending on their size. As it often gets very hot in the summer keeping the car cool is a real benefit.
There is plenty of parking at the front of the house.
Additional undercover parking can be organised if required - at a small extra charge.
La Belle Lochoise has a downstairs bedroom and shower room which makes it ideal if there is someone in your party who is less able or elderly. There is one small step between the dining room and sitting room but apart from that the floors are all flat.
Although we have no provision for small children there is plenty for children to do both at the house and in the local area.
The area is ideal for walkers and a trail runs through the village. The roads are all fairly flat and you can walk or cycle for miles without seeing any traffic.
At the moment La Belle Lochoise has no swimming pool although it is on our "to do" list. If the summer looks like it is going to be very hot we will provide a large quick up pool which is about 3 feet deep and suitable for all the family to cool off. One always kept our kids happy for hours when they were younger.
There are 2 very good swimming lakes a short drive away and a public pool in Loches.
We are a family with 2 grown up children. We have been holidaying in France since the kids were small and love spending time there. We now split our time between England and France.
|Year property purchased||2001|
|Why this location?||We chose this area because it is quiet and peaceful in the summer when the coastal areas of France can be very busy. Loches is off the main tourist trail but still has plenty to keep us occupied. There is so much in the area to do.|
|Unique benefits of property||This character property has a large enclosed garden with bbq and table tennis. The house is spacious and provides plenty of room in which to relax. The master bedroom has a four poster bed, a luxury en suite bathroom and beautiful countryside views. There are 3 bathrooms (one a shower room downstairs). There is a downstairs single bedroom, ideal for someone elderly or less able. We accept well behaved dogs.

Chemille sur Indres is about a 20 minute drive away.
Bellebouche is about a 30 minute drive away.
Both are lovely lakes with beaches, restaurants/bars and watersports in the summer.
Chemille has a life guard during high season.
Zooparc de Bauval is a brilliant day out. It is classed as the number one zoo in France and as one of the most beautiful zoological parks in the world.
They are one of the few zoos to have Giant Pandas and Manatees.
Loches has a large, busy market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings as well as a few night markets during the summer months.
Most weekends during the summer you can find a brocante in a local village.
There are many chateaux within a short drive. Some large and spectacular and some smaller intimate ones. There are more than 100 chateaux open to the public in the Loire.
Our favourites are Chenonceau which has fabulous flower displays in every room and Montresor which is much quieter and feels like a home.
Loches is a beautiful town. The main town has small pedestrianised streets to explore with many shops, bars and restaurants. Above the main town is the walled medieval town which contains the Chateau and Keep.
A vibrant city about 45 minutes away. It has squares and long boulevards to enjoy. If you want shopping there is a Gallerie Lafeyette and a Pintemps as well as many boutiques. The Cathedral is well worth a visit as are its Cloisters. Place Plumerau is a favourite of ours to sit and have a leisurely lunch and watch the world go by.
We stayed at La Belle Lochoise for a week in August. It is a spacious house which has been well restored and is full of lovely things, a real home from home. Everything was just as described, very comfortable with lots of thought given to what guests might need. There was plenty of room for five adults and a large garden with nice shady places to sit. It was very hot but inside the house stayed cool if you kept the blinds closed although the two fans provided were useful at night. The garage for the car was welcome in the hot weather.
The location is rural with a lovely view from the main bedroom, perfect to enjoy with an early morning cup of tea. We enjoyed croissants for breakfast from the bakery in Verneuil. Loches is a short drive away and worth visiting- it has a medieval fortress with great views, some nice shops and nice places to eat (we went to Gerbe D'Or on our last night which was really good). Tours is about an hour away and is also worth a visit for the cathedral and museums. There is plenty to see and do in the Loire Valley and this was a central location. One tip, we went to Chateau de Chenonceau which is beautiful but so crowded it was difficult to see anything so perhaps avoid in August.
Tim and Pauline were great hosts, letting us know about things happening locally and happy to help with any queries.
A week just wasn't long enough, we will just have to return!
Thank you for the review Teresa, it was a pleasure to meet you and your lovely family. We both hope you do return soon!
The accommodation was perfect for a pair of Grandparents with two parents and their two children. the house was kitted to provided a comfortable family retreat with a spacious and safe garden for two young children aged 6 and 2 to play football etc. the hosts provided plenty of play equipment to keep two active boys amused.
Car parking is great and with a large garage if required which we used as a shady area for the boys to play in.
We are from Australia and mostly used the BBQ for our evening meal. The kitchen has an electric oven with gas rings for cooking vegetables and pasta etc. Plenty of hot water for our needs. Dish washer and and clothes washing machine was used every day! The house has a TV room where the kids watched their programs away from a very comfortable lounge area.
The house has real character and has been superbly renovated by the gracious hosts Pauline and Tim. We had a marvellous time.
Thank you so much for your kind comments David. It was a pleasure to meet you and your family. Hope to see you again in the future. Pauline
Delighted to find the perfect place to escape to be with friends in quiet rural setting. The accommodation is first class, clean and spacious. Could not wish for more and cannot wait to return.
Thank you for the wonderful review Paul! Really glad you enjoyed your stay at La Belle Lochoise.
We stayed at La Belle Lochoise for a week this July, set in the heart of the French countryside between the villages of Verneuil and St Flovier, and around 15 minutes from the beautiful town of Loches with its medieval city, twice weekly market and good selection of cafes/restaurants. The owners, Pauline and Tim, greeted us like old friends and made sure we had everything we needed for a lovely holiday including a very generous welcome pack that included beer and local wine. The kitchen has is large and well equipped and leads on to a generous dining room. There is a large selection of both books and dvds for guests to borrow along with access to Netflix on the tv. The bedrooms and bathrooms are well appointed with beautiful exposed timbers and brickwork. There is also a generous supply of excellent quality towels. The garden is extensive with a BBQ, table tennis table and plenty of room for children to play. There is a bakers in Verneuil (also calls in van several times week late morning) and in St Flovier (closer than Verneuil if, like us, you need bread for breakfast!). Loches is well served with supermarkets, Leclerc and Super U are both on the way into Loches from the house. There is a lovely bakers on the main road in Perrusson as you drive to Loches - our favourite bread although St Flo’s was good too. We travelled easily to several Loire chateau from La Belle Lochoise and there are also swimming/watersports lakes nearby for those really hot days. All in all a lovely
