This is our home in France out of peak season and therefore has all the facilities you would expect from a home rather than just a holiday let.
Surgères is a very well kept secret. A delightful town centred around a park and remparts, it has kept its French character, being neither overrun with tourists or British expats, the town is a really friendly place with lots of associations and activities.
We are situated one street back from the park, with an easy walk into the centre. Supermarket, restaurants, delicatessens and artisan boulangers are a simple stroll away.
Surgères is also fabulously well located for visiting places, with almost every visitor attraction being less than an hour away. Located as we are, mid-way between the traditional landmarks of the Charente Maritime islands and the less well known (but not to the French) canal trips on the Marais Poitevin, and close to gorgeous La Rochelle and Ile de Ré.
We are Carol and Graham and we welcome you to our holiday home. On retirement we explored the sunnier parts of France in our campervan looking for a semi-permanent base. We chose the Charente Maritime area because of its sunny climate, easy access and wonderful places to visit.

We picked Surgères because it is a delightful town and is large enough not to shut down in the winter, and has associations and activities we can join in.
|Year property purchased||2016|
|Why this location?||The Charente Maritime is the second sunniest region in France and we are centrally located in it and easy to get to. There are so many places to visit you will not run out of things to do: Marais Poitevin, fabulous beaches, historic cities, stunning islands and gorgeous countryside are all within 30 mins to an hour.|
|Unique benefits of property||Surgeres itself is still very French, not overrun with mass tourism, and with enough going on outside high season to sustain a choice of restaurants, cafe-bars and delicatessens. The town has a nice central square, a lovely park and we can walk to all amenities.|
Saturday market in Surgeres is bustling, but just as good on other days is people watching at lunch time at the Grand Café for the plat de jour and le quotidien français.
If you're lucky to be in Surgères on the third Tuesday of each month a grand foire comes to town and the streets are alive with all manner of stalls; hardware, clothes, food, drink, live animals. This market takes over the whole town for the duration of the morning.
It's a bustling town which still retains its French character and has lots of activities planned throughout the summer. As well as the monthly foire you are likely to come across a classic car meet, music festival or some other community activity often centered around food.
We have a number of good restaurants we can fully recommend within easy walking distance, not counting the other cafes and bars where you can eat cheaply or get a takeaway.
A choice of patisseries/boulangeries within easy walking distance for your breakfast or lunch, and less than 10 minute walk through the park and remparts to the nearest Super-U supermarket, with larger Leclerc, Intermarche and Lidl supermarkets on the edge of the town accessible by car or by foot.
The park has walks around the old chateau, river walks and a childrens playground.
Fouras is a lovely seaside resort with a mix of wild watersports on one side and gentile beaches on the other, but the main attraction is a boat trip (all day) to Ile d'Aix. Take a picnic and walk around this peaceful island for a spectacular but relaxing day out. On the way back buy some super fresh seafood for supper.
Hire a bike on this magical island and explore the oyster beds, sheltered beaches and amazing wildlife. One of our favourite places!
Chic La Rochelle. History, shopping, sightseeing, its got it all. Avoid the hassle and take the regular train right into the centre from our local station. Take your wallet!
Less than 30 minutes to Coulon, the capital of the Marais Poitevin marshes. Hire a boat with, or without a guide for a relaxing trip round the canals - take the house binoculars to spot the lovely martin-pecheurs (kingfishers) on the banks. Picnic advised.
Visit La Corderie (Napoleons royal rope factory) and l'Hermione (replica tall ship) in historic Rochefort. Walk amongst the ancient shipbuilding locks and imagine the bustle of ship repairs in Napoleonic times. Relaxing riverside walks and a great lunch in Place Colbert.
Park the car and hire bikes or walk to see this wonderful island. Windswept beaches to the South East but our preference is the picturesque harbours of La Flotte and St Martin with coastal walks between on the North West coast. Nature trails can also be found in the centre of the island.
Go by car. The ampitheatre is a long walk from the centre so best to drive. Great commentary and very atmospheric. Allow a couple of hours just for this before visiting the other Roman ruins.
Interesting chateau in which to escape the sun in very picturesque surroundings. 20mins away
Our favourite restaurant and our nearest. La Table d'As is top end French cooking, not expensive and only a 5 minute walk away. Do not leave without visiting! Husband and wife team Alexandre and Sabine serve up fantastic local food cooked to perfection.
If you have young children they can skipper their own boat on a shallow boating lake at St Savinien. Another picnic opportunity either at the lake or beside the banks of the Charente. Scenic unrushed 30 min drive south cross country towards Saintes.
From the moment we arrived, we felt at home.
It is a comfortable property with character, yet has modern facilities.Every appliance felt new and in excellent condition.
The house is in a very quiet area and yet it is so convenient to walk for the croissants in the morning. The town with shops, cafes and restaurants is close at hand and the walk there can be through a park by the castle.
Any questions we had during our stay were answered immediately by email and the owners gave us extra information which was friendly and reassuring.
There are so many day trips which can be made from this house to the coast, chateaux and Marais Poitevin. Some of our favourite days were when we hired bicycles and tootled round villages on bike-friendly tracks.
There was plenty of space for six adults and two toddlers and the owners had gone out of their way to provide a cot, highchair and stair gate for us.
We can highly recommend this property and would love to stay again some day.
Thanks Jan for the lovely review - much appreciated. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay at La Maison Pierre. As you know it's our first full season and it's good to know we are getting it right.
We look forward to welcoming you again in the future.
