Information about any additional facilities

Surgères is a very well kept secret. A delightful town centred around a park and remparts, it has kept its French character, being neither overrun with tourists or British expats, the town is a really friendly place with lots of associations and activities.

We are situated one street back from the park, with an easy walk into the centre. Supermarket, restaurants, delicatessens and artisan boulangers are a simple stroll away.

We are fabulously well located for visiting places, with almost every visitor attraction being less than an hour away. Located as we are, mid-way between the traditional landmarks of the Charente Maritime islands and the less well known (but not to the French) canal trips on the Marais Poitevin, and close to gorgeous La Rochelle and Ile de Ré.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Graham Tree

We are Carol and Graham and we welcome you to our holiday home. On retirement we explored the sunnier parts of France in our campervan looking for a semi-permanent base. We chose the Charente Maritime area because of its sunny climate, easy access and wonderful places to visit.

We picked Surgères because it is a delightful town and is large enough not to shut down in the winter, and has associations and activities we can join in.

Year property purchased 2016
Why this location? The Charente Maritime is the second sunniest region in France and we are centrally located in it and easy to get to. There are so many places to visit you will not run out of things to do: Marais Poitevin, fabulous beaches, historic cities, stunning islands and gorgeous countryside are all within 30 mins to an hour.
Unique benefits of property Surgeres itself is still very French, not overrun with mass tourism, and with enough going on outside high season to sustain a choice of restaurants, cafe-bars and delicatessens. The town has a nice central square, a lovely park and we can walk to all amenities.

The Owner Recommends

Saturday market in Surgeres is bustling, but just as good on other days is people watching at lunch time at the Grand Café for the plat de jour and le quotidien français.

If you're lucky to be in Surgères on the third Tuesday of each month a grand foire comes to town and the streets are alive with all manner of stalls; hardware, clothes, food, drink, live animals. This market takes over the whole town for the duration of the morning.

It's a bustling town which still retains its French character and has lots of activities planned throughout the summer. As well as the monthly foire you are likely to come across a classic car meet, music festival or some other community activity often centered around food.

We have a number of good restaurants we can fully recommend within easy walking distance, not counting the other cafes and bars where you can eat cheaply or get a takeaway.

A choice of patisseries/boulangeries within easy walking distance for your breakfast or lunch, and less than 10 minute walk through the park and remparts to the nearest Super-U supermarket, with larger Leclerc, Intermarche and Lidl supermarkets on the edge of the town accessible by car or by foot.

The park has walks around the old chateau, river walks and a childrens playground.

Fouras and ile d'Aix

Fouras is a lovely seaside resort with a mix of wild watersports on one side and gentile beaches on the other, but the main attraction is a boat trip (all day) to Ile d'Aix. Take a picnic and walk around this peaceful island for a spectacular but relaxing day out. On the way back buy some super fresh seafood for supper.

Ile d'Oléron

Hire a bike on this magical island and explore the oyster beds, sheltered beaches and amazing wildlife. One of our favourite places!

La Rochelle

Chic La Rochelle. History, shopping, sightseeing, its got it all. Avoid the hassle and take the regular train right into the centre from our local station. Take your wallet!

Marais Poitevin

Less than 30 minutes to Coulon, the capital of the Marais Poitevin marshes. Hire a boat with, or without a guide for a relaxing trip round the canals - take the house binoculars to spot the lovely martin-pecheurs (kingfishers) on the banks. Picnic advised.

Visit La Corderie (Napoleons royal rope factory) and l'Hermione (replica tall ship) in historic Rochefort. Walk amongst the ancient shipbuilding locks and imagine the bustle of ship repairs in Napoleonic times. Relaxing riverside walks and a great lunch in Place Colbert.

Ile de Ré

Park the car and hire bikes or walk to see this wonderful island. Windswept beaches to the South East but our preference is the picturesque harbours of La Flotte and St Martin with coastal walks between on the North West coast. Nature trails can also be found in the centre of the island.

Go by car. The ampitheatre is a long walk from the centre so best to drive. Great commentary and very atmospheric. Allow a couple of hours just for this before visiting the other Roman ruins.

Dompierre sur Boutonne

Interesting chateau in which to escape the sun in very picturesque surroundings. 20mins away

Favourite Restaurant

Our favourite restaurant and our nearest. La Table d'As is top end French cooking, not expensive and only a 5 minute walk away. Do not leave without visiting! Husband and wife team Alexandre and Sabine serve up fantastic local food cooked to perfection.

Saint Savinien

If you have young children they can skipper their own boat on a shallow boating lake at St Savinien. Another picnic opportunity either at the lake or beside the banks of the Charente. Scenic unrushed 30 min drive south cross country towards Saintes.

We stayed for 2 weeks at La Maison Pierre as a large family of Grandparents, Parents and children.
The property was really large and accommodated us easily. Even when friends joined us for the second week, the property was still large enough.
The property was extremely clean and well maintained.
The owners have thought of everything you could possibly need within the property. They kept us well informed throughout. They could not have been more helpful.
The pool was definelty a big hit with all.
The town of Surgeres is lovely. We would definelty recommend La Grand Café for food. Other restaurant weren't open every evening.
La Rochelle is worth a visit. Nice to walk around and some lovely restaurants too.

We would highly recommend La Maison Pierre and would love to return ourselves sometime.

Thank you Ann for your lovely review.
So glad you enjoyed your stay. Thanks also for the lovely message left on the blackboard in the kitchen at La Maison Pierre - it was great to see it when we returned to the property in September - much appreciated.

Our stay at La Maison Pierre far exceeded our expectations.
The website description does not do it justice. The property is more than a holiday rental, it is a home from home.
It is wonderfully furnished, very clean and equipped with everything required and more.
The pool was clean, very well maintained and offered much needed opportunities to cool down in the hot weather.
In terms of location, there are many shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. We found it easy to visit La Rochelle and the beautiful coastline, as well as the beautiful countryside surrounding Surgeres.

Have already recommmended the property to friends and family.

Owner response

So pleased you enjoyed your stay Anne.
Look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
Best wishes

We spent a week at La Maison Pierre in the first week of August, with our two sons (11 & 9). We all loved the property, the pool was small but perfect for our needs and the house is in easy walk of Surgeres which is a fantastic little town. The property has recently been redecorated, was clean and very well presented with everything you could need for your holiday. There was a lovely welcome basket on arrival with fresh bread, jam, butter, wine and beer in the fridge, so we were all happy!

The boys loved playing on 'Ursula' the (enormous) inflatable unicorn and in fact both mum & dad enjoyed it too! The local market is fantastic with an amazing selection of stalls including bakery, fishmonger, butcher and locally grown veg and cheese galore. The local Pizzeria was great.

There is plenty of room at the property for 2 families with children. The location was safe and quiet and within easy reach of la rochelle which is definitely worth a day trip (the Aquarium!). It was too hot to move much whilst we were there, so we didn't adventure far...just to the pool and back..

We loved it and would definitely like to visit again. Carol and Graham could not have been more helpful and we enjoyed our stay very much.

Owner response

Thanks Chris for the lovely review.
We are happy you enjoyed your stay and that “Ursula” proved to be a hit - new additional sitting tenant for this year! (We had fingers crossed she would last the season.)
Glad the weather was kind and you could enjoy the outside space to the full.
We chose the house because of the location as we much prefer walking to shops, restaurants etc and are pleased that guests appreciate it as much as we do.
We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
Kind regards,
Carol and Graham

Lovely cottage in pleasant surroundings Share the UK’s most popular dog breeds with friends and family thanks to Dogs Trust’s emoji keyboard and remember - A Dog is For Life, Not Just For Christmas. Good base for exploring area. Few issues we had quickly responded to by owners.

Owner response

Pleased you found the house lovely but disappointed in your score - were you missing the dogs?
Kind regards
Carol and Graham

Ps - we could have arranged for you to borrow Kracotte - our neighbours dog.
