Berck-sur-Mer hosts Europe's biggest kite festival, bringing together kite-flyers from China, Australia, America and Europe. Visitors can admire the craziest kites, from flying fish to imaginary monsters, take kite-flying classes and try out the latest models. Free to watch.
One day in 1989, the inhabitants of Moringhem woke up to see the streets of their village invaded with scarecrows (known as épeutnaerts’ in the local dialect). Thanks to their mayor, this fearsome display has now become an annual event.

Organised by the city's National Orchestra, pianists perform breathtaking recitals at this annual festival. 14 July 2017
Arras’s giants Colas, Jacqueline and Dede are paraded through the streets and the event is rounded off with evening fireworks. The giants are brought out again in late August as part of the festivities celebrating the end of Spanish occupation in the seventeenth century. Between festivals, you can view the giants in the town hall.
Takes all day in Wimereux and is free of charge. In the summer Wimereux goes moules mad for a weekend with eateries all over the place from the square to the beach. Delicious mussels are offered everywhere and what better way to wash them down than with a beer and watching the folk dancing entertainment.

A classical music festival which takes place in the gardens of the Hotel du Parc, overlooking the sea. This festival has become one of the Nord Pas de Calais region's key summer events, where visitors from all over France attend.
2 - 3 September 2017
Lille in Nord holds an extremely popular 48hr Braderie the first weekend in September. It is said to be the biggest in Europe and dates from medieval times.

12 - 13 November 2017
Takes place in Etaples and is free for the public. Saturday 10am to 9pm and Sunday 10am to 6pm. Fish have been caught off the coast here since the 11th century and this festival celebrates the humble hareng. Fisherman dressed in local costume serve fish at stalls across town and French wines flow freely.
Arras, Bethune and Boulogne are some of the best with gifts, decorations, regional produce and gourmet food often with parades, music and fireworks.
