500 years of Le Havre

27 May - 8 October 2017

2017 marks the 500th Anniversary of Le Havre, and with a timetable full of special events and celebrations, there couldn’t be a better time to visit this historical city.

The founding charters of the city were signed in 1517 by Francois I and its status quickly grew thanks to successful trade links and later, its popularity as a busy seaside resort and the transatlantic liners connecting Le Havre to New York in the early twentieth century.  All of this changed during World War II when Le Havre became one of Europe’s most devastated cities with over 20,000 homes destroyed and many thousands of lives lost.

Since then, Le Havre has rebuilt itself into the bustling multicultural city we know today and is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the vision of Auguste Perret, who was known as the concrete poet after his famous architectural works.

To celebrate its milestone year, Le Havre will be holding 5 months of celebrations including art installations, street parades, concerts and exhibitions. It all kicks off on 27th May with the opening ceremony organised by the team behind the famous N.A.M.E electronic music festival that takes place every year in Lille. Events will be taking place throughout the city and will celebrate the culture, history and people of Le Havre.

From 6-9th July the world famous Royal de Luxe Company will be bringing their amazing giant mechanical marionettes to Le Havre for a one of a kind show that will fill the streets of this maritime city. Be sure not to miss the return of Impression, Sunrise; the famous piece of impressionist art painted by Claude Monet in Le Havre in 1872 – it will be on display at the MuMa (Museum of Modern Art) between 9th September – 8th October 2017.

The closing ceremony will be held on 8th October and will aim to bring the whole of the city together to celebrate, starting with an unmissable firework display held at sunrise. A new permanent, interactive digital installation will also be revealed during the ceremony, which will be both an everlasting reminder of the last 500 years and a landmark of Le Havre for many generations to come.
