In the north west of the Midi-Pyrenees region lies Tarn et Garonne just north of Toulouse. Three rivers wind their way through Tarn et Garonne, the Tarn, Aveyron and Garonne. A very rural department with many beautiful towns, hillside villlages and rolling hills dotted with vineyards. The small quaint villages of Bruniquel, Auvillar and Lauzerte are listed as some of the most beautiful in France (Les Plus Beaux Villages des France). Two larger towns in Tarn et Garonne are Moissac and Montauban (the capital), both full of history. The climate is a cross between Atlantic Maritime and Mediterranean, early springs, long hot summers and mild winters.
In Tarn et Garonne wine production is very important, with many vineyards scattered around. The warm and mild climate means its possible for events to be held all year with wine festivals, music and arts. The town also has a small industrial sector involved in producing textiles and manufacturing.
Moissac is a small and friendly town, where the main place of interest is the Abbaye de St-Pierre. A magnificent sculpture of Jesus Christ takes centre stage, where hes portrayed as having 3 arms and hands. This isn't unusual as it represents holding the book of life, issuing a blessing and his hand over his heart. The capital, Montauban is one of the oldest bastide towns in the South West, retaining most of its original town centre. Originally called Mont Alba (Mount Willow in Occitan) there are still a number of willow trees in the town. There are plenty of museums, monuments and historical buildings to explore. For a more active town, the water sports centre in St Nicholas de la Grave has a sailing school with a range of boats for hire.
There are lots of medieval hillside villages and beautiful Gorges of the Aveyron for tourists to explore. Also because of the given number of rivers also running through the area, Tarn et Garonne is ideal for canoeing, kayaking and white water rafting.
